Pros: Awesome satin-finished neck with a familiar wide/shallow profile, good basic electronics and hardware, not too heavy, well built for a Korean-made instrument, easy to adapt to 8-strings. Cons: minor Korean-made cosmetic flaws, black only color option. After playing this bass for two weeks, I'm quite impressed with the Dean Edge 8. It has a great neck that is part P-bass, part J-bass. The active electronics worked fine. There is a fair amount of boost and cut in both treble and bass knobs. Center detents were solid. The tone was quite good and could be used with most styles of music. The distinctive chime of the root/octave was addictive. Overall construction was good, but there were some minor flaws (paint swirling) in one area of the paint near the strap button, and the brass nut was tarnished. The truss rod cover didn't fit properly and looked like an afterthought. These are minor complaints that do not affect the performance of this bass. It wasn't hard to play chords and arpeggios. I could reach all the notes up and down the fretboard. Speaking of notes, the strings stayed in tune even when played aggressively. There wasn't much of a learning curve. Once I learned to be deliberate with my pick attack (hitting both strings at once), I felt like I've been playing the 8 for years. It will eat through the picks. I'm more of a fingerstyle player, but it's best to use a pick on the 8. It's not impossible, though, to play fingerstyle. Just some minor hand adjustments are required. If you're looking to add a specialty bass that will help fill sonic space in your band, then this is the bass for you.

This is a useless piece of garbage. There is no excuse for such nonsense being made today.
Dean was once a respected name in the industry.
Dean should consider making guitars out of molded plastic.

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

The tone is great, but I don't like how the neck feels. This is personal preference mind you, and nothing wrong with the bass. I can't believe I haven't played an 8 string sooner.

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

I've had this bass for a few days now. Super cool sound, pretty easy to play. This is my first bass with more strings than 4. About 10 minutes of noodling got me acclimated to the setup. It arrived by mail from MF in tune (no kidding!) and ready to play. Four knobs: pickup pan control, volume, and separate treble / bass eq controls. Pickups are active and it comes with a battery installed (yay!).

The look is awesome, IMO. It doesn't scream "HEY I'M an 8 STRINGER!" It's subdued and sexy.

The bass came with no literature, so I was left to figure out what the knob functions and layout were on my own. I sent an e-mail to Dean about that and they replied within a few hours with all the technical info. Nice response, but this stuff should be in the box.

The neck seems right-sized for having 8 strings. The neck finish is natural satin, which is fine. My experience with satin finished necks is that the feel improves with time as you play, and I expect that to be the case with this guitar.

I really enjoy playing this bass. The body is shaped right, it fits well with my play style and sounds incredible. Fits into a standard sized bass case / gig bag. Highly recommended.

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

I was impressed with the big sound, loud pick-ups, low action, perfect set-up right out of the box, great tone of the roundwounds, comfortable weight balance of the neck, tight tuners, great value. I also purchased the formfit hardshell case which was a great value. This bass will fill the void in a three piece group. Just wait till you play it on Hendrix "Fire" or "Play That Funky Music" or "Funk 49"....

        OH MY GOSH!!!

        By Kyle Vandergriff

        from Denton, Texas

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

My only disconcern is that the bass has been discontinued from Dean and I can't get Dean to respond via phone/email and let me know the string sizes from factory so I'll know what to go with when the time comes.
WOW! I bought the Dean Edge 8 8 string bass with high expectations and it met AND exceeded all of them! It came in with no need for a set up or the neck needing any tweeking (I had it checked), which is surprising since it was sold on-line. The tone is absolutely amazing with super low end and great highs. It is the perfect addition to my collection and will probably be the main bass for playing live and for recording.
Excellent guitar! Amazing sound and completely ready to play live, right out of the box!
        Totally worth the money!

        Plays like a $1,200.00 Bass

        By Limitless

        from Las Vegas

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

Opened the box, pulled it out, liked the glossy black paint job, liked the feel, neck was pretty good for a Korean manufactured bass, fretboard ok, hardware nice. Tuned it up on my BOSS GT10B. I was surprised at how good the factory strings sounded. Most bass guitars I have bought needed a new string set right off. I will probably play this for awhile before I change out the strings. Once tuned I could not put her down. I play 4,5,and 6 string basses so this was no challenge to play. Love the solid feel of this bass! I would put this up against $1,000 to $1,500 8 string basses. It played and sounded alot better than the Schecter 8. Buy it now, you won't be sorry.

        Dud Pre-amp

        By grammaton

        from Albuquerque, NM

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

I am very happy with my Dean Edge 8, now that it's working. When I first got it, there were a couple loose wires, and so it would stop producing noise after a few minutes of playing. I got the pre-amp replaced (Dean was nice enough to send it for free), and now it plays like a dream. The pickups could be a bit more powerful but besides that it's a great instrument.

Excellent Bass for A Great Price

By All Those Who Wander Are Not Lost

        from Bowie, MD

Comments about Dean Edge 8 8-String Electric Bass:

I played this [wonderful] bass at my local GC and it had the best sound out of a $500 8 string bass. Typically, I've seen $2,000 and $7,000 8 string basses that play good, but not as good as the Dean Edge 8. If your looking for your first 8 string bass, get this one. It is well worth the money.

An 8 String bass has a sound that is truely unique. In the studio this Dean 8 string sounds great clean or dirty. If you want a big sound try this 8 string through an overdiven tube amp.Clean, it sounds like a piano. The brass nut is a big plus. The pickups are great!I'm very happy with the Edge 8 String!
