I purchased this guitar about 8 months ago, but it is not my primary instrument. I wanted a solid 12 string that had a good acoustical sound, but was easily amplified without the need for EQۡs, sound hole, or transducer type pickups and other issues related to a standard acoustic guitar. The guitar has a wide neck across the fret board, good fret spacing, and low action straight from the box. The intonation was good in both open chord and bar chord playing at the 12th fret. I have medium large hands so the wide neck did not pose a problem and it makes picking comfortable, but someone with small hands may find it a bit difficult. The guitar is not balanced well at all and is top heavy. This causes the head to naturally tip downward while playing if youۡre standing up. If 12 string is your main axe it could be a little strenuous playing the guitar for long periods. The guitar is fairly basic with a single volume, tone control, and 3-way pickup selector. The form, fit, and finish is very good and it has the same weight and feel as an ES style guitar with a smaller body. It easily produces a nice warm sound of an acoustic as well bright sustain and crunch. This makes it easy to get a both an acoustic and electric sound from the guitar. Iۡve given the guitar an overall rating of 4 out of 5 because of the balance issue and wide neck, but for the price this is an outstanding guitar for those times when you want the chorus sound only a 12 string can give you.

02/07/10 I ordered this guitar through Guitar Center in Tulsa,OK. back in November. I got the amber sunburst. The price had lowered so I went for it, looking to get an electric 12 string into my collection of guitars. Listen folks, I went through 2 of these trying to get a good one, and it just wasn't happening! The craftsmanship & workmanship on these guitars were both defective! The first one had a neck pickup that was crooked, the high E string saddle was off kelter, 4 piece body, wiring showing through the F hole because the tacky strip inside that's supposed to hold them back had come loose, the F hole binding was defective, the nut had defects in it, one tuner had a washer upside down, and the Dean EVO case I ordered for it had glue smears all over the seams, and the Dean logo was crooked! The second one had a nut way too high, headstock had a chip in the black finish, three of the washers on the tuners were upside down, sloppy paint around the headstock, position marker had a small chipped spot in the fretboard. The second case also had glue smears along the seams, & it wouldn't close evenly without aligning it by hand! The logo was crooked on this one also! The attention to detail was sadly lacking. The one good thing I really liked was the width of the neck. Felt good in my hands. Unfortunately I did not want to try for a third time. I sent them back and cancelled this order. Dean, your overseas employees have got to do better than this. Quality control was not doing there job on these two!

It's pretty good

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

OK, I must say first off that I am no athority on 12 strings, I'm into bass... But, this is a NICE guitar. The pick ups are grade "A", and it has a very clean, pure sound. No matter what style of music you play, be Rock, Blues, Country, or what ever,it's a good bye. Now, I'm not going to paint a total rosie picture, it's pretty heavy. It's not like pure lead or anything, just slightly overwieght. But, don't let this keep your money in your pocket, it is well worth it, and you sould deffinitly get it, I am!

Just received my Boca last nite. Overall it's an ace guitar!! Plays great, looks great. One minor setback. Volume pot not centered in dimple, makes th knob rub the finish. I cured that!!! I'm a Byrds fan and I can play them all. Great job,Dean.

Jangle for the Buck

By Guitar Slinger

from Hanover, Virginia

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

First things first, this is definitely not my "main" axe, but if you need a well-made, good-sounding 12 - string to cover Byrds or Beatles tunes, or just fill out your sound generally, grab this deal while you can. This three hundred dollar 12 string stays tuned, arrived properly intonated, looks and sounds good, and has a wide enough neck at the nut so that someone without tiny hands can actually play it (if you have ever played a Ric 12 you know what I mean). My band covers some late 60's material, and it nails "Nowhere Man" and "Get Together" without breaking the bank. It is a little top-heavy, but that is to be expected, but it is relatively light-weight and easy to play. Seriously, for the cost of some effects pedals you can get a usable instrument to expand your musical options and not break the bank. I have a number of fairly expensive, high quality guitars that I use much more than the Boca, but I feel as if I got a great deal for my money, and I wouldn't want to give it up. If you have the money, get one before they are gone - this guitar is worth it!

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I realy don't need to say much about this little gem other then if you are in the market for an electric 12 string buy this sweet 12!!!! I have been playing guitar for 38+ years and have played MANY guitars. This gem is as good or better then any I have played. Even the very high dollar customs. Nothing needs luthing on this guitar. Everything is great right out of the box. For the folks whom don't like the tonality of this 12, might think about getting an amp that sounds the way they like it to. No need to change potentiometers, hardware or rewiring. Head stock is what it is. It's a 12. Pick ups sound great. No need to spend big bucks to get a quality 12 string. If you buy this guitar you won't be disappointed!!!!

Great Buy - Great Service

By Jerry S.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Thanks Guitar Center for your support in purchasing this item. Straight out of the box this guitar came fully tuned up, action was set beautifully, 1mm at the 17th fret - just the way I like em. when I looked at the neck and checked the truss rod adjustment she was set at .012 at the 8th fret. I was concerned that I would really be getting something that may not be playable at that price but I have absolutely no regrets. I would recommend this to anyone interested. It was quite a pleasant surprise.

