Overview

The 12-String Danelectro 12SDC Electric Guitar captures the jangly sounds of the '60s with a double-cutaway body made of laminated wood and 2 lipstick pickups. Modeled after the classic 59DC used by Jimmy Page, the guitar's "bottle" headstock is elongated to accommodate 12 sealed Gotoh tuners. Its wide neck makes the Danelectro 12 string easy to play. An improved fixed bridge is fully adjustable. The Danelectro 12SDC guitar's '59 vintage look includes details like a matte finish, seal-shaped pickguard, and textured tape binding on the sides.

Case sold separately.

I was pleasantly surprised with the playability and sound right out of the box. So much jangle I thought the reverb was on. Great job with that. The aluminum nut probably helps. Issues: the switch is junk. A Radio Shack SPDT switch (center off, such as 275-654 with the top clipped) fixed that. The tone cap is way too big. A .100 uf is too dark. I went with a .022, but .047 would be good too. The first fret was low on one side, causing buzzing. Had to pry it up a little. That said, it's a very good playing and sounding instrument, especially given its material makeup. The 12 strings and series wiring help cover the thinness of the pickups. Now if they just made orange an option...

This offering appears to be an updated retro-redo of earlier models. It was interesting to learn that a 60s variant (6-string?) was used by Jimmy Page (Led Zep) fame. There are various Youtube contemporary videos of him doing some riffs, of the 6-string.
My experience is playing around with one (a hollow body style). The strange vinyl white tape circling the body halves seems low quality, and if you look inside the hollow body's cut-out, you see flat black paint. The plastic knobs were also lower quality with the toggle switch being somewhat crude - like a home made electronic instrument kit. I have read that these items can be upgraded - leaving the lip stick style pickups intact. (I'd try to keep the look original.)
The neck and frets appeared decent, with the 12 compact tuners aligned on an attractive (headstock )?
I have read (internet) that some folks strongly recommend a "compressor" effects pedal to enhance/correct the "jangle" sound to simulate the Byrds, etc. The sound is very nice unplugged.

If you don't have a Rickenbacker....

By Daniel Klementovich

from Lancaster PA

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

You may be disapointed to own this axe. HOWEVER,if you buy this, you will NOT be let down to achieve that Byrds,Led Zep, Tom Petty sound with your favorite pedals. Yes, it is a solid body. Yes it's composite wood.Yes it doesn't have a resounding chamber. But, the neck is straight and the neck is small for no-so-large hands. It plays like a 6 string electric. After extensive shopping online and a long awaited ship date. Iit was worth the hassle and a 6 month wait. You have so much control over the sound through very simple controls.Watch the volume. I recommend this as an inexpensive and good-sounding alternative to a Rick. But, set your sights big. I know I will. Get it in the mean time. But make your sound your own.

to date this is one of the best buys i've made in guitars. this is a wonderful instrument right out of the box. Down side is that the company no longer makes a case for this item. Buying this will enhance anyones guitar collection. I say it's a must buy !

    Great axe for the money!

    By doug dickeson

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

Pros: Great jangly sound, string changing should be easy (Ricky owners, you know what I'm talking about!) Inexpensive enough that you don't have to worry about it much. By far the easiest electric 12 that I've ever played. Cool retro Dano look. Cons: Neck stability leaves just a bit to be desired. You need to be a bit more careful when playing to not put too much pressure on the neck. Otherwise, it starts to go out of tune. Overall, though? it's less than $400, and a great axe for the money! I'm just blown away by this guitar for what it cost. reminds me of some of my old guitars I had in the 60's and early 70's. great action and feel and fun as all heck to play. why pay 2000 plus dollars for a Rickenbacker.

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar, period. Maybe many buy this because they can't afford a Ric 12 string, but I think this is a beautiful instrument in its own right. The craftsmanship is top notch, I don't care where it was made. Over my 25 years of playing, I've owned plenty of American-made instruments from the likes of Gibson, Martin, Fender, and Guild. This instrument is one of the nicest instruments I've played right up there with those other names, and even better than some of the American-made instruments I've owned.

My only niggle with this instrument is the 1/4 inch jack became intermittent after a few years. I know for the cost, this instrument probably does not have highest quality electronics in it. Not a big deal. I can replace the electronics easily if and when they go bad. The pots still work perfectly and the pickups still sound great. The important thing that I cannot change is the way this instrument is put together and feels, and it feels great.

Saw this on GC for a while and was hesitant because of some of the mixed reviews.I have been playing for 45 yrs or so. Out of the box the guitar was in tune which totally suprised me. Its really light, probably the lightestest guitar I have ever owned. The sound is fantastic. I have never been happier with a guitar.Action is great out of the box for a 12. Definite tonal variations between the pickups, but very melodic overall.I love this thing.. Its not a Rick but at 10% of what a Rick costs it works for me. Joe Perry and Jimmy page use the 6 string versions of this model,I can see why. Overall I love the feel of this guitar. Just Buy It!!!

I have aDean Boca 12 string and the Dan 12 string both sound and play beautifully. The Dan is lighter so standing and playing is more comfortable but the Dean's fret board feels better over all for their prices both guitars are great.
