I already own a Dean Custom 350 Floyd and needed a non-Floyd guitar for different tunings when the time comes. I had purchased an Ibanez Artist 500 EMG, and it sounded great and was built great; but the neck was very thick and hard to play. So I got rid of the Ibanez and bought the Mustaine Zero AOD2 and WOW. First the neck is incredible. This is the first "D" shaped neck I have played and it is Mustaine speced and very thin and playable. The neck thru body design gives great access to the 23rd and 24th fret. Now where I was really surprised, the sound! First, the stock DMT pickups sound great, I thought I might have to replace them, no need. Unlike most "factory" passive pickups that don't have a large difference in tone from front pickup to back pickup, this one does. The front pickup can be very smooth and creamy and the back pickup can flat out roar. But the most impressive thing is that even though the guitar looks metal, it cleans up great!! I have played it thru my two amps (Marshall Valvestate 2000 12AX7 and an Acoustic Lead Series 20G), one a hybrid with tubes and one solid state. It sounds great without pedals on either amp and gets as much distortion and gain as you want without the need of pedals. The string thru body also brings in a ton of sustain. Lastly, the volume controls are backwards. The front control works the back pickup and the back control works the front pickup. This is not a flaw or a problem needing fixed, this is how Dave has his own volume controls on his own guitars. I had to call Dean to find out. They decided to keep that unique feature on the model to keep it as true as they could to Dave's axe. At this price point you will not find a better guitar for playing anything from metal, rock, blues and whatever you wish.
Let me preface this review by stating that I am disabled and get seizures and shakes a lot, making playing rather difficult. I had an Ibanez Artist 500 EMG that I loved the sound of, but the neck was way to thick for me to get up and down on easily. Chord changes were horrible. I did love the EMGs, especially the 60 in the bridge, it was smooth as melted butter. I purchased this guitar based on your reviews about this neck alone. Well when I plugged it and started to play three things stood out to me. First, the Mustaine spec "D" shape neck is very flat and playable for me with my limitations. Second was the tone!! Incredible tone. The DMT humbuckers (which are made in the USA) are awesome. I thought I would have to switch them out with some EMGs or Dimarzios; no way. The problem I have found with most passive pickups is that that there is not a "big" difference from the bridge to the neck pickup, there is on this Mustaine and the tone is unreal!! Lastly the action is low and superb. The only thing I would change on this magnificent beast would be to add a hard tail option and maybe some transparent options with a maple top; but those are very minor. This is one bad looking axe!! The artwork that Mustaine has commissioned is incredible and the chrome pickup covers just finish off the look perfectly. If you can still get this for $399, do it!! I paid a lot more for mine and it was well worth it.
This is a great guitar for the price, especially if you a big Dave Mustaine fan. I have one complaint though, it is probably only my guitar though, mine has extremely bad fret buzz all over the fret board in random places. Im going to have to try to fix that soon though. Other than that no complaints. Favorite thing about this guitar is the neck most have guitars with big fat necks, so this thin neck feels so great for me.
I was able to get this guitar at an excellent price, and it was well worth it! Out of the box the action is very nice and low, and it can go lower still. It's surprisingly light, yet very solid feeling, the sustain is amazing! The signature Mustaine neck is nice and thin, perfect for shredding, especially for those us with stumpy fingers. I bought the guitar with the idea of replacing the pick ups with Mustaine's signature Livewires, but after playing it I'm not sure I want to, the pick ups have great tone, and seem to have plenty of output on their own. It is one of 5 guitars I own(Fender strat, Epiphone SG, Jackson V, Ibanez Jem(knockoff), and it's quickly becoming my favorite player, just feels so natural moving up and down the neck.
I bought this guitar after a 5 year hiatus from playing. I had previously played guitar for about 15 years and had generally played Jackson and Epiphone Flying V & Explorer variations in the same price range as this guitar. The reason I gravitated toward the Mustaine model, besides being a huge Megadeth fan, is that Dave actually uses the Korean models which means they must be made well. After hitting the first power chord and botched scale run, I knew this guitar was the best sounding and feeling instrument I've ever owned.
I bought this guitar after Christmas and I was amazed. The graphic is freaking amazing and the sound is very good. I have 2 things I don't like. 1) It doesn't have the shark tooth inlays. 2) My amp doesn't have noise gate so this guitar is always making that blare noise and my parents get pretty upset at night when i try jamming with my brother. Otherwise this guitar is a bomb. One thing i like is that when its set to a clean tone its as beautiful as an angel but when its distorted its like listening to death.
I got this guitar for this past Christmas, and i completely love it. The set neck is amazing, I love the feel of it and the graphic speaks for itself. You can pretty much use it for anything, I'll use it when i have to play at church then I'll go home home and play Slayer, just an overall monster, I recommend this for anybody.
I've had this guitar since Christmas of 2011. I must say this guitar is great except for those minor details you find in all guitars (input jack problems, and strangely reversed volume knobs). I reccomend switching out the pickups, although they are MABs, I was able to get the exact same sound out of my Squier single coils. The guitar plays great, one thing I found strange was the action. Initially I thought it was off because it sounded terrible when it wasn't plugged in (said Squier sounded great without an amp), no matter how many action changes it made it still sounded twangy. But no matter, plugging it in it sounds great. The neck is absolutely wonderful and there's nothing wrong with it. Definitely worth it.
this thing is great. the set neck is amazing. ive always owned a bolt on so that was a cool feature for me. the pups are very high output and match dave's tone as long as your eq is set right. i had to turn the bass down by half for mine. its very lightweight id say nearly if not lighter then the vmnts. not being as heavy it sits a lil weird at first at a certain length depending on how low you play. true his is bigger then any explorer on the market but not by much. if you go to amazon or idk maybe gc has it, there is a coffin case for extreme body guitars that fits it perfectly. overall id say this thing competes with its older brother. a def must have for megadeth/metal/dean/explorer fans alike. my only problem with this guitar is its bridge. to adjust the height of it requires you to move a big gear like thing under the bridge where as most tune-o-matics will have a screw easy to get to. but that alone shouldnt be enough for you to not buy it, just a tip fyi
Great guitar for the money. Once I got the action just right the guitar sounds awesome. The pickups have a great heavy sound and the graphic of the picture is really cool. I recommend this guitar to anyone!
