Comments about D'Angelico EX Bass Guitar:

I was attracted initially by the shorter scale, as I have been buying shorter scale basses due to tendonitis in the left hand affecting my use of my long scale Fenders, etc. The next factor that impressed me: TONE. You have to hear the beautiful, organic, woody tones of this instrument. I also have a Guild Starfire II and Gretsch G5442 BDC, which are excellent basses but are far surpassed by the D'Angelico. The third factor is the sheer beauty of the instruments. I bought two, a fretted one in white (magnificent to look at). The white finish really shows off all the gold-tone metal on the bass. I also bought an unfretted bass in black, also gorgeous. I was looking at Fretless basses and when a hollow body came on the market, of this caliber, I could not resist. Through a good amp it sounds like an upright. I thought I'd have trouble adjusting, but the positions are well denoted on the top of the neck, so it's not difficult to play in tune, If you have been hankering for a fretless, go with the D'Angelico for sure. The tones far surpass what you get on the comparably priced Fender Precision Tony Franklin model, which is a great bass, but can't give you the organic, mellow woody tones you only get from a hollow body bass. Try them both and you will more than likely go with the D'Angelico. It's great that a forward thinking company has resurrected the D'Angelico heritage and produced super-- but affordable-- world class instruments.
