Overview

The Mopho Keyboard is a compact, affordable, and powerful monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is similar to a single voice of Dave Smith Instruments' Prophet '08, but with a couple of twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. Dave Smith Instruments has added two sub-octave generators (one per oscillator) for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk. It features the same semi-weighted keyboard action as Dave Smith Instruments' Prophet.

The Mopho Keyboard is an affordable, full-featured mono synth with a 100% analog audio path. The Mopho Keyboard features 32 full-sized, semi-weighted keys with velocity and aftertouch in a package about the same size as most 25-note controller keyboards. Choose from its 384 preset sounds or craft your own sounds with 25 soft-touch knobs and 20 switches.

The Mopho Keyboard features 2 oscillators, 2 sub-octave generators, a classic Curtis low-pass filter (2- or 4-pole), 3 five-stage envelope generators with ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release) plus delay, 4 LFOs (low-frequency oscillators), and real analog VCAs (voltage-controlled amplifiers). In addition, it also includes an arpeggiator, a gated 16 x 4 step sequencer (with 1 sequence per program), feedback, the ability to process external audio, and an extensive modulation matrix. Hit the Tap Tempo button to beat match or sync the arpeggiator, sequencer, and match LFOs to MIDI clock.

The Mopho Keyboard is fully programmable and all the parameters are logically arranged for easy access on the front panel. A free editor is also available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming.

You can integrate and automate the Mopho Keyboard with your computer and other hardware using standard MIDI jacks or with a direct USB connection. The eagle-eyed musician may find it odd that a monophonic synth has a unison on/off parameter, but when paired with a Dave Smith Instruments' Tetra (sold separately), the Mopho Keyboard makes an incredibly compact, extremely powerful five-voice poly synth. So for a ridiculously compact analog poly synth, use the Poly Chain output along with the Dave Smith Instruments' Tetra (sold separately) to expand the Mopho Keyboard's polyphony.

Great little board

By DAMIAN KANDALEC

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Synth:

Dave Smith's Mopho is a really nice, good sounding, solid analog keyboard. Awesome presets, great tweaking capabilities, and nicely sized. It has the ability to to make traditional sounds, and also far out noise type experimental sounds. I haven't had this much fun with a keyboard sine the Novation K-Station.

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Synth:

i was all ways one of those ppl who thought vsts were just as good.. WOW was i wrong.. Analog really is king and is now the end all be all for this guy!... i love it the key pad is so expressive it really is prob one of the coolest synths in this range. only thing i can say against it is that there isnt any init patches it bothers me to wrie over factory sets forsome reason also u have to pay for the pro editor.have no fear though the free editor (downloaded)works good enough for me. the construction is very good metal knobs are sturdy and I dont for see any probs there. all in all this guy is awesome.. love the DSI so much i just baught a DSI evolver to go with it comes tomorrow and im stoked!

Bad Mopho!

By Dan McCurry

from Charleston, SC

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Synth:

Just got a chance to finally plug the Mopho in. It is called a Mopho for good reason. I am very pleased. I am not particularly synth-saavy and this seems pretty easy and intuitive. I like having a knob for one feature and not 10 like many other modern keyboards. The keyboard I can tell is very well made and solid. I didn't even know it was made in the USA before and was pleasantly surprised to see that when I got it. I think $800 for a B-A synth like this is worthwhile, especially it being USA made and so solid. I can tell it is in an entirely different league from the MicroKorg (my previous synth). I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

very nice little synth

By R.w. Fleming

from richmond, va

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Synth:

nice little synth nice key action. dave smith was known for his earlier synths such as the prophet 5 to be the most famous. this is another work of art reminded me of a digital moog prodigy which I owned years back in the music business. definitely a keyboard to be reckoned with.

Great little Mono Synth!!

By Dave O

from Murrieta Ca.

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Synth:

I have had a few synths, some digital like the Alesis Micron, DCO synths like the Juno 106, to full analog like my favorite, the Minimoog Voyager. This little guy has some great analog sound and a very reasonable price. Not to mention super light and portable. Really much to be said about the small package when the Minimoog is like 45 pounds, I was paranoid to bring it anywhere, but this one is no sweat! Great sound, pretty easy to program, suboscillators fatten up the sound nicely. The arpeggio and sequencer are nice, lots of LFO's, tons of syncing possibilities with all those features. I really like the aftertouch on this one, makes it feel more expressive then some other synths. The sound is a little different between DCO's and VCO's, I feel the DCO's are a bit more tame and VCO's are more organic sounding, but really no complaints about the sound of this guy, analog is totally worth it! The feel, sound, look, versatility, and fun are well worth it. Very recommended little monosynth!!!
