Look elsewhere...
If Boss pedals are built like tanks, Danelectros are built like Ford Pin. The first day I bought this, I was adjusting the knobs, and I heard something funny...kinda like the radio. I found that if I touched the metal switch, I could actually make out what they were saying on a local station. This thing is made of plastic, so NO SHIELDING whatsoever. Plus, it sounds really terrible. Heck, even Danelectro makes much better pedals, like their regular overdrive. For $40, your money is best spent on a different pedal.

A wonderful sounding octave fuzz
The fuzz from the French Toast is fantastic. I was shooting for the fuzz tone in George Harrison's "What Is Life?" and this gets me much closer than most pedals in the same price range (I went through an Ibanez FZ-7 and a DOD Flashback Fuzz, but neither sounded very natural, or good, to me). I don't use the octave effect much, not because it doesn't sound good, which it does, but because I don't have as much use for it. Every once in a while I'll flip it on to give a little edginess to my solos (although I wish they'd given it a more robust switch so I wouldn't have to worry about breaking it when I try to switch it with my foot). Construction could be better; the housing and footswitch both don't seem like they'll take a lot of abuse, and it would be really nice to have an LED, but overall I really can't complain about it. As with most of the other Mini series pedals, I think Danelectro really got this one right.

Yeah!!!
This danelectro octaver/fuzz pedal is awesome! It can give you a wide range of sounds many of which are reminiscent of the music of Jimi Hendrix, it can also give you very different fuzz sounds to make all your own. It is a very cool pedal and not very expensive, it is next on my to buy list.

Muddy sound
I own several Danelectro effects pedals, and I have been impressed with the others. The French Toast Octave Distortion was not that impressive, however. The distortion lacks the drive that I like and you can hardly hear the octave in the mix. It mostly just sounds like a muddy distortion. If you are looking for an octave/distortion mix, buy the Danelectro Chili Dog Octave pedal and mix it with a good distortion pedal. This is definitely not Danelectro's best pedal.
