I have purchased several "toy" guitars for my son. They have all been just that... "Toys." However, full-size guitars are just too big for an 8 year old. Hence, buying toys. I came across this Dean and it looked pretty solid. And of course, the Dean reputation didn't hurt. The guitar arrived in perfect condition! It sounds looks and sounds fantastic. It does need some minor intonation work, but truly that's a minor issue as all guitars need that out of the box. My son is stoked and this should last him unitl he can handle a full-size axe.... Is suspect it'll last long enough for him to pass it daon to his kids someday.

I got my child this guitar because I wanted her to have a "real" guitar in her size, not a "Toy" guitar in her size. The guitar is great, the pickups sound strong and the knobs and strap pegs feel sturdy. It's everything that I hoped it would be for her. The problem with this thing is that it WILL NOT STAY in tune. and I mean BAD. by the time I get all the strings tuned the thing is out of tune again before I can play one chord. The tuning pegs are literally just wobbly on there and they wont hold tension AT ALL. I couldn't be more disappointed with it. I realize that it is a cheepie guitar, but really? From Dean I would have at least expected that the thing would stay in tune for longer than 30 seconds. I am going to look into my options to see if they will repair it - it needs a new set of tuning pegs, but I want to examine all of my options before I buy a set to put on myself. Once again - the guitar is great, everything is wonderful and plays better than a $100 guitar, everything that is except the tuning pegs. Don't get your hopes up on those.........

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

I have been a pro rock/blues guitarist for 50 years. I'm age 66 now and my playing hand is mostly shot due to arthritis, bent pinky finger, etc. caused by the constant bending and soloing of playing electric blues guitar. I beats your finger joint all to heck. So, I figured out that I needed to start to play a serious 3/4 size guitar to take the stress off of my left hand with the shorter scale and thin neck profile. I bought my Dean Playmate Evo J because it was an inexpensive way to test my theory. Well, this little jewel is a seriously excellent guitar right out of the box. It plays and sounds really good and is built well. The fit and finish is excellent, playablity is awesome. The pickups are monsters! The only thing I found cheap are the (4) washers that are under the screws that attach the neck to the body. Those washers are trashy. It makes no difference to the guitar's performance, but they should use some good chromed washer instead of the one that the factory used. I highly recommend this guitar to pros as well as students. It's hard to believe how much fun this little devil is to play.

    Nice

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

I recommend this guitar. I think it's better than the other humbucker mini guitars on this site. The things I like are: It represents the sound well of the pickups I chose for it (Seymour Duncan phat cat in the neck and custom 5 in the bridge). The neck is shaped well. It's wide enough that you're not cramped and also it's curved nicely, has a good radius to it. The frets are level and don't buzz at all even after I lowered the action. (Yes that will vary from guitar to guitar but I was happy to get one with perfect frets.) And it has a good scale length of 22.7". It's short enough that it's easy to play and you can have 10s or 11s on there and still be able to bend them easily but still not too short where chords will sound out of tune. The pickups are spaced nicely which gives the middle position a good sound. Finally the last of the positives are it came with totally decent D'addario xl 10s.
There are a few things that are shiesty about it seeing as it is friggin cheap as hell like: The nut is kind of shiesty, the saddles on the bridge buzz some, I had to removed a screw that secured the bridge to the body so I could move the high e saddle forward enough to intonate it correctly, and there was some weird white dust in the control cavity. Hmm don't know what that was about. So despite the few shortcomings I was able to install my pickups and set it up and get it sounding exactly as I hoped. It sounds really good if you put some work into it. The most important things are all there.

The tuning issue could just be me. I been all about acoustic--so this was my first fully electric adventure. So far so good. Can see the likelihood of upgrading in the future, but a great place to start.

      Awesome!

