Good Stuff

By ExplorerBoy97

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I like the Gotohs and Sperzals I have and decided to give these a try on Peavey I own. Nice tuners. They are easy to install, but a tad bit tricky to get the cut feature to behave at first - not a big deal to get over. The 18-1 ratio is nice. I'm not sure these hold a tune better than my other tuners, but since I don't use trem, I can't really offer an opion on that.

very nice

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

very nice locking tuners....i havent noticed much of a difference in playability between my guitar with them and without them, but if locking tuners are what you are looking for, these do the trick...exponentially speeds up the string changing process...very convenient having the strings cut themselves...only thing i noticed is that when you tighten the thumb screw on the bottom, make sure you snug it up a little bit with some pliers so it holds a little better. other than that, very very nice....

You only get one chance...

By Joe

from Grand Rapids, mi

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

The design is SO cool but you only get one chance to get it right since it cuts the string off so close to the tuner. I had one string pull through and I had to throw it away because it was too short to feed through again. Be SO careful and lock the strings down HARD.

Very Nice

By Christopher Nelson

from Austin, TX

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I love these things! I was a little skeptical based on some of the other reviews, but I must say I am more than pleasantly surprised. I fully expect designs similar to this will become the standard in the future. I decided to put them on my Martin OMC-1E. They didn't fit the stock holes on that guitar, so I had to do a slight modification using a Dremel sanding bit to make the holes a uniform diameter, but that will surely vary from guitar to guitar. Stringing the guitar with these babies installed is a cinch, but the included instructions leave a few things lacking. To clear up that and some of the issues stated in previous reviews, these are the steps I use. I'm yet to have any issues using this technique. 1.) Insert the strings in the bridge and insert the bridge pins. 2.) Tug each string toward the nut to make sure they are seated snug in the bridge with no slippage. 3.) Turn all of the machines so that the side with the silver metal bump is facing the neck. 4.) For each of the strings, insert the string into it's assigned tuning peg through the side with the metal bump. The direction is important. Pull the string all the way through until it is straightened. You don't have to leave slack like you do on normal tuning machines. 5.) IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO UNDER-TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER KNOB. Tighten the string holder knob to lock the string in place. Tighten it as tight as you can with your fingers and pull the string back toward the bridge to test for any slippage. I am able to get it tight enough with my fingers, but as a previous poster said, you might also consider using pliers to give yourself a bit more leverage. You don't have to kill it, but you do need to make them nice and snug so the string cannot slip out. 6.) Turn the tuning knob to start tuning the string. Once it reaches the cutting edge the string will be cut very easily. 7.) Once the string is cut, TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER SCREW AGAIN! Some of the resistance is released once the cut happens and you'll be able to tighten it a little bit more. I believe this is probably the root of the problems others have had with string slippage. 8.) After you have all of the strings in and cut, tune all of the strings up to full tension. After you've done it once you will be able to change all of your strings in a couple of minutes.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

D'Addario support is the best! Since I play a 7 string I needed an additional tuner. Ordering it was easy. One e-mail. Same day response. I received the extra low-b machine by the end of the week.
Old tuner machines were wonky, loose, and gear ratio made tuning difficult. Guitar felt soft and didn't sustain well compared to my other instruments, even after a new nut and custom pickup upgrades. Worst of all it would go out of tune during perfomance. These D'Addario tuning machines breathed some much needed life into the instrument. Improved sustain and playability in addition to stabilizing it and keeping it in tune. It just feels more solid. The 1:18 ratio on the D'Addario is more precise than the stock tuners with no wiggle in the keys. I was skeptical about the auto trim string clipping feature but even that turned out to be a pretty handy feature. Restringing takes a fraction of the time it used to. No more wrapping, pulling, trimming etc.

    Good Tuners

    By Doug

    from California

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

These tuners are awesome. I put them on my Les Paul, I can now change all of my strings in under 5 minutes. Not that it was all that difficult to begin with, but I did pop a string on stage a week ago, and it made it real easy to change and get back to playing. Plus they do a really good job keeping tune. I would recommend these tuners

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I bought these tuners for my 81' gibson Sonex 180 Deluxe. At first i thought that these tuners would be cheaply made. ThenI was amazed at the quality of these tuners. These just slipped into the peg hole that were already there. So There really was no need for drilling and such. The cuting tools on these really blew my mind. The finish is the cherry on top. Great Job Planet Waves.

    Excellent Tuner

    By Michael Wamback

    from Venice Beach, CA

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

Wanted to upgrade the stock Grover tuners on my Epiphone Les Paul. After much research, decided on the Panet Waves. Very happy with the choice. They are pretty much a direct replacement for the Grovers. They are just a hair smaller, but I was able to install them without drilling new holes for the screws. Tuning is awesome now - very smooth with the 18:1 ratio. They also seem very well constructed. Hold the string tightly, and the auto trim feature is really cool. I use a 10 gauge set, and trimming the low "E" took a bit of pressure, but nothing unreasonable. Not sure I would want to use it on really heavy strings though. Hold the tuning very stable, and the black set look really nice on the guitar. If you are considering upgrading your Grovers to a locking set, this is a pretty good choice, especially for the price. Will see how they stand up over time. The only issue I had is that the screw on the back is very close to the tuner compared to the Grover, so you really want to have a proper screwdriver with a thin shaft so you don't strip the screw heads when installing. (I also found it helpful to lube the screw a bit with soap, since it is a tight fit as the hole isn't 100% perfectly aligned with the hole used by Grover - so it's a tight squeeze.)

    just one loop

    By Rich Ott

    from Huntsville Alabama

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I had the same B and E string problem slipping out and found using 1 loop around the post eradicated the problem. Not a perfect situation but its a solution. The reason I gave it 5 stars is because it IS a trim lock tuner, it IS an 18 to one ratio tuner and it IS about half the price of sperzels tuners.

I ordered these machine heads about a week ago and after I read the reviews I was kinda scared because I heard it had some defects so I was half excited to put these on my ESP Ltd EC-10. I had to drill the tuner holes to fit into my guitar but that wasn't an issue. Once I put my strings on (12-60) The excess strings snipped right off. I will absolutely buy these for my next guitar for sure!

        Works Great!

        By Kirt Frischknecht

        from Arcata, CA

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I installed these on an older guitar with cheap tuners, so I had to drill out the headstock holes to fit them. My headstock was probably thicker than usual, so I couldn't use the washers and nuts provided. You probably won't have this issue. It didn't matter, the tuning keys worked just fine without them and now my guitar stays in tune like I always wanted. The finish looks great and the fact that they lock the string and cut it is gravy. I have never changed strings so easily.

        Great tuners...

        By Troy Wheeler

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side:

I bought these tuners for a build that I'm working on after reading some great reviews about them, With 18:1 ration they're super tight and easy to find the sweet spot. The other really cool thing was that I contacted the good folks at planet waves (D'Addario) because the neck I have had a 4+2 Holdworth headstock. They offered to send me the extra tuner for the treble side at no cost! That's awesome customer service! I sent them the receipt after buying the 3+3 set and had the extra in my hands a few days later.
