This experience at Guitar Center was a very good experience. I got a lot of money for the instrument I was trading in, so it was easy for me trade up,

Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Referring to the two negatives above: On the bridge side (as opposed to neck side) of the pickup, no matter how you look at or illuminate the underside of the pickup, there is something blocking the light; that it's not exactly, totally floating. I believe it's the pickup mounting bracket under the pickguard. I picked mine up at G Center and noticed this. 2 others in store had very same non-clearance..Not yet determining this as to being detrimental, but I have another smaller archtop of a different make and its pickup is very much floating..Other thing which do I see on all the others including GCenter ads for it, is a slot of missing neck wood about 1.25" long, about 5/16ths" wide and 3/32" deep exactly at end of fingerboard where a pickup mounting-bracket would be if this pickup were instead mounted this way. This is not important. I believe it's there for other models with same size neck but a different pickup bracket. OR, perhaps they tooled all these necks for a side-bracket, but later on changed to a different pickup...

Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great value. It has a beautiful acoustic sound and sounds great through my Fender Deluxe Reverb. I am used to playing Taylor acoustics and found the neck on the EXL-1 very comfortable for my average size hands. The finish is excellent. My local GC did not have one in stock and I had the guitar shipped to the store. I asked for the guitar tech to check it out, do any needed set up and change the strings to flats. It was ready when I arrived and was a joy to play. The guitar comes with a high quality case. If you are into jazz and looking for great value check it out.

      Phenominal Value

Opened the box at Guitar Center.

Tuned and intonation perfect out of the box!

Case included which is added value.

Action like a Ferrari-fast. Beautiful instrument. Compared to $10K for an L-5 how can you go wrong here?

I own a L-5, Epiphone Joe Pass Pro, and Ibanez AF-1. This Guitar already a favorite.

Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have played guitar for fifty years and during that time I've just about every type and brand of guitar out there. I play almost exclusively jazz and currently own a Gibson, ES 175, Gretsch 6120, The Loar 650LH, and my new D'Angelico EXL 1. I can state unequivocally that my D'Angelico is the superior instrument in virtually every category. If you play jazz, or want to learn jazz, you can't go wrong with an EXL 1. I just wish I had bought one earlier.

If you are serious about Jazz, this is it.

Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for many years, mostly acoustic and besides this guitar, I own an Ovation Custom Balladeer and a Gibson J45. Both of these are great acoustics, however I wanted to get serious about playing jazz. I spent a lot of time doing research, looking at mostly guitars that cost much more than this one. My instructor has a deep background and is a Berkley grad, helped me navigate the waters. His basic criteria was to look for a floating pickup with as little, or preferably nothing mounted to the top of the guitar. That really narrowed down the search to basically this company, and a couple of others. The D'angelico was the least known to me but it was the one he recommended having played one of the originals, he felt it was the finest archtop he ever played. I talked to my sales person at Guitar Center who I have had a great experience with and he also said that it was a top of the line guitar, so I took a chance on it even though it was in the low end of the range of $ I was willing to spend. Wow am I glad I did. I have owned it now for 6 months and literally can not say enough about it. It sounds great plugged in, but the acoustic abilities completely took me by surprised. It doesn't have the bellowing sound of my J45, but the sound it does put out is absolutely beautiful. I did have to have it set up, and I have no idea why they ship it without flat wound strings but they did, so I put some quality flats on it. The fit and finish on the guitar is second to none I have ever held, the neck is thinner than my Gibson and easier to swing some of the stretch jazz chords. I could go on, but bottom line is, there is nothing bad to say about this guitar. You will not be disappointed.

      D'Angelico EXL-1 one honey of a guitar

      By MARK SIET

      from San Clemente CA

Comments about D'Angelico EXL-1 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Right out of the box this is a sweet instrument, a honey of a guitar. It comes with 12 gauge high E which is a little bit of a heavy feel for me though others might like it. I switched the strings to a 010 E through 046 low E set of D'Angelica Hot Jazz Strings. I also reset the movable wooden bridge slightly to bring the intonation in line. The action was perfect no setup needed here although some might adjust the truss rod depending on how their guitar comes to them. My experience is that I received one of these in Sunburst previously which I sent back (great Customer Service at Guitar Center) because the pickup kept cutting out. No problems with the one I have now the Natural Color which is what I wanted originally but they were out of stock. Pros: I like the thicker neck it makes chord leads very playable and it is perfect for comping as well. I gig a lot so this baby has been put through its paces recently and performed very well. The workmanship on this guitar is incredible, the finish supreme and the pickup is performing great so my worries there are over. It sounds great acoustically very full and resonant. Amplified through my JazzKat Amp it is the 'Jazz" sound I've been looking for. Cons: I would have said they need better quality control with their pickups due to my previous experience but other than that I think they nailed the design in this perhaps second run. I own another D'Angelico a DP-1 which is a discontinued model, the neck is thinner but same D'Angelico thunk which is the characteristic Jazz tone I kept trying to find. I have tried others Gibson Herb Ellis, L150, Heritage, Ibanez Artcore, etc. but none match up to the pure tone of a D'Angelico. For the price this is an amazing guitar which IMHO beats several of the other brands high priced models!
