This is the third Dean I've owned in my life, and like the two before, it plays really well, looks really nice, is very solidly built... and the pickup sucks! I don't know the ins and outs of Dean Guitar Company, but my assumption is that they cut corners on pickups, which is sad because everything else about this guitar is top shelf: ornate engraving, gold-plated tuners and cone cover, and clean working electronic components. And just like my other two Deans (Lefty Classical, Lefty Evo), I had to change the pickup to make it sound good. But once the pickup was changed from the cheap piezo it came with to a K&K Sound Resonator pickup, it suddenly sounded AMAZING. Unplugged, this guitar has that resonator growl that people pay the big bucks for in a National or Dobro, and it does it very admirably, but when amplified with the original piezo most of that sound is lost. The K&K pickup gets all those mids and trebles mixed with all that transient cone noise, and when blended with the stock lipstick pickup already present on the guitar, the whole frequency spectrum is covered and the sound of a metal-bodied resonator guitar is gloriously brought to the listener in an accurate rendering. I bought mine to use on stage, and I have yet to encounter an issue with it. People always make an audible reaction to when I lull it out due to it's gorgeous appearance, and they almost seemed surprised when the sound is equally gorgeous.
Finally received my chrome and gold Dean resonator!! Sounds AWESOME and looks.....WOW.... even better. What a work of art The engraving and mother o' pearl accents are soooo cool! Fun and easy to play! Even if I never played it, it would have been worth every penny just as a work of art! KILLER!
