i just replaced all my cymbal stands with the DW 9700s because they are built like a rock, have infinite adjustability, awesome memory locks, and (my favorite) adjustable cymbal seating. This can greatly increase the longevity of your cymbals because it lets YOU determine how freely the cymbal moves on the stand. For instance, I lay into my crashes and chinas pretty hard so I keep those on the looser side so they move freely when struck while still never EVER coming off the stand. I keep my ride on the tighter side because I usually am only hitting the top of the cymbal and the bell so I want it to be consistantly in the same place. I bought one of these and knew I'd never buy another kind of stand again, I eventually bought 4 more so I have 5 in my setup. They pack up and set up very quickly easily. DW even includes numbered sticker markings so when you take them apart to travel you know what part goes to which stand, and with the memory locks in place you just slide the piece in and tighten. Cuts down 8-10 minutes of my setup time at shows. One of the best equipment purchases I've ever made, hands down.
This stand is almost flawless! It is definately heavy-duty and durable. You won't knock it over, it has memory locks for every adjustment, and it has the DW name and reputation. The only problem can be a big one. The handle for adjusting cymbal pitch/angle is made of plastic. I'm probably like most drummers, where I go from gig to gig and can't afford custom cases. I put all of my hardware in one bag, and these handles break very easily. Then when you get to the gig you can't adjust your stand with a broken handle. I have learned to carry extra parts now, but they cost $6 each, and that can add up. I would recommend using the 5000 series stuff.
I've had two 9702 DW multiple cymbal stands for about 5 years now and they've held up beautifully. And that's why it was a no-brainer to buy the 9700 recently. When I first bought the 9702's, I couldn't get past the fact that they were HEAVY. So at one point, I purchased a couple of medium-weight PDP stands thinking they'd be easier to lug around. And they were, but they just weren't rugged enough, and I retired them in less than a year. The 9700 series DW stands on the other hand are beautifully made. My 5-year old 9702's still work and look like new. I gig once or twice a month and lug them to rehearsals once or twice a week. No pitted or peeling chrome, no wear other than a few scratches, no failures of any kind. They have been very durable, and they are very stable. I expect the same out of the 9700. I like the infinitely-adjustable tilters and black-plastic release handles. I've read that other drummer have had these handles break, but I've had no trouble with them at all. I like that I they allow me to instantly fine-tune my setup. The 9700 series DW stands are expensive -- the 9700 cost almost three times as much as the one of the pdp's mentioned above, the 9702's, four times as much. But for me, they're worth it. I don't think I'll ever have to replace any of them. They are top-notch.
