Overview

The Prophet-6 is Dave Smith' tribute to the poly synth that started it all”the Sequential Prophet-5. But it' not simply a reissue of a classic. Rather, as Dave puts it, œIt' the result of our effort to build the most awesome-sounding, modern analog poly synth possible. The Prophet-6 takes the best qualities of the original Prophet-5”true voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers”and adds enhancements such as studio-quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and more. The result is pure, unadulterated analog tone with the stability and reliability of a state-of-the-art modern synth.

Classic Tone, Classic Vibe
Central to the warm, punchy sound of the Prophet-6 are its two newly-designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) per voice. Continuously variable waveshapes provide the tonal palette with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves. There are two discrete filters per voice”a four-pole, resonant, low-pass inspired by the original Prophet-5 filter, and a two-pole, resonant, high-pass filter. Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the all-analog signal path.

Dual Effects
The dual effects section provides studio-quality reverbs, delays (standard and BBD), chorus and phase shifter. While the effects themselves are digital, with 24-bit, 48 kHz resolution, a true bypass maintains a full analog signal path. There' also an independent stereo distortion effect, which is 100% analog.

Poly Mod and Poly Step Sequencing
Also present from its classic predecessor is a Poly Mod section, with enhancements. True to the original, modulation sources are filter envelope and oscillator 2 (both with bi-polar control). Destinations include oscillator 1 frequency, oscillator 1 shape, oscillator 1 pulse width, low-pass filter cutoff, and high-pass filter cutoff. Another welcome reprise is Unison mode, which features configurable voice count (1-6 voices) and key modes. The polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step. You can create sequences polyphonically, with rests, and sync to an external MIDI clock. The full-featured arpeggiator can be synced to external MIDI clock as well.

Easy to Program
The knob-per-function front panel offers instant access to virtually all Prophet-6 functions. Included are 500 permanent factory programs in 10 banks of 100 programs. In addition to these, you can create and save up to 500 user programs of your own. Toggling off the Preset button enables live panel mode, in which the sound of the Prophet-6 switches to the current settings of its knobs and switches. In this state, what you see is what you hear.

Easy to Play
All of this awe-inspiring sound is packed into a four octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch that' an ideal combination portability and power for the project studio or the gigging musician.

P-6 Sounds Amazing

By Keyman

Pros

  • You want P-5 Sound - Here it is

Cons

  • Keyboard is insufficient at 49 keys

Best Uses

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6:

The P-6 sounds amazing with warm, rich sound reminiscent of versions 2 and 3 of the Prophet-5. The unison function is huge - Stack all 6 voices and add a little slop. The keyboard, however, is entirely too short unless you plan to use the P-6 primarily as a "Lead" type keyboard such as the Minimoog. Purchase the P-6 Module instead and midi it to a keyboard with at least 61 keys. If you were a P-5 fan, you're gonna' love this.

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6:

The DSI Prophet 6 is probably the most compelling Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer on the market at the moment. Having learned synthesis on Analog Moog's in the 70's it is clear to me that this little beast is the real deal. A modern Analog PolySynth wrapped in a very modern feature set. It's not a Moog, but then again you can't walk into a music store and buy a modern, programmable 6/12 Voice polyphonic analog Moog.

The design and layout is superb, with every knob and control right there in front of you for instant changes in modulation with no menu diving. In fact, there are no menus, just like the Prophet 5, however I did not find that limiting once I got used to it. The included sound set is excellent and much better than the sound set that DSI shipped with the Prophet 8 IMHO. If you are lucky enough to find a store that actually has the Prophet 6 on display you can use the 'Play' function in the sequencer section to preview the sounds. Just select a sound and press 'Play'. I found this virtual 'Demo Mode' by accident and for some reason it is not documented in the P6 manual. This really reduced the amount of time it took me to move through the 500 presets and note the ones that I wanted to go back to.

For me, the true analog sound of this machine is what made it stand out from the other DSI offerings, however it was the outstanding Arp/Sequencer and Digital Effects engine that convinced me that it was worth the heavenly price point. The ability to use the Poly-Chain feature to link two Prophet 6's together to create a 12 Voice, Analog tone monster and add in a full size keyboard and integrated power supply and there not much to be desired here. The available third party software really helps to round out the potential for using this in the studio and integrating it into a DAW setup.

You get what you pay for here folks and I would not hesitate to recommend the P6 to anyone who is sitting on the fence.

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6:

The Prophet 6 by Dave Smith Instruments has one of the richest analog sounds I've ever heard. It sounds lovely paired with my Moog. My only complaint about this instrument is more about Dave Smith Instruments as a company. Their quality control department is not of the same caliber as their instruments. I'm currently on my third Prophet 6.

The first Prophet 6 arrived with the knobs spinning off their central axis. It was a VERY wobbly action. The right audio out produced a lot of crackling. I thought these problems were exclusive to this unit so I returned it and awaited a second. The second arrived with its knobs spinning off central axis as well. Additionally, the High-Pass and Low-Pass filer sections on this synth have a knob for Envelope Amount. This knob is supposed to stop at 12 o'clock. This was not the case for the Low-Pass Filter on my second unit. That pot was mounted to the Amplifier Envelope's Attack pot.

I returned the second Prophet 6 and I'm currently on my third. Sonically there are no issues and they knobs are mounted in the correct positions but they are yet again spin off their central axis. The Prophet 6 synthesizers I've received are between serial numbers 01000-01700. I'd suggest if you get one between those numbers, you check to make sure the pots are properly mounted.

After my third Prophet 6 showed up faulty (verified by the Guitar Center staff) I received a shrug and a, "Do you want us to return it again?" Guitar Center can't guarantee me I won't receive another faulty Prophet 6 so I'm currently dealing with Dave Smith Instruments and received no word from them. I wouldn't suggest this synth to anyone until these problems are resolved.
