Overview

No detail has been overlooked. No corners cut. Its look and sound are custom-inspired. Its value difficult to match. To its makers, the Performance Series exemplifies what it means to be handcrafted by DW. In addition to advanced HVX shell technology devised and constructed by John Good and the DW Custom Shop team in in the USA at their Oxnard, California shop, this Performance Series 5-piece kit is fitted with quarter turret lugs, low mass die-cast claw hooks, and finished in a gorgeous pewter sparkle framed by chrome hardware.

The HVX shells used on the Performance Series combine advanced grain orientation technology and hand-selected North American hard rock maple to deliver a low, punchy fundamental, with ample resonance and projection that's perfectly suited for live applications.

I purchased this kit in Pewter Sparkle from the sister web company last December, and have had a fair amount of time to get comfortable with it. I also added a 16X14 floor tom, which I ordered separately, and was shipped the wrong color by another dealer. At the time no dealer had the large, Pewter Sparkle floor tom in stock, and after a call and email to DW customer service, they sent a brand new drum out in three days, along with a call tag and shipping label for return of the miscoded/labeled tom I had purchased! I have not seen anything like that level of support from Gretsch, which I played for almost 10 years before, and especially Pearl, whose products I played for nearly 15 years, and had returned different drums under warranty to Nashville for finish peeling four different times. There is a reason so many top level pro and touring drummers play DW, whom I fondly remember from the days of CAMCO in the 1960's and 1970's when I played Slingerland and Rogers. I see absolutely no tuning stability/drift difference between these mini lugs and the larger Collectors Series hardware. The roundness of tone, projection, and punchy-ness at different tunings and tensions speaks well to the shell design and materials, and creates a very versatile kit for many different styles of music. I was tempted to wait the two months for one of the new Gretsch USA-made Brooklyn kits, but after auditioning and looking over these DW's, I couldn't see there would be any advantage, especially since all of my hardware, pedals, and throne are already DW and PDP 900 Series, which are what you want to support those smaller toms and ride/crash cymbals over your bass drum. On stage and under lights, the silver sparkle over black background which forms the Pewter Sparkle finish wrap is as striking and elegant to look at as it is to play and listen to. I seriously doubt I will look at or play another brand in the future; no more imported/unknown origin in my drum shells. While certainly more of an investment than some of the top import kits, this Performance Series is worth every penny and deserves your consideration, regardless of what you think you want to spend on a drum kit and/or your level of proficiency.

Very bad...
I bought these as a spare to my 5 other giging kits. I work with several touring bands. I played 250 shows last year and recorded 5 studio albums. They're a basic drum kit you hit with sticks.

DW couldn't give me free drums if they wanted too now. See quality issues below.
First off... the bearing edges had nicks in them straight from manufacturer. I had to have them recut by the local drum shop. The stock edges are horrible and make the drums untunable even with nicks. A single 45 edge sucks. The local guy put a rounder edge on to get all the ringing out. The finish was OK... the bass hoops had basically no finish on them... I still cannot tell if the hoops are raw wood or have any finish on them.

The lugs look OK but the plating is all brownish around the edges. I think they nickel plated them but the chrome doesn't cover the entire lug. Weird brownish spots??? and it's chipping off. I got a chrome sliver from them. Ouch!!
Expensive drums that sound bad and need new edges are not a good value. I'd give them a 0.

I picked up 2 of these kits when I was in the market for a new drum kit. These drums sing right out of the box and sounded even better once I changed out the heads to remo clear emperers over clear ambassadors over the toms and a PS3 on the kick drum. You can tune these drums all over the place and they sound fantastic. These drums destroy the competition in their price point and are a fine investment no matter what kind of music you play. I got the tobacco stain and a Ginger Glass wrapped kit. Love these drums

Pictures don't do this drum kit justice. The gunmetal grey metallic finish looks amazing. The DW turret lugs and badges are unmatched in coolness by any other brand. And DW is an American company, which gives me even more pride in my owning them.

