Amazing banjo after some setting up. You cant go wrong!

By Jesse Dean

from Seattle, Washington

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

First of all, this banjo is great for the price. If you don't have a problem with adjusting the bridge and truss rod (not to difficult) this is an amazing instrument. It is primarily tuned in open G tuning or simply tuned like a guitar. I'm an experienced guitar player, so picking up the dean backwoods 6 was a breeze. There is a bit of a learning curve, as this isn?t a guitar, but if you know your guitar chords well enough you just have learn a bit about rolls and other technique. I love the Grover tuners on this banjo, and they provide amazing ease when tuning. The only downside of the banjo itself is the strap hooks. If you use a regular clip on banjo strap the metal will come off. i avoided this by simply using some string to connect the clip to the hook. The BW6 does take a bit of setting up, for when I received the banjo intonation was terrible. The octave played at the 11th fret. I fixed this by loosening the strings and moving the bridge back about an inch until intonation was correct. I also lowered the action a bit by means of the truss rod, but that was merely out of preference. This thing looks amazing too, especially on the back of the resonator. You won?t be disappointed with this buy.

Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo

By Kevin Bryant

from Martinsville, IN.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

Just recevied the Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo from GC about a week ago. Great product for the price! Anyone who can play a guitar can play the Dean 6. I'm in a local band and we have a New Year's gig and I will add the Dean 6 to the show. The banjo sound will add a new dimension to a few select songs. I'm happy with the purchase and the service from Guitar Center is excellent.

Restring it!

By Bendeschaad

from Milan, Illinois

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I have played guitars for 40 years. I bought the Dean banjitar about 1 month ago. The banjo itself is of good quality, nice finish, O.K. looking. I reset the neck; reset the bridge; placed banjo strings on it; tuned it to a "G" chord. It now gets a banjo sound. The grover tuners are a must. You need to know how to play a regular guitar reasonably well to make this banjitar sound good. A good luthier is helpful if you cannot do the work yourself. The banjitar frets well with good harmonics and intonation (after I set it up as described). In the lower fret positions you get good tone, which, carries through to about the 11th fret. On the higher frets the tone is somewhat dulled. Using fingerpicks (like with a regular banjo) is really a must. The strap hooks are cheap and will fall off (replace them). Good price. I am playing about 2 hour per day and getting good tone (bright), faster with fingers, and really enjoying the banjitar. Hope this helps. Being honest as I can.

Very well worth it

By Mason

from Redondo Beach, CA

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I am a guitar player. I've played for a while, but I thought it might be fun to have a banjo. When I came across this banjo, I decided to get it. It was well worth the money. It is so much fun to have a banjo to play with. I love the sound of it, even though I've never been a big fan of bluegrass music. If you're a guitarist that just wants to have a banjo for the fun of it and don't want to actually learn the banjo, then I reccomend this banjo here.

6 string banjo

By Pat

from Chicago, Il

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I opted to buy a different brand than Dean because it has a longer scale but I'm sure it is much the same. I have been playing guitar, bass and keys in bands for close to 40 years. The band I'm in now plays a lot of newer female country rock songs and several have banjo's in them. The price was right so I took a chance. Since I knew nothing about banjo's setting it up was a chore but once I got it where I wanted it I just love this thing. There is very little learning curve. Just play guitar chords but pick the strings separately rather than strumming. Strumming sounds good too where applicable. If you told me a year ago that I would be playing a banjo I'd laugh in your face. I am going to add a LR BAGGS pickup and a preamp soon but this thing is very loud acoustically. Just not enough for a full band. Best musical investment I ever made. Pt

second review

By Northern Player

from NWT

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

Here is my second kick at this. I finally got the instrument back from my Luthier. Denis is a great guy. He did try a regular setup but it was pretty much impossible. In the end, he had to pull the neck off and re-set it in order to get the job done. He also had to do a fair bit of work to get the head tightened. In the end, the luthier said the components of the instrument are excellent. The guy who put it together must have been having a bad day because he really messed this one up or he/she simply did not know what he was doing. All of that said, it is now an excellent instrument and it is a whole lot easier to play. The action is very nice and I am enjoying learning to plunk out tunes that now take on a completely different sound with this thing. I still say it was worth the money but it needed a lot of work.

Great for the money

By Northern Player

from NWT

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

Well, I shopped online for one of these banjitars for awhile. Went to the Vegas GC store and bought this one. Fit and finish a re fine. Out of the box, the bridge had to be set and the staff, while helpful and willing were not really able to get it just right. I will give them a C for effort. It plays really loud! This is not as easy as you might think to play it well. You can certainly get started quickly but it takes some adjusting. It might be an idea to tune it to open G and then learn to play it like a real Banjo to get the feel. This thing is heavy so get a strap like I did so you can control it better. Darn banjo slides all over the place if you are used to a guitar. I have been trying to pick some blues on it. The type of sound it produces adds to the experience. It really needs to go to a Luthier to be properly set up. That is good advice for any guitar you buy. It can really smooth out an instrument and make it easier to play. I am not disappointed with this purchase. It needs a little work and may then warrant the full five stars.

My Mule

By Darren Toth

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I love this thing. I have to admit, I don't have decades of experience with strings, or any musical instrument for that matter. But 5 months ago, the Dean backwoods 6-string came into my life, and I have had so much fun with it, I have come to love strings and I just can't put them down. I now own an Acoustic, an Electric, a Bass, two Violins, an Autoharp...my point is, the 6-string banjo is a great instrument that reminds everyone, beginner and pro alike, that music is suppose to be fun. And man, is this thing fun. I call it my Mule, not quite a banjo, not a guitar, but it has sparked a love of making music that I never knew I had. Seriously, if you are someone who needs a reminder of how much fun PLAYING with music can be, get this little gitbox. It started a passion that takes up every day of my life.

Alot of fun

By David

from Apalachin, NY

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

Banjitar, Guitjo, 6 string banjo or whatever you want to call it.. I call it a funjo. For the price this is a nice looking and good sounding instrument. The only problem is the action is a little high and I wish there was some instructions on where to put the saddle when setting it up.. Probably a good idea to take it to your local guitar guy and have it set up properly.. But other than that it has a nice loud tone to it. You could easily play this around a bunch of Martins with heavy strings on them outside..

Dualing Banjo's

By LA7

from Parma Hts. ,Ohio

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I used to own the aria sb100 5 string banjo, which had traditional banjo tuning. I thought being a guitar player, banjo would be no problem. I was wrong, this solved my problem beautifully. If you can play guitar, you can play this banjo no problem, & it's really well made. I always wan't to play banjo since I saw Deliverance, now I can. Settle on the porch and play away, but, don't go in the woods.
