Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1A Acoustic-Electric Archtop Guitar:
I have a LOT of guitars covering most manufacturers and most types, many of them handcrafted or top-of-the-line models from luthiers in the USA and Japan. I was shocked at the incredible quality and craftsmanship of this guitar, built in Incheon, Korea. It is equal to, or surpasses the best, and far more expensive, guitars I own. The attention to detail is obvious and there isn't a single flaw in any category. The set-up was perfect out of the box, and the frets are highly polished, and the intonation is also perfect. I lowered the action on the treble side, maybe 1 millimeter to suit my style, but even that was painless with the strings under full tension.
The tone is very "sweet" with even volume across the Fretboard. The guitar is plenty loud and rich sounding without an amp. At home, I rarely plug in in - it's just beautiful acoustically. Plugged into my Roland amp, it's as warm or bright as you want, and you can have as much of an acoustic sound as you like. The overtones from the large unobstructed chamber are really complex and pleasing. Of course, if you want that Joe Pass or Jim Hall sound, you can easily get there using the tone knob on the pick guard. Oh, and speaking of the pick guard (and I don't often), it is beautifully and flawlessly finished off at the edges adding to the guitar's appeal. Running directly into my console, the guitar is quiet and the signal is strong and clear - perfect for VST amps and effects inside my DAW.
All of the hardware is solid and expertly installed. I have bought $3,000+ instruments that have the tuning machines slightly out of alignment, but these are attractive and perfect. All of the binding and inlay are absolutely perfect with no mismatches at the joins, and no noticeable filler - everything just fits perfectly.
It's no surprise that I rate this instrument as highly as allowed and would recommend this to anyone who wants a beautiful sounding and beautifully made archtop.
