This mixer is a middle priced pro-mixer and thus you would expect better quality from such a well known manufacturer. The sound is very good, but the quality of the cue buttons and mics buttons is very poor, thus dropping this mixer's overall quality. Two channel cues are out and the other two cues are on their way out! Both mic buttons are sticky and giving me touble, so its just a matter of time. the design of the buttons is the same. A fellow dj has the 900 with similiar cue buttons and he is having the same problem. HEY DENNON! you got a production problem!

The Exhaustive Review of the DN-X500

By DJ Eddie

from Port Saint Lucie

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

I've been DJing on and off for over 17 years. I've used many brands of mixers and can hear things that other experienced and professional DJs can't hear. I'm also picky in my late career.

The DN-X500 is for a DJ with little money who wants good basic features, and not a slew of cheep confusing options.

Yes, sonically this mixer is distortion free and clear sounding. It definitely does not have the warmth in the midrange as my old 19 inch Pioneer DJM-3000. There's something about the midrange of this mixer that sounds lacking to me. It also does not have the punch of my Pioneer, either. The sound is a little flat to me, but yes it is clear.

With the Pioneer DJM-3000 it sounds better in the red, unless you take it to +14, and then it's sudden harsh clipping. With the Denon, it's starts to sound a little worse in the red, beginning at +8 db. For the best sound in this mixer you keep at 0 db.

The EQ can only be turned +1/3-turn before it sounds bad no matter who is spinning or what genre it is. The option to remove the bass in the EQ is very handy for me. The EQ On/Off switch was just a confusing extra that probably no one needs, anyway.

I felt that the channel faders on this mixer were a little long but the quality is there. I didn't notice any fader cross-talk or music leaking from faders that were off. I liked that the main is a knob, which isn't as confusing as a 5th channel fader, like the DJM-3000. The crossfader contour knob is also a huge benefit that I didn't know I needed until it was there.

There is a XLR/TRS main mic and an additional TRS aux mic input. Both mic inputs include a midrange EQ knob with was a huge benefit for me. In order to hear any music behind the talk-over button you have to adjust the talk-over knob in the back of the mixer.

There are no effects on this mixer, which came as a relief to me. It's less confusing!! There is a TRS send and receive which comes in handy for mobile DJs, like me, who need a line-input to play along side of instrument performers, like sax or violinists.

The input assign and channel fader system allows you to change fader settings without the popping noise that came from the assign being a part of the fader, like on the Pioneer DJM-300. That's a plus!

I was happy with the booth output on this, however the headphone out is not extremely loud like a Pioneer. The problem would be if you DJed a festival or concert that was extremely loud and needed extremely loud headphone monitoring. This mixer's headphone out would probably be maxed-out for me at a concert. No, bueno.

The LED's are almost impossible to see outside. Even under shade I couldn't see my levels outside. The temperature is only slightly cooler than the hot Pioneers. The temperature of my equipment is a huge concern of mine as an outdoor mobile DJ in Florida. For some reason I can't understand, these mixers run hotter than my 1,000 watt QSC speakers. lol

The separate grounding posts were a huge relief over my old Pioneer. You can't use them unless the RCS's are unplugged because of where the posts are located, but no biggie. At least there's two!

In the following information I'm going to rate the mixer's parts in a range of money from the range of 0 - 1,000. 0 - 100 means it's so cheap that it would fall apart under careful use, 1,000 means durable under normal use, like a Pioneer. Please realize any mixer you buy would break if you abused it.

Apparent button durability = 550, button feel = 400, button performance = 550, apparent fader durability = 550, fader feel 550 - 600, fader performance = 650, apparent EQ durability, 550, EQ feel 550, EQ performance = 500.

I hope this review helped guide your purchase!

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

I bought this mixer right before I had a wedding to DJ and it worked out wonderfully. Enough inputs for everything I needed and I thought the sound from the mixer was excellent.

Best value for money, highly configurable!

