Advanced black coating for EXTRA-Life and Protection.

DR's EXTRA-Life strings offer bass players a superior black coated string without sacrificing the crisp tone, clarity, and volume of traditional DR HandMade Strings. EXTRA-Life has a super thin advanced .0003" black coating on the plain strings and on the wrap wire, the thinnest coating DR knows of.

  • DR Bass strings black coated 40- 100

As reviewed by joseph devito on 7/11/2009

I've used just about every string on the market and these strings have great tone for funk, jazz, rock, etc. The coating and/or the way they are wrapped gives warm, rich, low mids, and clarity to say the least. Excellent for recording.

  • Even worse than despicable!

As reviewed by Spencer T. on 6/3/2011

I have heard critics revel in the reliability of DR strings for quite some time. But, from my understanding (and personal experience); they are anything but reliable- Nor is their quality any better. I was onstage playing seek and destroy by Metallica with my Ibanez SR400QM (which I no longer own), and the E string for my set of 'black beauties' unraveled while I was playing. I thought that the set was pretty good looking on top of the purple finish of my bass; but the colored coating of these strings is clearly the ONLY good feature about them. In fact, The string did not happen to break in a usual manner... it was so poorly made that it literally untwisted itself while I was onstage. So, as I'm sure you can imagine: I was pretty Pissed. Additionally, the tone these strings produce isn't attractive. The description defines the strings as having "crisp tone, clarity, and volume". And yet, I didn't experience any of this. The tone sounded muted and dull, and the clarity was muddy, at best. What are the positives though? Well... the color on the strings didn't fray for as long as I used them. These are the type of strings for the type of artist that buys a signature edition guitar, and then lets it sit in a corner and never be played. These strings look good... but that is ALL that they are good for. Don't waste your money on these pieces of crap; because the price is a criminal price for such a useless set of strings. You know what's really funny, though? A six string set of Ernie Ball strings is actually CHEAPER... and there's even more strings with far better quality in the package. Ha. If I could; I'd spit on this product. It's a disgrace.

  • Feel Great

As reviewed by Jim Butler on 4/7/2009

I put these on my Geddy Jazz bass, my main axe. They sound great and feel really good. I am a finger player and my hands feel great after a 4 hour gig. I was using string dressing on my last set of strings but not needed on these. They look very cool on the black and white jazz. I was concerned about an insert in the package stating that the color may wear off in the picking area of the strings. I have used these on 2 gigs and have not seen any loss of color anywhere on them. yet. I hope that does not happen because it would make them look terrible.
