Bought this to amplify my first acoustic which didn't have electronics. It's pretty straight forward to use, although it won't fit all sound holes, I had to file the edges down to get it to fit in mine. It doesn't have any bells and whistles, and it's passive, so no batteries are needed, both of which are plusses in my book. The sound was never all quite there though, especially on the B and high E strings, they just didn't come through very clearly. As far as reliability, I'd have to rate it pretty low. The 1/4 jack to plug into the amp once just detached and got stuck in my amp's input, and I had to get some needle nose pliers to pull it out and then re attach it. I've been using my onboard electronics now that I have them, but I went to give this another try the other day after a good half year of not touching it, only to find that the cable no longer works at all and all I could get was a crackling sound. The cord just looks weak so I was always in fear of breaking it. It's also a little obtrusive to play with...gets in the way of picking and whatnot. Not to be too negative, though, the overall sound that it gets is actually pretty good. Very strummy sounding, and it catches left hand technique like hammer ons and pull offs a lot better than a piezo does. I would say that if you are on a budget but need to get louder, and you're the type of person who can be very careful and gentle with it, it will get you by for a while at least. The only other reason to buy it would be if you rarely need to amplify your acoustic and only plan on using it from time to time. If you're actively playing out and need something great sounding and dependable night after night, look elsewhere.

Amazing.

By emerald876

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

This little thing is amazing. I use it with my Yamaha F-325. It sounds pretty good even with distortion. I really only got this to record with higher volume, but the only downside is that it doesn't pick up the taps on the body. That's mostly the stuff I play on acoustic. Overall, this is awesome.

A Really Nice Pickup for the Price

By CynthB

from Salinas, CA

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

This is a really sweet pickup, which really makes things easy for someone like me who is just starting out. I appreciate how easy it is to use it with my digital tuner and how I can just plug it into any amp or pedal. Sure, it took a bit of time and practice to adjust my style of strumming and picking, but the freedom of not needing a second mic makes it all worth the effort. It'll be a while before I can get my first acoustic-electric, but until then this is a great way to plug in and play.

Captures natural sound but has bad Hummmm

By Bill See

from Catoosa, OK

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I play vintage instruments live. So I usually mic them in order to get the natural sound and nuances of the vintage guitars. However, I occasionally need to have an acoustic electric. I was advised to get the DM Pro Mag. I got the single coil at first. I was very impressed with its ability to make a vintage acoustic guitar sound like a vintage acoustic. However the constant Hummmmmmm made it unusable for a performance. I returned it and got a humbucking version (which I should have done from the get go). The humbucking version works perfectly and is silent. Spend a few more dollars and get the humbucking version like Pro Mag Grand or the Pro Mag Grand.

By Pablo

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Dean Markley is a good brand for pickups and this was the very first one I had before I bought some acoustic-electric guitars. I loved how this sounded with any guitar I used it on and would use again if I needed it.

Great acoustic pickup

By brian817

from Ft. Worth, TX

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I've owned one of these Dean Markley acoustic pickups for at least 10 years and can say it's great for what it does and is simple to mount and use and has never hindered my strumming or picking. The natural acoustic tone of a guitar is nicely amplified by the pickup, but I would definately suggest using an equalizer pedal to help squash feedback frequencies and to lower the bass response, which can be overwhelming depening on your style and gauge of strings and result in sustaining longer than needed. This pickup has never let me down, either using it live or to record.

NEW REVIEW: great sounding acoustic pickup

By Kevin Nichols

from Florence, SC

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I have a Martin HD-28 and if you don't what that is it's a 2,500 dollar guitar. So if your not stupid you wouldn't drill into guitar like this one, But I wanted an acoustic pickup. Here is the anwser. Some poeple say that this pickup makes your guitar sound the same, no mater if you have a 200$ guitar or a 2,000$ guitar. it's all lies this thing sounds like MY GUITAR, AND IT WILL SOUND LIKE YOUR GUITAR IF YOU GET IT just louder itsn't that what we want? (GRADE A+)

Not so sure about this one...

By Big Jim

from Tulsa, OK

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I bought one of these for a 1979 Takamine 12 string I play that I don't care to carve up to install the connector end of a piezo. Two issues - the signal level out of it is very low, especially compared to the piezo outputs in my other acoustics. The other is that it sounds like it is distorted or trying to break up when driven the least little bit a bit (like it might with 12 strings driving it, rather than 6...). It's so-so through an amp, and bad on the recorder. Too bad, because the guitar sounds like sweet nectar through a mic. Its probably on its way back to Guitar Center this week for an exchange of some kind. The only plus is - no batteries required... I am not impressed with this unit.

Great Sound in the Right Setting

By Carly

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I usually love the sound, but had shows at two different venues where I was plagued by a resonant buzzing, no matter what we did to rectify it. With the right PA, it sounds like a dream.

There are better pickups

By iowaismine

from iowa

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Using this pickup only got in my way. It's a big pickup and it sits right where your fingers will be if you pluck or where your pick will be if you're strumming away. And as far as the tone is concerned; it's pretty thin - I used a DOD FX10 preamp to beef up the tone, it wasn't bad after that. I would recommend trying out the fishman rare earth humbucker, it's discreet, noise cancelling, and produces a rich and accurate acoustic reproduction.

Great Pickup

By Shane

from Grand Rapids MI

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I play a Washburn Acoustic and I usually play to smaller crowds of just friends or at a small get together. Recently just got a little more popular and am starting to play some small shows. So I went out to get an acoustic pick up to play to some larger venues. Picked this up today and I really have no regrets. It is perfect. Slides right in without causing any damage to your guitar and it produces a nice clean tone. You may get some feedback if too close to some electronics or something, but that is expected. I know when I played too close to my computer, the pick up picked up some pretty interesting noises. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this especially if you are on a budget.

great pickup that is ready for work

By Ray Lawrence Jr.

from Machessney Park, IL

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

If you are a working musician on a tight budget you will want to get this pickup get 2 so you will have a backup in case you snap a chord off. It is a really good quick fix for a guitar that has no pickup. I tour with mine and have been cross country several times and I have played several types of venues and a couple festivals. This is a great pickup. I sometimes use a direct box on large stages and you may want to get one of those too if you play big stage shows. It just makes it easier for the sound guy if you have all this stuff or just let the sound man do it. When you are done it goes in the case and off to the next gig. The cool thing is the price and ease of use. This pickup is a keeper and if it keeps you working it is a good thing. If you need a great pickup that will not break the bank , this is it.

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Can't believe all of the "noisy" complaints. If you have a properly grounded system and a decent amp you won't have noise problems. This pickup is probably not your problem. For the money, it works great.