    By Kevin Davis

    from Ann Arbor, MI

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

I might be slightly biased as my job required me to become intimately familiar with this mixer more than other models, but I've never worked with a more reliable, hard-working, extensible DJ mixer as the DN-X500. Everything you'd expect from a Pioneer, Urei, or A&H is built in to this unit, and it performs and holds up just as well if not better. I disagree with other reviewers, the buttons are fine, just not as stalwart and tolerant as some of the other components. Low-profile design makes for space-efficient rack mounting, connectors are built well (and there's a ton of 'em!). The rotary input selectors per fader are INDISPENSABLE for use by multiple DJs with CDs, vinyl, and all kinds of digital inputs to manage.

    Perfect fo a mobile dj!

    By Craig

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

This mixer is defiantly the best by for the money. I would actually pay more for it because it's so good. In some of these reviews, i hear negatives about the buttons, i wouldn't worry about them considering Ive had this mixer for months and they've stayed solid! However everything has a breaking point and if you abuse them they will break off no matter how good of a mixer you have. This mixer also has a very good cosmetic layout that is quite simple to follow. i got used to it in a few minutes. this mixer is also small in rack size which really helped me out because i have alot of equipment in my rack. But don't let its size fool you, THIS THING PACKS A HUGE PUNCH!!! In the past Ive dealed with mixers that were not powerful enough to handle my amps. pretty much the mixer would max out far before my amps when i needed the audio to be loud. This solves the problem 100%. in fact this thing is so powerful that it has a button to reduce the power. I Defiantly recommend this mixer for any DJ, Another great product Denon! keep up the good work!

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

This is a great mixer with really bad buttons that wear out quick and even break off. We actually have a light switch wired into our mixer for the microphone becasuse the buttons are all broke or very very difficult to actually turn on and off.

    Best mixer for the money!

    By DJ Blindsighted

    from Saint Louis

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

I have been a DJ for over 5 years and have gone through several mixers in my time, and the Denon 500 has been worth every penny! I have used this mixer for two years now and it has never failed me on the dance floor. The sound quality, durability, ease of use, size and most importantly the price it what sets this mixer apart from the rest. It does not have any fancy effects but you can hook up an effects processor directly into it which is 100 times better than the cheap effects other mixers give you. Denon is under pricing this mixer because looking back on it I would spend more for it.

    Solid in the 19' range

    By Otento-16KIA

    from pittsburgh

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

This is a great 19" mixer that I have been spinning on for close to two years now. I play psy trance and house music. Although it does not have the visual impact of a 12" mixer its functinality surpases most of them. Never thought I would find I liked a 19" mixer as a rave style DJ but its great because you can easily manipulate the chanel fader and EQ's with one hand. The main draw back of this board is its EQ. Although the full kills are perfect I find that the roll off on the mid and high are a bit to "literal" or "harsh". A very small twist will send your highs into the harsh zone and the general sonic response just seems to not be particularly smooth. This is a double edge sword in that it works great as a sort of master EQ for the mobile DJ playing pop tunes but lacks the smooth and more subtle alterations needed by a rave style DJ. I find that only 1/3 of the travel beyond the middle position of the EQ knobs is usable before the signal becomes boosted far to much to sound natural. However it rarely if ever distorts so it is not a lack of quality, simply preference (and no its not a poor PA, I practice on studio monitors).Overall the matrix input routing is the best feature and should show up on every mixer in the future. Tons of creative possibilities because of this. The cross fader is very nice but obviously not going to please the tablist crowd. It has a very cool rotary knob to adjust the fader curve which can in and of itself be used to make very smooth rotary style fades if you use your head about it.Overall a great piece of gear but I think I have outgrown it and will likely upgrade to the Denon x1500s mixer in the next few years and keep this as a backup.

Comments about Denon DN-X500 Pro DJ Mixer:

this mixer is great for any mobile dj that needs something from a good company that works.Has plenty of inputs and outs. One thing is there is no light conexion and no mike conexion on the top of the mixer. Also this has no sound effects so if you use sound effects this is not for you, you might as well buy the 900 that comes with effects..gave it 4 stars theres always room for improvement.
