Overview

The 12-String Danelectro 12SDC Electric Guitar captures the jangly sounds of the '60s with a double-cutaway body made of laminated wood and 2 lipstick pickups. Modeled after the classic 59DC used by Jimmy Page, the guitar's "bottle" headstock is elongated to accommodate 12 sealed Gotoh tuners. Its wide neck makes the Danelectro 12 string easy to play. An improved fixed bridge is fully adjustable. The Danelectro 12SDC guitar's '59 vintage look includes details like a matte finish, seal-shaped pickguard, and textured tape binding on the sides.

You may be disapointed to own this axe. HOWEVER,if you buy this, you will NOT be let down to achieve that Byrds,Led Zep, Tom Petty sound with your favorite pedals. Yes, it is a solid body. Yes it's composite wood.Yes it doesn't have a resounding chamber. But, the neck is straight and the neck is small for no-so-large hands. It plays like a 6 string electric. After extensive shopping online and a long awaited ship date. Iit was worth the hassle and a 6 month wait. You have so much control over the sound through very simple controls.Watch the volume. I recommend this as an inexpensive and good-sounding alternative to a Rick. But, set your sights big. I know I will. Get it in the mean time. But make your sound your own.

This offering appears to be an updated retro-redo of earlier models. It was interesting to learn that a 60s variant (6-string?) was used by Jimmy Page (Led Zep) fame. There are various Youtube contemporary videos of him doing some riffs, of the 6-string.
My experience is playing around with one (a hollow body style). The strange vinyl white tape circling the body halves seems low quality, and if you look inside the hollow body's cut-out, you see flat black paint. The plastic knobs were also lower quality with the toggle switch being somewhat crude - like a home made electronic instrument kit. I have read that these items can be upgraded - leaving the lip stick style pickups intact. (I'd try to keep the look original.)
The neck and frets appeared decent, with the 12 compact tuners aligned on an attractive (headstock )?
I have read (internet) that some folks strongly recommend a "compressor" effects pedal to enhance/correct the "jangle" sound to simulate the Byrds, etc. The sound is very nice unplugged.

Almost ready for prime time!

By Phil

from Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I was pleasantly surprised with the playability and sound right out of the box. So much jangle I thought the reverb was on. Great job with that. The aluminum nut probably helps. Issues: the switch is junk. A Radio Shack SPDT switch (center off, such as 275-654 with the top clipped) fixed that. The tone cap is way too big. A .100 uf is too dark. I went with a .022, but .047 would be good too. The first fret was low on one side, causing buzzing. Had to pry it up a little. That said, it's a very good playing and sounding instrument, especially given its material makeup. The 12 strings and series wiring help cover the thinness of the pickups. Now if they just made orange an option...

to date this is one of the best buys i've made in guitars. this is a wonderful instrument right out of the box. Down side is that the company no longer makes a case for this item. Buying this will enhance anyones guitar collection. I say it's a must buy !

    Great axe for the money!

    By doug dickeson

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

Pros: Great jangly sound, string changing should be easy (Ricky owners, you know what I'm talking about!) Inexpensive enough that you don't have to worry about it much. By far the easiest electric 12 that I've ever played. Cool retro Dano look. Cons: Neck stability leaves just a bit to be desired. You need to be a bit more careful when playing to not put too much pressure on the neck. Otherwise, it starts to go out of tune. Overall, though? it's less than $400, and a great axe for the money! I have aDean Boca 12 string and the Dan 12 string both sound and play beautifully. The Dan is lighter so standing and playing is more comfortable but the Dean's fret board feels better over all for their prices both guitars are great.

    Great for the money

    About Me Professional Musician

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I would have given it 5 stars because the price/value is tremendous. Really a cool guitar with surprisingly good craftsmanship. Maybe I just got unlucky, or it was getting a guitar shipped from the mid-west to Florida in December but my setup out of the box wasn't that great. Mine had way too much neck relief and the action was pretty bad. That being said a truss rod tightening put it back to spot on and now it plays great. As previously reviewed, if you don't want to shell out the big money for a Ricky this really will get you there. Great chimey sound, you will be playing the intro to Ticket To Ride and Wish You Were Here over and over!

Best 12 string, also the cheapest.

    By Nick

    from undisclosed

    Verified Buyer

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

This is my 2nd Danelectro DC-12. My first was a 90's reissue. They're still good, and in my opinion the Danelectro is the best 12 string commercially available and maybe the only one you'll need. It also happens to be one of the cheapest. Pros/Cons:

    - The tone. Match with a Vox or Fender amp and chime for days. If you're getting a bad sound out of this your picks are too thick-try using a thinner pick than you're used to. What I like about it is the higher octave strings get played first when picking downwards, which makes the 12 string chime more pronounced than on models with the strings placed the other way around.

-The wide neck. Not classical-wide, just wide enough to not feel cramped with an extra layer of strings down the neck making it easier to play than many other 12 strings.

-While the construction of a Danelectro is charmingly cheap and a nice alternative to the same old, the chrome plating on the bridge and tuners looks and feels cheap in a bad way. That being said, everything still works and the cheap metal doesn't seem to affect the sound at all so it's hard to argue. Also the bridge is adjustable in ways many other 12 string guitars are not. Each string can be intonated which is awesome. A shame though that a steel replacement doesn't seem to be available.

-It would have been nice for one of the pickups to be reverse wound so that it is hum cancelling in the middle position.

-Neck heavy- normally Danelectros are balanced well but the added weight to the headstock from the 6 additional tuners makes it want to take a dive. Get a strap that has some sort of grip on the shoulder if possible.

-Unless you're handy, factor in the cost of a pro setup to this guitar. Main issue is the nut likes to snag strings while tuning. Will need to either file or lube the slots.

-Textured pickguard on the new reissues feels much cheaper and plasticy than those on the 90s reissues

Overall very happy with this guitar, will enjoy for years.
