My friend bought a Dean Edge series bass a few years ago, and I end up borrowing it quite a bit to record basslines on my digital 8-track. Bass strings are definitely not cheap, so for his first set, he bought the most affordable ones he could find. The sound was a bit "flat," and failed to cut through the mix. After shelling out a few extra bucks and getting the Dean Markley Blue Steel strings, the sound was extremely sharp and well defined, with greater resonance and overall improvement in the punch and low-end response. As far as durability, a set of Blue Steel strings can go for a long time before any substantial changes in the sound. Not exactly the cheapest strings on the planet, but if you use these instead of the cheap-o's, you will definitely hear where your money went.
I've been using the Blue Steel on a 5-String Tobias Killer B for about ten years now. I prefer them over any string out there regardless of price. The sound is the main reason I use them. If your going for a brighter sound with a good bottom end then these are the you know what. Simply Awesome for slapping/funk style. They stay in tune. They retain their brightness longer. Another plus and money saver is minimal fret wear. I also use them on my electric guitars.
In my opinion, when a string is called blue STEEL, they should sound like a steel string. These have a similar attack sound to DR Hi beams. If your looking for a steve harris tone then without a buy these. But if your loocking for a nasty growling steel tone like alex webster more recent stuff, then these are not for you. Also these strings do not stay in tune at all at standard tuning. I usually have them tuned down to G# so that they will stay in tune. I play death with my fingers and have a really strong attack (play really hard... lol) and these strings just sound mellow and give my modulus a very P-Bass sound. all in all. decent not the worst strings ive baught, but ill stick to my ernie ball powerslinky. :}
