Clarity, warm tone and high output.

John Petrucci has had a lot of recent experience playing the D Sonic on his 6-string guitars, so when he wanted the same sound from his 7-string, DiMarzio couldn't say no. The D Sonic combination of clean and heavy that works so well with high-gain amps for both chords and soloing makes a great choice for a 7-string bridge pickup. The DP706 guitar pickup is recommended for bridge position. As with the 6-string D Sonic, the character of the sound can be altered by reversing the installation direction. This can be particularly important because of the effect it will have on the low B string. With the solid bar polepiece towards the neck, the low B will be fat and heavy. With the bar towards the bridge, the sound will be tighter with more attack. The solid bar coil is also warmer-sounding, so two different single-coil sounds are available with coil-splitting.

  • D-Sonic Pickup

As reviewed by Sean Hart on 6/15/2010

After installing this with the pole facing the bridge in my RG7620, I could immediately feel the difference in the tone of my guitar. I recorded an A/B test of the stock Dimarzio New 7 pickup vs. the new D-Sonic, and I noticed a more open high end, less mud in the 800hz region, and razor sharp attack. It is a bit weak for sweep picking due to it's tight and pulling response, but most players including myself use the neck pickup for leads. It's great for DJENT, progressive rock, death metal, and the coil split tone is hot for country picking and classic rock riffing. Through a Roland JC-120, the jazz tones are far from subtle, and you'll find yourself trying hard NOT to get Petrucci's clean tone off of the Awake album with that combination. Overall, I'm very happy with this pickup.

  • ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITY

As reviewed by WIKED1 on 2/22/2007

This one is the one you need to actually sound unique. The tone characteristics are undefineable. Just the fact that facing the solid bar towards the head or the bridge gives it different sounds is amazing. I use it as the neck pickup on my Ibanez 7 string with the solid bar facing the bridge for a tighter sound with more attack. Then, to get a little kinky with my axe, I have it tapped to a single coil.

  • Great Sound

As reviewed by robbo on 12/2/2008

I am very particular about the overall sound of my guitars. I purchased this pickup for an old 7 string Ibanez and it sounds fantastic. It sings on the upper end and sounds very deep with great tone on the low end. With most I have tried in the past I feel as though I am stuck....if I want good clarity I end up with a pickup that is way too hot and has little tone, or if I want great tone I end up with one that is way to muddy on the low end. This pickup captures that low thick sound I am looking for without sounding muddy or cluttered. 5 Stars from me.