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

I've playing guitar for quite a while (well since the 80's) when intonation problems with cheaper guitars were the norm. i have a memphis mini strat that i bought for the same price i got this one for that has a mini baseball bat for a neck and a single humbucker. the dean is just a better build and finish. i love kamikaze guitars where you bang em up and they keep going and going, i still have that strat back in hawaii but didn't want to send for it. and now have a new playmate to start adventures with. it plays great out of the box, and yes it might need a slight tweak but that's expected. i've tuned it like a guitalele (A,E,C . .etc) and plan on using it this way just because. it's a little heavy but i can't really tell unless i pick up the vandetta i got last month. which is why i started liking dean. (i remember when sammy used dean)

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a small travel guitar that would fit in airline overheads and wanted something other than the ubiquitous Squier Mini Strat. I had owned one of those in the past and they felt too small and never sounded that good.
I bought this Dean based on good reviews and could not be more pleased. I just spent two weeks on the road with it and actually forgot it was a 3/4 size (until I noticed some of the stretchier chords were easier to reach). I carry a little "cigarette box" amp and the combination was great for hotel rooms.
I own a Fender Strat, an Epiphone Les Paul Studio, an Ibanez AS73 and a couple of Martin acoustics. Generally you get what you pay for but this little Dean is an exception to the rule. It's getting a lot of my playing time.
Set up out of the box was decent but I put on new strings and personalized a few adjustments. The cord that came with it was too cheap and didn't actually work. I gave it five stars anyway because it is such a fun little guitar.

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

I have relatively small hands, and on top of that had a biking injury years ago that left me with much pain on the base of my thumbs which prohibited me from being able to play for more than a few minutes without cringing in agony. As a music lover, I found a solution, voila! Enter "The Ukulele". Fun, but not a guitar replacement. Thanks to instruments like this one (7/8 and 3/4 guitars) plus the use of light strings I am able to play again. As I said, this "Playboy" (as in guitar player) LOVES his Playmate (Evo 3/4 size ax).

      Great beginner electric...

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

My son split this 50/50 with me in December so he could learn. It has a very nice set up, easy to play for short fingers. I ran this thing thru my practice regimen and it stood up well to all of the bends and heavy strumming without losing tune. Out of the box, it was a great sounding guitar. My 9 year old absolutely loves it. For the money, it is the best guitar in this class...I checked out all of the others at GC first. I gave it 5 stars for its quality at $100.

      Very nice!

      By david adams

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

Picked this guitar mostly for two reasons: size and ratings. It had good ratings, many mini guitars don't (usually intonation and going out of tune issues). I needed a small guitar that I can take traveling with me in the army. The problem is that small guitars (in my experience) tend to have troubles with going out of tune, and being frustrating to play as a result. I haven't had that issue with this guitar so far. It keeps tune pretty well. Truthfully, it's not much of a "mini" guitar, it almost full sized, just a little bit shorter with a few less frets than I'm used to (I generally prefer 24 frets). Still, it's playing quite nicely, in fact it's a joy to play. Not sure what strings came on it, but they're decent. I'll switch to super slinkys later when these wear out a bit, but they're pretty good. I bought a used model, black, and it came in very good shape and set up nicely, I haven't needed to mess with it at all, it played fine right out of the box. The sound is nice and for the price it has pretty decent electronics. Overall I'm happy with this guitar. it's definitely not a toy, it's a real guitar in all respects, and plays as such. For the price I couldn't really ask for more. I'm not a great lead player but it has nice action, and for chords and power chords it's really nice. Blues jams seem to fit it quite nicely, it's got good action for smooth, bluesy jams.

      Little thought in built plan

      By Streamz

Comments about Dean Playmate Evo J 3/4 Size Electric Guitar:

      Stay Away
      None really
Poor quality throughout, tuners junk, intonation impossible, Bridge placement mounted with no thought to intonate. You can almost intonate this guitar but adjustment screws jam into the string. lower strings adjustment needs to be all the way back on bridge and then comes the string jamming with adjustment screw. Fretboard cheap and glued a little to one side. 3 way switch makes noise when used. This guitar could almost be playable with a little more thought from the Einstein's who designed it. Do not buy this guitar for your child's first guitar. Poor craftsmanship, Bad all over. Pass on this one.
