This thing is a BOSS.

Comments about DW Performance Series Steel Snare Drum:

I picked up a 14 x 6.5 and it sounds absolutely KILLER. This snare has a huge tuning range depending on your style of play and desired sound. I swapped out my batter head for a Remo Black X. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Comments about DW Performance Series Steel Snare Drum:

This drum deserves all 5 stars. I got the 14"x8" and its very solid and well constructed piece of art. Very dynamic and sensitive but with big power when needed. Thinner metal snare drums are not supposed to be cranked to the max, they're designed to give you a wider range in the lower to mid tension but can be snugged up if necessary. This snare sure does shine right in between loose and medium tension and has great body. I own 3 different DW snares and this one is just as good as any. Very underrated drum.

I do alaot of snare work, precise and quick, this picks up every touch and is loud enough without having to hammer it. Rim shots are a perfect crack without having to tune loose. Love it. NOw this is on the 14x8

Comments about DW Performance Series Steel Snare Drum:

Great snare for the kind of music I play. Being in a punk band, I wanted something I could tune higher, but still be loud and sensitive. This snare does the trick.

One small problem, which doesn't bother me because of the sound I like out of my snare, is the fact that it only sounds good to me tuned high. If you want a fat snare sound, I would recommend a wood snare.

I also wouldn't recommend this snare for jazz because it's really loud and it rings out for a long time. If you don't like a lot of ringing, a moongel or piece of tape on the resonant head does the trick.

I recently did a gig in a small venue, and the snare cut through everything very nicely. I also got a few compliments specifically about the snare sound after the gig.

Overall, great snare for my taste. Just keep in mind it isn't very versatile and it's REALLY loud.

Comments about DW Performance Series Steel Snare Drum:

I upgraded to this snare from my PDP Platinum snare drum. The Platinum snare was decent but just didn't have the tone I was looking for, had a bland ordinary sound, and made noise when I hit the tom closest to it (from the snare itself). As soon as I started playing the DW I was blown away! It has a tone I didn't expect from a steel drum, and no snare vibration issues. I don't typically focus on my snare drum other than keep a beat and hitting it when I crash cymbals, but with this drum I find myself focusing on it as much as I do with my toms. It's actually changing my approach to drumming to an extent. And my interest in playing just got a shot in the arm. High quality stuff with an amazing sound always gives you more motivation to play. This drum did that for me.

        Great DW, but limited functionality

        By Liam Manley

        from Corvallis, Oregon

Comments about DW Performance Series Steel Snare Drum:

This DW is a great buy for the price, but the tuning of the drum is limited. I have always been a promoter for DW, and they really hit it off with the performance series! My only complaint is that it is really only meant for a looser-type snare sound. It sounds great low, but Preferably I like a pretty hot, tight snare, so when I corked it up it choked way too fast for me. If you like loose snare sounds, go for it, but if like a more "well-rounded" snare, got for the wood snare performance series. They sound wonderful and have a not-so-terrible price tag!
