The limited edition D'Angelico Master Builder 1942 Excel is the first reissue in the Master Builder Series. To ensure the accuracy of the reproduction, an original 1942 Excel was put through an MRI machine in which two- and three-dimensional images were created and sent to master luthier Gene Baker. Featuring AAA European maple back and sides, a European spruce top, and a single-piece European maple neck with an ebony fingerboard, the non-cutaway 18" USA 1942 Master Builder Excel symbolizes the pinnacle of craftsmanship and captures the majestic D'Angelico tone coveted for decades by archtop enthusiasts.
The exquisite instrument offers a broad yet perfectly balanced tonal spectrum with a deep bass response and a crisp high end-harmonically-rich chords ring with a piano-like clarity and single-note runs are amazingly articulate yet warm. The floating Lollar Johnny Smith neck pickup with one volume and one tone pot mounted on the pickguard allows it to be used in any live situation from a duo to a full-fledged big band. True to the D'Angelico spirit, the USA 1942 Master Builder Excel is adorned with all of the accoutrements of its iconic predecessors including the signature stairstep pickguard and tailpiece, distinctive headstock with a mother-of-pearl Excel inlay, and mother-of-pearl square block split inlays. Some modern touches have been added such as a truss rod with a distinct Art Deco truss rod cover, and Gold Grover Super Rotomatic tuners.