Dean Boca 12 String Revised Review

By Cliff Hughes

from Miami,OK

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

09/26/10 I wrote a review back on 02/07/10. I went through 2 of these guitars in late 2009 trying to get a good one, but the workmanship & quality were poor on both of them. I returned them. I thought I would try one more time, so on 09/20/10, I thought third time would be the charm, & it was! This one was very nice. It had a beautiful flame top, the mahogany back was much better wood than I had seen on the previous ones. The neck was why I came back to this guitar. I love the width, which feels very good, and you can chord easily. The mini Grover keys are a plus. After tuning up, I found that nice chimey sound I was after. For the price, it's a no brainer if your looking for an affordable guitar. The Rickenbackers have a narrow neck I don't care for. And the price is hard to swallow these days. I ordered the Dean EVO case for this guitar, and it fits perfectly, and this one was much nicer than the previous ones I had ordered and had to return due to quality, such as logo crooked, tacky glue smears on the seams. This new one was what I expected in quality. So, in summary, Dean has stepped up and put out a much better guitar in quality than before. John Bunting at Guitar Center in Tulsa, OK always takes care of me. I am a happy camper now. Try one, good value for the money.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I read all the reviews before buying and was excited to get this guitar. Very pretty guitar. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. It had a bad tone control pot and would cut out on the lower end. The jack to plug in was loose, wires showing thru sound holes, etc.

Great Value & Quality

By Greg

from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I was a bit wary as some reviews noted poor quality, but had to take the chance due to the outstanding price and limited options without spending 5 times more. I couldn't be happier that I took this chance! I needed something similar to a Rick 360 about 2 months ago for my Tom Petty tribute band, and this great looking and sounding instrument filled the bill. The materials and workmanship appear to be top notch. Great intonation and harmonics. I actually prefer the wide neck on this Dean Boca 12 over the Rick. The only extremely slight disappointments are 1) the nut could stand to be more rounded, 2) I was expecting the body to be the size of other semi-hollow body guitars and it's smaller (more like a solid-body Gibson LP) and 3) It lacks a tail-piece to transfer the string tension off of the face of the body. This shouldn't really be a problem, as it's a semi-hollow body, but time will tell. If you're in the market for a great sounding and playing electric 12, save the extra grand or so and pick up one of these! Note to Guitar Center: Once a customer plays one of these, the orders will take off. KEEP A FLOOR DEMO OF ONE OF THESE IN STOCK AT ALL TIMES!

Great for the money

By Tony Errico

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I purchased this from Guitar Center about a year ago. This is a great deal. Out of the box perfect. Nice sound for Beatles and Birds covers. I noticed you need to add a little base to the sound, the pickups have a sharp biting sound. Beats spending 1 to 3k for a Epi, Gibson or Rick. I called Dean, they told me this fits in their case DHS EVO. I will purchase one soon.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I have never bought a guitar basically sight unseen. you know what I mean. For the price I was overly pleased with the craftsmanship. Head heavy, but very comfortable to play. Once tuned, stays tuned, that i was worried about. Bridge pickup too bright for my taste, but overall sound is sweet.

Dean Boca 12 String

By Fred Abrams

from Cherry Hill,NJ

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar based on other reviews which were pretty good. It doesn't have the rich harmonic sound i wanted, but it's not an accoustic. Turn the treble up on the tone knob and adjust the amp with more treble and you might get a better 12 string twang. It sounds to me like a rich 6 string. It is very light weight but also very top heavy. I'll have to put a strap button on the back of the head piece to better balance it. The fret board has good action and easy to play. Over all I like it.For the price, it's ok. It's nice looking ax too. I might try new strings from another maker too. Maybe new pickups?

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I had wanted a twelve string for a while. But it seemed that to get a good acoustic, I would have to shell out big bucks. This has all the fun but for a low price. This guitar stays in tune very well. The action is very easy. I like playing a wide variety of music on it.

New Updated Review

By Cliff Hughes

from Miami,OK

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Ok, I went through 3 of these guitars over a course of some time. The first two had major defects, and the third which I thought was going to be the keeper, turned out to have a twist in the neck. My guitar tech measured the fretboard before starting the setup, and discovered quite a difference across the fretboard. This would lead to problems later, so I sent this one back also. This time when I spoke to customer service at Guitar Center, I decided to get the Cherry Burst instead of the Amber Burst like the other three were. This fourth Dean was the one! Very nice mahogany grain on the back. Pleasing looks, but what really sells me on these is the wide neck. That's why I stayed in there trying to get the right one. Quality unfortuneately is not uniform on these guitars. So fourth time was the charm this time, and I'm keeping this one! For the money, this is a no brainer for an electric 12 string. With a good setup you will love this guitar. As far as these coming from the factory all ready setup is something I've never encountered. If you have a professional guitar tech in your area, it is money well spent to have this setup properly. I love the chimey sound I get with it. Pickups do just fine as is. I'm not going to change them. I got a great deal from Guitar Center in Tulsa to boot, where I ordered it. And yes, get the EVO case for it. If you get a good one, they are nice.

