dean ce resonator guitar

By Joe Sferlazza

Comments about Dean CE Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Resonator Guitar:

I am a professional musician with over 45 years of playing and gigging. In those years I have owned and played new, used, and vintage nationals, dobros, johnsons, regals, supros and so on. Most resonators have a great unpluged sound, but plugged in they are feedback monsters! Not so with this guitar. It sounds great, plays great, and plugged into a p.a., it amplifies well! I haven't played it at a gig yet, but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts it will be my #1 resonator to play out with.

Dean CE Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Resonator Guitar Natural

Comments about Dean CE Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Resonator Guitar:

Have always wanted to try a resonator guitar, but didn't want to spend top dollar on first time purchase in case it wasn't to my liking. It is a very good looking instrument and has been fun playing right out of the box. It has a real good tone and would tell anyone it is worth the money.

Surprisingly nice guitar for the price

Comments about Dean CE Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Resonator Guitar:

I'm a singer/songwriter that performs regularly at small pubs and wine bars. I've considered adding a resonator to my collection for quite a while. I wanted a cutaway and it had to have electronics so I could plug it into my PA system. I also needed it to be on the lower end pricewise because I didn't expect to play it that often and just wanted something fun to mess around with.

The Dean seemed to fit my criteria, but I'd played a lot of resonators at music stores or ones owned by friends that I didn't like. They were hard to play, sounded bad, or were too heavy, so I was reluctant to order one online and take my chances. Thankfully at Guitar Center you can order online and pick it up at a store so you can play it before you make the final decision.

I was surprised when I took the guitar out of the box at the store. The overall quality of the guitar was exceptionally good for this price range. It is very well made. It played "buzz" free all the way up the neck and intonation was also true all the way up the neck right out of the box. I found this guitar ready to take out on a gig without any additional set up. Another surprise was how light this guitar is for a resonator. It doesn't feel any heavier than my other acoustic guitars.

Without amplification it has a very banjo like tone. When amplified I was surprised at the warmth of the tone and the amount of bass it projects. There are only two things that I would consider even remotely negative. The action is a little high for my preference, but I suspect that may be a benefit as I experiment playing it with a slide. This is pretty minor, it still plays easily as is. The other thing is that the lipstick pickup is not very hot so you can't get much out of a low power amp or PA. Once I understood what I was working with I've been able to get a really nice full sound from my equipment and on house systems I've tried it on. What I thought would be just a toy has turned out to be a nice addition at my gigs.
