I bought the Dean Z-X about a month ago and man, this thing is amazing. I play it through a Line 6 Spider II 30w. I've played a couple of nice Dime Explorers and the V, and this guitar has just as much tone and sustain. The amp has a built-in model called "insane", and when teamed up with the Z-X 's dual single-coils, it makes for some screaming sweeping solos. On a clean channel this axe has deep, warm, bluesy kind of tone. The case is big and heavy so I would suggest a gig bag for day to day use. Other than that, this guitar has sweet looks, the tone and sustain rival some of the more high end models, it's light-weight, and easy on the wallet( I paid a little over $350 with the case). You cant go wrong with this one.

To start off, this guitar has served me well for over a year. However, the sheer weight of this thing is enough to crush a small child. Do not under any circumstance buy the hard case, you could kill a man with that alone. Instead I recommend one of the "gator" gig-bags for oddly shaped guitars. The weight was such a problem that the cloth strap I was using would often slip off and cause my guitar to crash down to the ground. Because of this problem there is now a crack where the neck attaches to the body. The pickups are standard, they don't make any sound and work well through my Vox AD30VT, which allows me to get a wide variety of tones. The tuners are Grover tuners, and before my neck crack they held a tune fantastically, I hope every guitar I own has them. Overall, It's a nice guitar, and I will only recommend it if you are extremely aware of it's shape and weight. I've turned my chair only to bang the very long body on my desk, and I often knock things over with the large headstock. But it is so beautiful that I grin and bear it through all of the flaws.

Great starter guitar/Practice Guitar

By Jacob Smith

from Phoenix, AZ

I'm very new to guitar so take my review for what it's worth. I don't have a lot of experience with other guitars so I don't have much to compare it to, however for the price, I feel the quality of the instrument, the feel, the look, weight, everything is fantastic. I've found it fun to play and good to learn on. The action is great and I feel for anyone looking for a good quality electric without wanting to spend more than $200, you won't find anything better than this. The grover tuners keep this thing in tune. The pickups seem decent enough. I've been practicing on this guitar for 1-2 hrs. everyday, sometimes more. Once the strings settle, the grover tuners keep this thing in tune nicely. No issues with the guitar yet and I'm really happy with the purchase. As a noob starting out (at 36 years young) The look and feel make me want to pick up and play whenever I get a chance. I highly recommend. A few things to look out for..the photo on this site for the Brazilia burst model (the one I ordered) is slightly different than what I got shipped to me. For instance, the tuner pegs, the posts, the bridge, the outer ring of the pickup selector switch, and the framing around the pickups are all black. I had two shipped to my house (the first had a chip in the wood on the headstock. Looked like a mfg defect vs. shipping damage). Both guitars had the exact same look and features. The photo on this site, however, shows all of these features as being chrome and the pickup framing is white in the photo. This isn't really a complaint, just more of an FYI if that matters to you. It didn't matter to me, and in fact, the black features all look great. Also another thing to note. Both Z-X models that I received had a much darker finish that is closer to a rich brown/burnt orange finish vs. a bright sunburst orange as demonstrated in the photo. I think GC has a previous model shown or Dean provided them with the wrong image. Either way, just be aware of this. No GCs in AZ had this model on the floor so I had to order it online. I am not bothered by the differences at all as the darker finish and black features on the guitar look just as good IMO. However if you like that more classic Sunburst look with the chrome finishes, you might be disappointed with the Brazilia Burst option shown in the photo because it doesn't look the same. Just something to be aware of. Again, affordable, great starter guitar and I don't regret my purchase one bit. Can't wait to get better at playing and will probably upgrade to a Mustaine Signature model in the future. Get your Wings! Go with a Dean!

what are you waiting for, just buy it!!!

By WAYNE WILCOX

from chattanooga,tn

I have been obsessed with this guitar design for several years now. I chose the Dean for several reasons. First was cost. Times are kinda tuff, so I had to be realistic. I don't play in a band or make a living through music, but I wanted the look, feel, sound and reliability on a budget. Enter the Dean ZX. The look of this guitar was purely stunning. Mine is actually a darker grain than the stock photos here. This guitar is solid as a rock, but is comfortable to play. The fixed bridge sits perfect for pick hand muting, and for faster, more precise playing. I have two other guitars with Floyds and I can never seem to rest my right hand in a good spot. Thought I might be disappointed with the stock p-ups, I was wrong!! This guitar has great tone right out of the box, and was set up well. Over-all I could not be happier with this guitar. Aggressive look, plays and sounds great at a price that won't break the bank. Highly recommend this to a new or intermediate player.

Great value

By Greg

from Kenosha, WI

It's a $200 guitar. It plays very well right out of the box and is well made. I made some really minor adjustments and changed out the pickups and now it is incredibly hot. The looks are incredible. I like Dean products because they are inexpensive and they are built like tanks. I don't care about the bolt on neck limiting access to the upper frets. I will not let a piece of wood stand in the way of "getting after it" and neither should you. If you want to grab those notes, then grab them. I have other Deans with neck through construction but they are much more expensive than this model. It's a great value.

Great Fiddle for the scrilla

By Cobra

from Spokane, Wa

I originally bought this guitar to mutilate it and turn it into a chaos pad guitar, but after I got both the chaos pad and this guitar I was too impressed with how cool the two were individually. This guitar is definitely worth the money. It felt a little cheap when I first played it but after I adjusted the action and the pickups and slapped some new strings on it, it feels great. It also sounds very nice it screams when I need it to scream with very good sustain and crunch, but also sounds great clean. Its good for the deal.

New Review: EVERYTHING YOU WANT/NEED.....AND MORE!!

By completely satisfied dean owner.

from Iowa

my dean turns a year old in a week.....and i still play it everyday, and on top of that i can't keep my eyes off of it! the finish is beautiful!. i also can't believe the sound it creates! There are alot of guitars out there that are far more expensive( gibsons!) that this is just as good, if not better than! if you got the money, and you have any brains at all, you should buy this ASAP! PS. Dont waste your time getting an explorer.....this is an explorer with a different name!
