I'd have to say that this guitar has topped all of the other guitars I have played, acoustic-electric, or just acoustic too. It has an amazing sound when you play it off or on an amp. When you play it on an amp turn on the phase option on the sound settings on the guitar and you'll be blown away. The phase makes the guitar sound even MORE better, which I thought couldn't of been done. This is my first Dean guitar, and it won't be my last!

As I continue my beginner's odyssey of finding a good guitar - meaning solid spruce top, good intonation and playability, reasonable price - I come back to this Dean Performer that I owned briefly and I am here to warn you off of it! Play a lot of guitars around $300 or less, and don't be taken in by a pretty face. I even got a GC employee to slightly admit he thinks these Deans suck. I am currently playing a solid top grand concert-sized Ibanez that would retail for under $300 and it's a gem! I wish I'd found it before I laid out the big bucks for a Martin rosewood dreadnaught. So now, the dread sits in the case like a delicate flower and the Ibanez gets played on the spur of the moment.

I have owned the Dean Performer for over a year now and still play it constantly. It has held up to my abuse and miss-use pretty well. I feel that it is an attractive, comfortable player, but the neck action is not very nice. String buzzing is an issue on the B and high E strings (even after truss rod adjustments) and the action is pretty high. The only other complaint I have it the on-board amp has poor quality tones. It breaks up at half volume even on the best acoustic amps and has been the primary source of my frustrations. BUT - I am happy with the guitar; neck is smooth and playable, tuners are reliable and the sound quality is much better than expected for the price of the guitar. I would consider getting a clear pick guard installed on it right away because the clear finish is very delicate and gets scuffed easily. If you play out professionally, you may want to consider something more well built, but for most players I would give this one a serious consideration.
