The Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier with HTS is a moisture reservoir that you suspend inside the body to slowly release moisture. The humidifier protects your guitar from damage even in the driest conditions. The high absorption sponge doesn't shrink or deform, avoiding leakage. The Planet Wave humidifier's removable top and removable sponge make it easy to keep the sponge moist. The unit registers temperature and humidity levels from 20%-99%. A memory function records the date and time of the highest and lowest temperature and humidity levels. The Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier suspends from strings so it doesn't actually touch the guitar.

Best as I can tell it gives an acurate humidity reading. But, I don't have anything to compare it too. I do know that with no humidifier in my guitar case it reads around 20% and the local weather report typically tells us we're around 20% humidity which is parched dry. We use a lot of chapstick. With 1 Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier Item # 100709435 in the sound hole it reads around 32% and then with 2 Item # 100709435 it reads around 40%. So I use 2 of the drop in Humidifiers. One comes with the "HTS" hygrometer and you can buy a second one if you think you need it. Ideally you want to maintain around 45% but in my opinion any improvement over dry will extend the life of your guitar and help prevent problems. If your guitar is laminant top, back and sides you probably don't need one of these by might need something to put in the headstock area of your guitar case to keep the fretboard fresh. Now, I own a decent quality Takamine which are known for durability and not as prone to warping and cracking like Taylors, Martins, Breedloves, etc... are. That's one of the reasons you see so many Takamines on proffesional tours. They are much easier to maintain and they are easier to mix the tone in a live band situation.
I bought this because I had purchased one of their earlier soundhole humidifiers that had a different material inside to hold the water. Instead of the sponge they're using now, it had some sort of a closed cell foam that I think held the water better than the sponge. But don't get me wrong, the sponge works also, and the reservoir still clips onto the strings to hold it in place, which is a good thing. Now about the HTS; I like it a lot, except for one thing, the way it is supposed to attatch to your case. It comes with two velcro tabs about the size of a quarter that has an adhesive strip on one side. You're supposed to remove the protective covering, stick the HTS in your case where you want it to stay, and with the velcro, you'll be able to remove it in order to change the battery when needed. Good idea, right? WRONG!! The darn thing won't stay where you put it, and even if it did, the velcro is so strong that when you want to remove it to change the battery, you'd just rip the thing back off the case again anyway, velcro and all. The Humidifier/HTS is a great idea Planet Waves, because it alows you to keep track of temperature, humdity, and more importantly, Relative Humidity levels, but you really need to come up with a more secure way of attatching the HTS in your case so it's not bouncing around in there damaging my beautiful guitar!
This is a must-have if you play a nice acoustic and live in a dry place, or even just a house that is heated. The gauge is a nice bonus, too - a lot of people over-humidify their guitars, which can be just as dangerous as dryness. I use this on my Gibson Songwriter Deluxe, and absolutely love it. It has done a fantastic job of keeping my guitar at the right humidity. A great product for a great price!
Finally I have found a quality guitar humidifier that holds enough water as well as despenses it safely to maintain the humididty levels I like. It would take at least 3 of those little clay pots or messy sponges to do the job and where do you put them. Thanks Planet Waves!
