Overview

The 12-String Danelectro 12SDC Electric Guitar captures the jangly sounds of the '60s with a double-cutaway body made of laminated wood and 2 lipstick pickups. Modeled after the classic 59DC used by Jimmy Page, the guitar's "bottle" headstock is elongated to accommodate 12 sealed Gotoh tuners. Its wide neck makes the Danelectro 12 string easy to play. An improved fixed bridge is fully adjustable. The Danelectro 12SDC guitar's '59 vintage look includes details like a matte finish, seal-shaped pickguard, and textured tape binding on the sides.

I was pleasantly surprised with the playability and sound right out of the box. So much jangle I thought the reverb was on. Great job with that. The aluminum nut probably helps. Issues: the switch is junk. A Radio Shack SPDT switch (center off, such as 275-654 with the top clipped) fixed that. The tone cap is way too big. A .100 uf is too dark. I went with a .022, but .047 would be good too. The first fret was low on one side, causing buzzing. Had to pry it up a little. That said, it's a very good playing and sounding instrument, especially given its material makeup. The 12 strings and series wiring help cover the thinness of the pickups. Now if they just made orange an option...

I'm no pro, so take my comments like a grain of sand. I'm looking for a certain tone and sound and this guitar just does not have it for me. it feels cheap, looks a bit cheap and has that tin twang sound. On the flip side, it can produce an interesting sound with effect pedals, but then it's a one trick pony. For me the main thing is the sound.

If you don't have a Rickenbacker....

By Daniel Klementovich

from Lancaster PA

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

You may be disapointed to own this axe. HOWEVER,if you buy this, you will NOT be let down to achieve that Byrds,Led Zep, Tom Petty sound with your favorite pedals. Yes, it is a solid body. Yes it's composite wood.Yes it doesn't have a resounding chamber. But, the neck is straight and the neck is small for no-so-large hands. It plays like a 6 string electric. After extensive shopping online and a long awaited ship date. Iit was worth the hassle and a 6 month wait. You have so much control over the sound through very simple controls.Watch the volume. I recommend this as an inexpensive and good-sounding alternative to a Rick. But, set your sights big. I know I will. Get it in the mean time. But make your sound your own.

    Great axe for the money!

    By doug dickeson

    from Lincoln, NE

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

Pros: Great jangly sound, string changing should be easy (Ricky owners, you know what I'm talking about!) Inexpensive enough that you don't have to worry about it much. By far the easiest electric 12 that I've ever played. Cool retro Dano look. Cons: Neck stability leaves just a bit to be desired. You need to be a bit more careful when playing to not put too much pressure on the neck. Otherwise, it starts to go out of tune. Overall, though? it's less than $400, and a great axe for the money! I'm just blown away by this guitar for what it cost. reminds me of some of my old guitars I had in the 60's and early 70's. great action and feel and fun as all heck to play. why pay 2000 plus dollars for a Rickenbacker.

    Great for the money

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I would have given it 5 stars because the price/value is tremendous. Really a cool guitar with surprisingly good craftsmanship. Maybe I just got unlucky, or it was getting a guitar shipped from the mid-west to Florida in December but my setup out of the box wasn't that great. Mine had way too much neck relief and the action was pretty bad. That being said a truss rod tightening put it back to spot on and now it plays great. As previously reviewed, if you don't want to shell out the big money for a Ricky this really will get you there. Great chimey sound, you will be playing the intro to Ticket To Ride and Wish You Were Here over and over!

Best 12 string, also the cheapest.

    By Nick

    from undisclosed

    Verified Buyer

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

This is my 2nd Danelectro DC-12. My first was a 90's reissue. They're still good, and in my opinion the Danelectro is the best 12 string commercially available and maybe the only one you'll need. It also happens to be one of the cheapest. Pros/Cons:

    - The tone. Match with a Vox or Fender amp and chime for days. If you're getting a bad sound out of this your picks are too thick-try using a thinner pick than you're used to. What I like about it is the higher octave strings get played first when picking downwards, which makes the 12 string chime more pronounced than on models with the strings placed the other way around.

