Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

I was attracted initially by the shorter scale, as I have been buying shorter scale basses due to tendonitis in the left hand affecting my use of my long scale Fenders, etc. The next factor that impressed me: TONE. You have to hear the beautiful, organic, woody tones of this instrument. I also have a Guild Starfire II and Gretsch G5442 BDC, which are excellent basses but are far surpassed by the D'Angelico. The third factor is the sheer beauty of the instruments. I bought two, a fretted one in white (magnificent to look at). The white finish really shows off all the gold-tone metal on the bass. I also bought an unfretted bass in black, also gorgeous. I was looking at Fretless basses and when a hollow body came on the market, of this caliber, I could not resist. Through a good amp it sounds like an upright. I thought I'd have trouble adjusting, but the positions are well denoted on the top of the neck, so it's not difficult to play in tune, If you have been hankering for a fretless, go with the D'Angelico for sure. The tones far surpass what you get on the comparably priced Fender Precision Tony Franklin model, which is a great bass, but can't give you the organic, mellow woody tones you only get from a hollow body bass. Try them both and you will more than likely go with the D'Angelico. It's great that a forward thinking company has resurrected the D'Angelico heritage and produced super-- but affordable-- world class instruments.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

I had every intention of buying a good gigging "classic rock retro style bass" that I could gig regularly with without taking out my vintage Fender or Gibson basses. Was thinking of a lower end Fender or Gibson to keep the retro vibe. I played a few of the Fender Jazz Basses on the store wall but they didn't speak to me like my vintage one does. I played a Gibson LP bass but it felt too "baseball batish". The Gibson SG (EBO style) basses were Ok but it felt a bit too much like a toy. Is it me? Or do the American made Fenders and Gibsons seem overpriced for what you are getting? I then started checking some of the import basses. Ibanez had a hollowbody that was vintage looking but it felt pretty empty and dead. Then I started checking out this D'Angelico hollow body Excel bass. First impression was how snazzy it looked! Lol. With the intricate headstock and flamed maple. Then when playing it, the neck felt fantastic. It is fairly thin and comfortable much like my vintage P bass. I always found my Jazz bass much too narrow at the nut. The playability is fantastic. At the store, I asked them if they could adjust the truss rod slightly and they abliged. I have had the bass now for about 3 months and haven't needed an adjustment since. Stability! The bass has a nice tone to it unplugged without feeling plasticky. The pickups sound great allowing you to get a good woody P-bass vibe from the neck pickup and a nice focused sound from the bridge pickup as you would expect but a bit rounder. Overall, this bass has a deceptive amount of punch to it making it suitable for even heavier rock. This is a very versatile bass in a lot of ways. The pickups have great output and records very well. No noise issues at all. I really can't say enough good things about this bass and how satisfied I am with it. And you should hear the reactions when people see it! The chicks dig it!!!!!!
I went to the store with the intention of buying a Fender or a Gibson And proudly left with a D'Angelico!
