I purchased this guitar about 8 months ago, but it is not my primary instrument. I wanted a solid 12 string that had a good acoustical sound, but was easily amplified without the need for EQۡs, sound hole, or transducer type pickups and other issues related to a standard acoustic guitar. The guitar has a wide neck across the fret board, good fret spacing, and low action straight from the box. The intonation was good in both open chord and bar chord playing at the 12th fret. I have medium large hands so the wide neck did not pose a problem and it makes picking comfortable, but someone with small hands may find it a bit difficult. The guitar is not balanced well at all and is top heavy. This causes the head to naturally tip downward while playing if youۡre standing up. If 12 string is your main axe it could be a little strenuous playing the guitar for long periods. The guitar is fairly basic with a single volume, tone control, and 3-way pickup selector. The form, fit, and finish is very good and it has the same weight and feel as an ES style guitar with a smaller body. It easily produces a nice warm sound of an acoustic as well bright sustain and crunch. This makes it easy to get a both an acoustic and electric sound from the guitar. Iۡve given the guitar an overall rating of 4 out of 5 because of the balance issue and wide neck, but for the price this is an outstanding guitar for those times when you want the chorus sound only a 12 string can give you.

02/07/10 I ordered this guitar through Guitar Center in Tulsa,OK. back in November. I got the amber sunburst. The price had lowered so I went for it, looking to get an electric 12 string into my collection of guitars. Listen folks, I went through 2 of these trying to get a good one, and it just wasn't happening! The craftsmanship & workmanship on these guitars were both defective! The first one had a neck pickup that was crooked, the high E string saddle was off kelter, 4 piece body, wiring showing through the F hole because the tacky strip inside that's supposed to hold them back had come loose, the F hole binding was defective, the nut had defects in it, one tuner had a washer upside down, and the Dean EVO case I ordered for it had glue smears all over the seams, and the Dean logo was crooked! The second one had a nut way too high, headstock had a chip in the black finish, three of the washers on the tuners were upside down, sloppy paint around the headstock, position marker had a small chipped spot in the fretboard. The second case also had glue smears along the seams, & it wouldn't close evenly without aligning it by hand! The logo was crooked on this one also! The attention to detail was sadly lacking. The one good thing I really liked was the width of the neck. Felt good in my hands. Unfortunately I did not want to try for a third time. I sent them back and cancelled this order. Dean, your overseas employees have got to do better than this. Quality control was not doing there job on these two!

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Almost a great guitar out of the box, but wait, not so fast...With any 12-string you just need to accept in advance that this will be a more finicky instrument. There is just a lot more going on in terms of tuning, intonation, bridge height, etc... so while it was OK out of the box, I had a basic set-up done at GC with new strings and that took it from 3 stars...to 5 stars. Bake that $50 set-up into your purchase price and you won't be disappointed. Once done, however, incredible sounds and craftsmanship at this price point. In the 12-string market there's a lot of high-end guitars, and an lot of cheap guitars. Finding a reasonably-priced "in between" instrument that you'd be proud to play is a tough job but Dean absolutely nailed it with the Boca. It's fun, unique and adds a great sound to your set on those songs that call for some extra ring.

Important to say that I've heard of Dean for a while now (since back in the late '70s when they came out) but my first purchase was a Dean Backwoods banjo I bought earlier this year. I saw the pound-for-pound workmanship and features over the other higher-priced, name brand banjos and was so pleased with that purchase - that I decided to take a chance on a Dean 12-string electric. Very happy, similar positively-surprised experience at every turn. The more I play it the more I appreciate what went into it.

Final Note on color: I was concerned in advance that the GC photo looked awfully yellow with a bright red strip as an afterthought. That was NOT the case with my Boca-12 - it was a classic maple-to-red sunburst that showed some nice work in the paint shop.

Overall, if you are looking for a 12 that does the unique things that 12s are supposed to do, you need to consider this instrument. Dollar for dollar it's the best.

WOW…. I am thrilled with how nice my new Dean Boca 12 string looks and plays. It is as perfect as any guitar I've played. The finish is flawless. Tuners are tight and precise. The wider neck makes it very easy to play. The set-up was great right out of the box. Easy to tune for a 12 string. I own 16 electrics including four Fenders, four Gibson, three Rickenbacker (325 just like John's) but this Dean 12 string might become my favorite to play. It sounds great with a wide variety of tones. I can't wait to play some Beatles/Byrds/Tom Petty tunes. I would give it 10 Stars if I could.