Pleasantly surprised!

By Ronald B

from Southern Maine

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I got my first guitar at the age of 6, and since then I've always owned at least one... occasionally letting the collection creep up in to the 15 or 16 range. After whittling the collection down to two electrics, one acoustic and a mandolin, I found myself itching to bring a 12-string back into the line-up. In my on-line searches I kept running across the Dean Boca, always thinking that at the price it's got to be junk. Not finding anything else that excited me, I started reading some reviews of the Boca and started to consider it as an interim step as my search continued. Order placed, guitar arrived a few days later, well packed (triple-boxed!) and in perfect condition. Out of the box it was correctly intonated and tuned down a few notes. It tuned up easily and after minimal re-re-re-tuning it was stable. As other reviews have said, it's a bit neck-heavy, but that's easy to get used to. The neck is wider than some 12-strings I've owned, but it actually makes this guitar more playable IMHO. The fit and finish throughout the instrument is exceptional. No gaps, no creaks, no finish imperfections.... I could find nothing to complain about! The acoustic sound is very nice for just sitting back and noodling. The jury is still out on the electric sound.. it's good, but I almost think being able to split the humbuckers might be an improvement. I really like the appearance of the transparent amber finish. It has sort of a "honey" coloring and on mine the side were very well matched. I used to have an Ibanez Artist with a very similar look and I always regretted letting that one go. In summary, this is really a very nice guitar. I'm very glad I grabbed one, especially at such a great price. I'd say that if you're thinking of adding a semi-hollow, electric axe to your flock, you would do well to consider this guitar.

Very happy with it

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I got this one last week, and I'm loving it. It sounds great, if plays nice, and its comfortable on the fret-board. Its great if you are playing some rather simple songs. I am still getting used to it for the more complicated stuff. There is only one thing I don't like about it that it shares in common with bass guitars. The neck is the heaviest thing on it, so if you are standing up playing it, you will need either a strong arm, or a strap that will keep it in place. But if you are sitting down playing it, it works great. I have 2 guitars (out of eleven) that are my primary guitars. An Epiphone Les Paul Nightfall, and an Ibanez RG-8. This Dean 12 string is a great addition to my collection, so I give this a thumbs up. And it's fairly in-expensive for an electric 12 string. Get one now before they stop making them!

Couldn't agree more

By Brian Surks

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I love 12-string guitars. I have let go of all of them because my hands just couldn't keep up with what I wanted to do on them. They were all acoustic and my fatigue always overcame my desire. Light strings helped with the fatigue but not completely and I also lost the sound I was looking for. When I let them go I always missed them. Recently I thought "Why not try an electric? The action would be much tighter.". I looked at inexpensive ones and didn't feel comfortable investing the money even though the price was low. I read the reviews on this one and kept coming back to it. I couldn't find one to play first so, because of Guitar Center's generous return policy, I decided to order one of these and try it out. It is less expensive than the rest but, trust me, it is not cheap. I fell in love with it as soon as I brought it up to pitch. It is light enough and very well balanced. The action on it is a dream come true. I played on it for an hour without a single twinge or strain doing everything I could think of to test hand fatigue. Although it is semi-hollow and looks like a 335, it is not an arch top and the body is smaller, more like an SG. This actually makes it easier to play and can easily be used during quiet times at home. I ran it through my acoustic modeling pedal and it completely came to life again. The color spectrum it produces makes it like having a rack of guitars in one body. I love the humbuckers and the controls are responsive and noise-free. I am extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone. I haven't tried it with death metal but I threw some Foo Fighters at it and it took it without strain. It is so easy to play that it actually brought new technique out of my fingers. Five stars are well deserved.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Almost a great guitar out of the box, but wait, not so fast...With any 12-string you just need to accept in advance that this will be a more finicky instrument. There is just a lot more going on in terms of tuning, intonation, bridge height, etc... so while it was OK out of the box, I had a basic set-up done at GC with new strings and that took it from 3 stars...to 5 stars. Bake that $50 set-up into your purchase price and you won't be disappointed. Once done, however, incredible sounds and craftsmanship at this price point. In the 12-string market there's a lot of high-end guitars, and an lot of cheap guitars. Finding a reasonably-priced "in between" instrument that you'd be proud to play is a tough job but Dean absolutely nailed it with the Boca. It's fun, unique and adds a great sound to your set on those songs that call for some extra ring.

Important to say that I've heard of Dean for a while now (since back in the late '70s when they came out) but my first purchase was a Dean Backwoods banjo I bought earlier this year. I saw the pound-for-pound workmanship and features over the other higher-priced, name brand banjos and was so pleased with that purchase - that I decided to take a chance on a Dean 12-string electric. Very happy, similar positively-surprised experience at every turn. The more I play it the more I appreciate what went into it.

Final Note on color: I was concerned in advance that the GC photo looked awfully yellow with a bright red strip as an afterthought. That was NOT the case with my Boca-12 - it was a classic maple-to-red sunburst that showed some nice work in the paint shop.

Overall, if you are looking for a 12 that does the unique things that 12s are supposed to do, you need to consider this instrument. Dollar for dollar it's the best.