Comments about DW Performance Series 5-Piece Shell Pack:

I decided first I would upgrade some hardware on my vintage set. That was a slippery slope. Once I got started with a new DW throne, I couldn't stop! Hi-hats and Cymbal stands were next. Tons of great stuff. DW all the way except a good buy in a used Gibralter bass drum pedal at my local GC. Once I finished most all hardware and cymbal upgrades/additions, the next logical step was a new shell pack. Oh so tempted by the Collector Black Satin. But I decided the Performance HVX would be enough for me after I was able to hit the drums and loved the tone. So, I ordered black diamond from another store and never looked back. Love my drums, totally awesome!!! Superb quality throughout the set. Secure locks on all hardware is a great feature though not part of the shell pack of course. Freaking awesome look and feel! I went with the cymbal stand mount above bass drum tom tom mounts. Worked out great with 5700 and 9000 boom cymbal stands. Totally satisfied!

Comments about DW Performance Series 5-Piece Shell Pack:

I have been playing professionally for over 35 and have played most manufacturers drums. I was originally going to purchase a DW classic series set. I decided that I wanted to do a side by side comparison of the Classic and the Performance series. There are some considerable differences in style but the tonal quality between the two was not remarkable. As a matter of fact I could not tell the difference. DW has crafted an outstanding line of affordable drums that meet my specifications as a pro drum kit. I purchased the Performance Series 5 piece Ebony Stain Lacquer (American Hard Rock Maple) with Chrome Hardware. 10" 12" mounted Toms 14" 16" Floor Toms. I purchased the DW Super Rack with Side Arm, DW 9000 HiHat, DW 9000 Double Kick, DW 9000 Snare Stand and and 2 more DW cymbal arms to add to the already two that came with the rack. The drums out of the box sounded good. I change the heads to to remo pinstripes and tuned them to my liking and they really have excellent tone, projection, punch and depth! The craftsmanship is outstanding! The finish is flawless! There is no detail that DW has left out on this kit. In the studio or live this set really has the punch that I have been looking for! As for the hardware and the Super Rack, goes it is hands down the best set-up I have ever had. Memory locks for every adjustment imaginable. Ease of use is phenomenal. Do yourself a favor if you are into getting a new set. These drum are not inexpensive but they are a serious mid level professional DW drum set. Make no mistake about it. DW did not cut corner with the quality of this sets. This Performance Series drum set far exceeded my expectation. Once your peers see and hear this set, they will be in awe!

I own the 5-piece in cherry stain. This is the best drum kit for the price on the market today. DW has the best overall reputation of any drum company out there. John Good truly is the wood whisperer. There is no other company out there that can give you 100% North American Hard Rock Maple, with these finishes, this build quality, these features, and the mind-blowing sound for anything near this price. DW has hit the nail on the head with these drums. They fill a huge gap in the market and if you are looking for a professional level kit for intermediate money, these are for you. Do yourself a favor and get a set. now.

Comments about DW Performance Series 5-Piece Shell Pack:

I have been touring now for about four years and have recorded albums since I was 16 years old. I am endorsed by TRX cymbals and play around 200 shows a year NOT INCLUDING anything I do with my church when I am not on the road.

I have had these drums for about 3 months now. I have used them in about 30 shows so far and I can not complain for the most part. I have been touring with both a Christian band and a Country band for the past few months. This set delivers in both cases!

Pros: Great tone especially in the toms, Kick when mic'd well is very nice, good tick to it with a nice amount of punch (I use a Shure BETA 52) and the toms accent well and cut. The floor toms tend to ring REAL good when you first break them out and slap heads on, so it will take some tweaking. Finishes are beautiful, I have the Pewter Sparkle. Looks PHENOMENAL under lights on a stage.

Cons: Don't have a whole lot of them to be honest. The ring goes erck me a little but I use in-ears and don't hear it a lot. Kick isnt deep and dark, but if you mic it on regular basis it isnt much of a problem.

Now for reference, I do own and tour with an Orange County Custom kit (not pre-made series kit, but truly custom) and also have had high end Pearl kits (MCX, and Masters). I love this kit over all of them!

14' Snare - Cracks and cuts but also has good sounds for snare work and rolls

10' Tom - Nice and punchy with good tone
12' Tom - Takes time to tune but sounds good
14' Tom - Good low end but enough resonant to make a difference
16' Tom - Sorta flat sounding but does its job

                  22' Kick - Sounds wonderful!

I use Remo Emperor Clear on my toms, Aquarian Superkick 10 batter, Evans EQ3 on front of kick. Evans Genera Dry on snare, Evans Hazy on bottom of snare.
