D'Addario XL Nickel Wound Electric Guitar strings are world-renowned as "The Player's Choice" amongst players of all genres and styles. XL's are precision wound with nickel-plated steel on a hex-shaped core, resulting in strings with a distinctive bright tone and excellent intonation.
I got these strings yesterday in the mail and as soon as I got home I put these strings on my guitar. I'm no stranger to Bb or drop A tuning, so I knew these strings were going to live up to my expectations. If you are like me, you don't have a baritone guitar, but you are looking at this set because of the really low tuning you can get from these. I wouldn't tune these strings any higher than B standard though. You might be able to get away with drop B if you tried, but the .044 might be too stiff. With a .068 on the low end, you might have to re-slot your nut (unless you have a locking nut, in which case I envy you). I highly recommend these strings if you play deathcore stuff like Whitechapel or Carnifex, or newer Cannibal Corpse and Nile. If this is what you play, these are the strings for you!
I've never been a fan of D'Addario strings, I've tried about 20 different sets in the last 25 years that I've been playing guitar, and I'm always left dissapointed. My biggest problem is that they don't stay in tune, and that's on fixed bridge guitars... But these are the only strings recommended by PRS for my 27.7" scale length baritone guitar. My favorite strings are only recommended for up to 25.5" scale length guitars tuned down to standard A. While they stay in tune for months on my Schecter, even when left in the car for 8 hours in the heat of the day, I'm not sure they can handle the extra tension of the 27.7" scale lenght. While these D'Addario XL Baritone strings will go up to Standard E (I keep mine tuned to A flat standard & use a capo for different tunings), but then again, they are designed for use on true Baritone guitars @ 29.5" scale length & B standard tuning. So for now, I'm sticking with the recommended strings, and honestly, they do seem better than D'Addario's of the past, and for that I would give them 3 1/2 stars if I could. But I just hate going from the house out to the music room & have to re-tune before we start playing...