I play in a 60's tribute band and many of the tunes require 12 string. The Dean Boca is an affordable, easy to play guitar that fits the bill nicely.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I was a little hesitant to order this guitar without having played one and I had read some negative reviews, but the positive reviews here and in other sites brought some hope. I nearly bought a Ric 12 but the narrow neck probably wouldn't work with my large hands. That said, I decided to take a chance. To my pleasant surprise the guitar exceeded my expectations. It was set up pretty well right out of the box. Low action, no fret buzzing any where on the neck. I wanted that 60s "jangle" and was not disappointed. I play it on the middle toggle position and run it through a compressor pedal. I have ordered a set of Ric flat wound strings (through another vendor as GC doesn't stock them). I ordered the Amber finish and it looks good and the finish is pretty much flawless. The neck is maple and is finished in a flat sheen which makes for easy movements up and down the neck. The frets are nicely dressed for a guitar of this price range, no sharp edges. The abalone dots are a nice touch. I tuned the guitar and played it for some time, retuning a couple times, then put it away over night and when I picked it up the next day it was still in tune.

            Couldn't agree more

            By Brian Surks

            from San Diego, CA

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I love 12-string guitars. I have let go of all of them because my hands just couldn't keep up with what I wanted to do on them. They were all acoustic and my fatigue always overcame my desire. Light strings helped with the fatigue but not completely and I also lost the sound I was looking for. When I let them go I always missed them. Recently I thought "Why not try an electric? The action would be much tighter.". I looked at inexpensive ones and didn't feel comfortable investing the money even though the price was low. I read the reviews on this one and kept coming back to it. I couldn't find one to play first so, because of Guitar Center's generous return policy, I decided to order one of these and try it out. It is less expensive than the rest but, trust me, it is not cheap. I fell in love with it as soon as I brought it up to pitch. It is light enough and very well balanced. The action on it is a dream come true. I played on it for an hour without a single twinge or strain doing everything I could think of to test hand fatigue. Although it is semi-hollow and looks like a 335, it is not an arch top and the body is smaller, more like an SG. This actually makes it easier to play and can easily be used during quiet times at home. I ran it through my acoustic modeling pedal and it completely came to life again. The color spectrum it produces makes it like having a rack of guitars in one body. I love the humbuckers and the controls are responsive and noise-free. I am extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone. I haven't tried it with death metal but I threw some Foo Fighters at it and it took it without strain. It is so easy to play that it actually brought new technique out of my fingers. Five stars are well deserved.

            Great 12 string

            By Gary Evans

            from Sandy, Utah

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I am a bass player but also teach and play guitar. I had a 1973 Guild F212 I bought new and in 2000 gave to my brother. I have wanted a good 12 string again but didn't want to pay the price for a Guild. My guitarist in my rock band got a Boca and I couldn't keep my hands off it. For the money I believe it is the best value for a 12 string guitar on the market. I was already aware of the balance problem with the strap button and simply put another one on the top screw of the neck plate. It still pulls down a little, but I tightened the strap enough that it hangs tight against my body. I can trade that little irritation for the great neck action and the sound I get out of it. It's going to be used up with a lot of love and satisfaction.

            Electric 12 string heaven

            By Tom Horan

            from Yaphank. New York

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

All the positive reviews are true. I've had it about 10 days. This guitar looks, plays and sounds great. Bridge pickup a little too bright for me but neck and neck plus bridge are excellent. It would be an astonishing value even if it cost a couple of hundred dollars more.I'm a basement hobbyist playing the Boca plugged into a Digitech 355 pedal and into my trusty, tank-like old Behringer Vintager AC 112. Plenty of Beatles, Byrds and Tom Petty sounds here. I have never played (or seen) a 12 string Ric but if you added up the total cost of this guitar, pedal and amp it would be half the price of the Ric. Great bargain. Remedy for the heavy neck: Use a Panet Waves Quick Release Guitar Strap System. One part loops around the neck and clips into a second loop that attaches to any cheap guitar strap. Yes, it freezes the neck if you play standing and yes, you will look like a 60's folkie. But it works. Use it sitting down also, so neck won't hit the floor if you move suddenly. Guitar fits snugly in Road Runner hard shell case. Okay for hobbyist but a gigging musicians might want something sturdier.