-The wide neck. Not classical-wide, just wide enough to not feel cramped with an extra layer of strings down the neck making it easier to play than many other 12 strings.

-While the construction of a Danelectro is charmingly cheap and a nice alternative to the same old, the chrome plating on the bridge and tuners looks and feels cheap in a bad way. That being said, everything still works and the cheap metal doesn't seem to affect the sound at all so it's hard to argue. Also the bridge is adjustable in ways many other 12 string guitars are not. Each string can be intonated which is awesome. A shame though that a steel replacement doesn't seem to be available.

-It would have been nice for one of the pickups to be reverse wound so that it is hum cancelling in the middle position.

-Neck heavy- normally Danelectros are balanced well but the added weight to the headstock from the 6 additional tuners makes it want to take a dive. Get a strap that has some sort of grip on the shoulder if possible.

-Unless you're handy, factor in the cost of a pro setup to this guitar. Main issue is the nut likes to snag strings while tuning. Will need to either file or lube the slots.

-Textured pickguard on the new reissues feels much cheaper and plasticy than those on the 90s reissues

Overall very happy with this guitar, will enjoy for years.

While there are not a whole lot of 12-string songs out there, the ones that are out there simply don't sound the same on a 6-string. This guitar sounds just great on Beatles songs, the one song by Bon Jovi that I have tried so far, and even Annie's song by John Denver.

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I've always wanted a 12 string electric but in my budget range either the quality and playability wasn't there or the price was out of reach. Until I discovered the Danelectro. I saw the great reviews, and considering Guitar Center's liberal return policy, I thought I'd give it a try. I couldn't be happier (unless I maybe bought a Rickenbacker). I like the retro look, and LOVE the playability and tone! In my very humble opinion it's one of the best guitar values of ANY type.

I've wanted this particular guitar for many years, since another professional guitarist had a Danelectro 12 string electric that I heard him play and I was impressed with the sound, especially considering this is an inexpensive guitar. Years later, I now have this same guitar and remain seriously impressed! And it stays in tune - a relief when you think about constantly tuning 12 strings. I can strongly recommend this guitar.

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar, period. Maybe many buy this because they can't afford a Ric 12 string, but I think this is a beautiful instrument in its own right. The craftsmanship is top notch, I don't care where it was made. Over my 25 years of playing, I've owned plenty of American-made instruments from the likes of Gibson, Martin, Fender, and Guild. This instrument is one of the nicest instruments I've played right up there with those other names, and even better than some of the American-made instruments I've owned.

My only niggle with this instrument is the 1/4 inch jack became intermittent after a few years. I know for the cost, this instrument probably does not have highest quality electronics in it. Not a big deal. I can replace the electronics easily if and when they go bad. The pots still work perfectly and the pickups still sound great. The important thing that I cannot change is the way this instrument is put together and feels, and it feels great.

Saw this on GC for a while and was hesitant because of some of the mixed reviews.I have been playing for 45 yrs or so. Out of the box the guitar was in tune which totally suprised me. Its really light, probably the lightestest guitar I have ever owned. The sound is fantastic. I have never been happier with a guitar.Action is great out of the box for a 12. Definite tonal variations between the pickups, but very melodic overall.I love this thing.. Its not a Rick but at 10% of what a Rick costs it works for me. Joe Perry and Jimmy page use the 6 string versions of this model,I can see why. Overall I love the feel of this guitar. Just Buy It!!!

Our band has been adding a lot of jangly, chimey songs from the 60s, and this guitar does a Great job of providing that sound. Although the materials and workmanship are not top of the line, I give it 5 stars because the value, tone and playability are that good. Good setup and intonation right out of the box, and the play action is smooth and low. Easy fingering - and it really sounds like an electric 12-string you'd hear on Tom Petty recordings and hits from the 60s.
