  • Boca delivers Bang for your Buck

As reviewed by Dexter on 6/24/2009

I purchased this guitar about 8 months ago, but it is not my primary instrument. I wanted a solid 12 string that had a good acoustical sound, but was easily amplified without the need for EQ?s, sound hole, or transducer type pickups and other issues related to a standard acoustic guitar. The guitar has a wide neck across the fret board, good fret spacing, and low action straight from the box. The intonation was good in both open chord and bar chord playing at the 12th fret. I have medium large hands so the wide neck did not pose a problem and it makes picking comfortable, but someone with small hands may find it a bit difficult. The guitar is not balanced well at all and is top heavy. This causes the head to naturally tip downward while playing if you?re standing up. If 12 string is your main axe it could be a little strenuous playing the guitar for long periods. The guitar is fairly basic with a single volume, tone control, and 3-way pickup selector. The form, fit, and finish is very good and it has the same weight and feel as an ES style guitar with a smaller body. It easily produces a nice warm sound of an acoustic as well bright sustain and crunch. This makes it easy to get a both an acoustic and electric sound from the guitar. I?ve given the guitar an overall rating of 4 out of 5 because of the balance issue and wide neck, but for the price this is an outstanding guitar for those times when you want the chorus sound only a 12 string can give you.

  • "Jangle for the Buck"

As reviewed by Guitar Slinger on 7/15/2010

First things first, this is definitely not my "main" axe, but if you need a well-made, good-sounding 12 - string to cover Byrds or Beatles tunes, or just fill out your sound generally, grab this deal while you can. This three hundred dollar 12 string stays tuned, arrived properly intonated, looks and sounds good, and has a wide enough neck at the nut so that someone without tiny hands can actually play it (if you have ever played a Ric 12 you know what I mean). My band covers some late 60's material, and it nails "Nowhere Man" and "Get Together" without breaking the bank. It is a little top-heavy, but that is to be expected, but it is relatively light-weight and easy to play. Seriously, for the cost of some effects pedals you can get a usable instrument to expand your musical options and not break the bank. I have a number of fairly expensive, high quality guitars that I use much more than the Boca, but I feel as if I got a great deal for my money, and I wouldn't want to give it up. If you have the money, get one before they are gone - this guitar is worth it!

  • Great Value & Quality

As reviewed by Greg on 1/28/2011

I was a bit wary as some reviews noted poor quality, but had to take the chance due to the outstanding price and limited options without spending 5 times more. I couldn't be happier that I took this chance! I needed something similar to a Rick 360 about 2 months ago for my Tom Petty tribute band, and this great looking and sounding instrument filled the bill. The materials and workmanship appear to be top notch. Great intonation and harmonics. I actually prefer the wide neck on this Dean Boca 12 over the Rick. The only extremely slight disappointments are 1) the nut could stand to be more rounded, 2) I was expecting the body to be the size of other semi-hollow body guitars and it's smaller (more like a solid-body Gibson LP) and 3) It lacks a tail-piece to transfer the string tension off of the face of the body. This shouldn't really be a problem, as it's a semi-hollow body, but time will tell. If you're in the market for a great sounding and playing electric 12, save the extra grand or so and pick up one of these! Note to Guitar Center: Once a customer plays one of these, the orders will take off. KEEP A FLOOR DEMO OF ONE OF THESE IN STOCK AT ALL TIMES!
