Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Bass Strings/5-string

By Operationanti

from Spokane, WA

Comments about Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Medium/Long 5-String Bass Strings:

My friend bought a Dean Edge series bass a few years ago, and I end up borrowing it quite a bit to record basslines on my digital 8-track. Bass strings are definitely not cheap, so for his first set, he bought the most affordable ones he could find. The sound was a bit "flat," and failed to cut through the mix. After shelling out a few extra bucks and getting the Dean Markley Blue Steel strings, the sound was extremely sharp and well defined, with greater resonance and overall improvement in the punch and low-end response. As far as durability, a set of Blue Steel strings can go for a long time before any substantial changes in the sound. Not exactly the cheapest strings on the planet, but if you use these instead of the cheap-o's, you will definitely hear where your money went.

Dean Markley Blue Steel Bass Strings

By Chris Conway

from Orrville, Ohio

Comments about Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Medium/Long 5-String Bass Strings:

I've been using the Blue Steel on a 5-String Tobias Killer B for about ten years now. I prefer them over any string out there regardless of price. The sound is the main reason I use them. If your going for a brighter sound with a good bottom end then these are the you know what. Simply Awesome for slapping/funk style. They stay in tune. They retain their brightness longer. Another plus and money saver is minimal fret wear. I also use them on my electric guitars.

not for me..

By Harrison

from Riverside, Ca

Comments about Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Medium/Long 5-String Bass Strings:

In my opinion, when a string is called blue STEEL, they should sound like a steel string. These have a similar attack sound to DR Hi beams. If your looking for a steve harris tone then without a buy these. But if your loocking for a nasty growling steel tone like alex webster more recent stuff, then these are not for you. Also these strings do not stay in tune at all at standard tuning. I usually have them tuned down to G# so that they will stay in tune. I play death with my fingers and have a really strong attack (play really hard... lol) and these strings just sound mellow and give my modulus a very P-Bass sound. all in all. decent not the worst strings ive baught, but ill stick to my ernie ball powerslinky. :}

Superior sound and feel

By Blair

from Washington, DC

Comments about Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Medium/Long 5-String Bass Strings:

I play melodic metal with a pick. These strings sound ridiculous. I've used DR Lo-Riders, D'Addario Bright Roundwounds, and Fender Super Bass strings for years. The tone of the Blue Steels embarrasses those. One thing to get used to is the rough feel of the strings. They started eating up my Big Stubby pick so I had to use my Dunlop flat picks which work fine. The playability of these strings is insane. I play faster and just plain better now. I have to say that these strings are definitely not for everyone because of the feel, but they're my permanent strings now. I love these.

Very Bright Sound ....Almost Too Bright.

By Doug Ellison

from Decatur, IL

Comments about Dean Markley 2679 Blue Steel Medium/Long 5-String Bass Strings:

I bought these on recommendation of a friend. They are probably great for the player who does a great deal of slap and pop, but alas, this not me very often. Very sharp attack and big increase in what I will call "crispness" for lack of a better term. I had a problem with the low B string right from the start. It almost sounds like fret buzz.... but seems to be coming from inside the string... (yeah, that's a new one on me too). The other 4 strings have good sound intonation quality, but the B seems to have muddy harmonic overtones for some reason no matter what I do. No idea what would cause this effect other than maybe the cryo treatment. I'll give them a try for awhile and see if anything changes. I'm used to a more mellow tone on my bass, but I think these deserve at least a fair test. I'll post a follow up in a few weeks or sooner if I find an answer to the unusual B sound.

I get complemented on my sound at every live show. Between my SVT-4 Pro and these Cold Blue Steels there?s nothing like them!!!
