I've had mine for a few months now, and bends that once seemed impossible are are a piece of cake. This cool little device comes with chart showing different hand exercises to improve certain aspects of your playing. I started with the picking hand endurance stretch. Now I can downpick through a whole song, say "Master of Puppets". However, I find that the callus builder surface only does a good job of maintaining calluses, rather than forming them.

I have had mine for a little over a month and at first it was good. I did notice increased hand strength and finger speed. However after using it for a bit, the plastic shafts of the fingers started to develop grooves in them and now it has a tendency to bind up and is no longer smooth and fluid moving. You expect things that are used to wear out but not in a months time. I gave it 3 stars because it was good at first. I have just ordered the grip master though.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

I use it in my ongoing rehab/strengthening of my left hand. (Due to cervical pinched nerve causing me to lose strength and unable to play.) I keep it by the recliner and work it while watching news, etc. It is handy and-at least in my case- I do believe it to be beneficial.

I use this to build up really weak left hand for playing guitar, mainly ring and little finger but it works for hand, wrist and forearm. Was surprised by workout it provides and in 2 days can notice improvement. It is just what I needed.I am 60 years old now and just starting to play and I wish I would have been using this for last 5 years!

      Really works my fingers

      Comments about Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

I use it whenever I can fit it in. It really shows me that I have a weak left pinky, and a not-so-strong ring finger. After two days of use, I am already seeing increased strength in these fingers. In a month or so, I think I will notice improved playing ability. I also use it to strengthen my right hand. The adjustable tension for each finger is a huge plus. I would recommend this tool for anyone wanting to increase their finger strength.

Gets sticky after a month or two use

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

After two months of use. The shafts showed signs of scuffing. I took the exceriser apart and sprayed a light coat of silicon oil on the shafts. I wiped off excess oil and re assembled it, the excerciser has been easy to use for many months now.

Great when you're not near your guitar

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

I was traveling recently and for over three weeks wasn't near my guitar during the entire time. This handy little guy kept my fretting hand in shape and even helped maintain my callouses. The individual finger levers are independently adjustable to accommodate varying finger strengths and if you take off the light grey part, you'll find built in ridges that can take the place of strings to keep your callouses in playing shape as you squeeze it. If I hadn't taken this with me on my trip, it would have taken a couple weeks and a great deal of pain to get my fingers back into playing shape. It's even small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.

      Great useful product

      By Max Weiner

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

So I am a 15 year old and I have been playing guitar for about 4 or 5 years. I would say I am pretty good at guitar. Recently I have seriously started learning how to shred and solo faster. I have had the hand exerciser for two days now and I already notice a difference. Also my younger brother who has had trouble playing has been using this and it has really helped him. I love everything about the hand exceriser except for one thing. The only thing is that after a while it kind of hurts. I don't know if it is because my hands are a little to small or because I have been using it for the whole day the past two days. Over all I love the hand exceriser. It is comfortable, helpful, and it is fun. Another thing: I know this is not the primary use, but I have been trying to break the habit of cracking my fingers for a while and now after two days of using this I have already broken this habit.

      Works Magic

      By Rick Laitinen

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

This little thing works wonders!!!! Greatly improved playability along the fretboard. Much faster finger picking in only 2 weeks of daily use. the ability to increase or decrease tension to target specific fingers is an absolute must. Also the callus builder function is fantastic and does the job superbly. I don't go anywhere without this thing!!! Its an absolute MUST for any guitarist whether seasoned or just starting. Thank You GC!!!!

This is a great device to build finger strength. The spring tension on each finger can be individually adjusted.

      Great for Drummers, too!

      By Chris Smalley

      from Louisville, Kentucky

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

Being the drummer in an extreme metal band is hard. Particularly hard when, for instance, your guitarists insist on you learning to play like a cross between Gene Hoglan and the guy from Cattle Decapitation. So when I decided to kick my playing up a notch, I thought of ways to build strength and endurance. A finger trainer was the obvious choice. Planet Waves has always made a fine product (we use PW brand instrument cables all around), and when I saw just how sophisticated this device was I knew it was the one I wanted. The adjustable individual spring tension is great for when your finger strength is offset. After about a week of use I've already gotten it to the point where all the springs are adjusted evenly. Plenty of people have noticed the distinct addition of muscle tone in my hands & forearms. This thing - along with solid, constant practice - will get your arms ROCK solid after even just short term use! Even the simulated strings come in handy for drummers. My palms are getting calloused up pretty well, which offers extra padding for when I get those really hard snaps to throw in accents and such. There's no real set regimen for using one of these, but you don't really need one. I keep it in my pocket throughout the day and if I'm at work or somewhere and I've got some down time, I take out my PW exerciser and just squeeze it until my hand starts to cramp. Switch hands and do the same thing again. Repeat for as long as you want. If you go all day like that, as much as you can, I guarantee you that inside of two weeks you'll have forearms like Popeye! If you buy one piece of training equipment for yourself or need an inexpensive, but VERY effective, gift for that special musician in your life I'm telling you, you just CAN'T miss with this device!
