Consistent Quality.
You know what to expect from these strings every time you buy them. They have a balanced tone, and a balanced string to string ratio. Bass vs Mids vs Treble is equal and balanced as well. They are not specialty strings, they are just strings and good ones at that. Dollar for dollar, string for string, you can't go wrong with D'Addario's.

Not The Best Out There
The EXL170s for the 5-String bass aren't the best strings out there, but they are not too bad. Personally, I think they are a little on the thin side. They can withstand quite a bit of wear and last for a while. They don't have very good tone to them, and don't ring out well either. Sometimes I wonder if the note I'm supposed to be hitting sounds right or not. They take a while to break in, but they play better afterwards. I would not recommend these strings.

A standard for years past and to come
D'Addario's EXL170-5 have been a standard for five-string bassists since being introduced to the market, and for good reason: long-lasting quality, balanced sound string-to-string, and strength. I've used them on both fretted and fretless basses, and are currently my strings of choice for my fretless basses - they give just enough of a "rock" tone while not eating up my fretboards, being made of nickel-plating. If you're looking for a good, solid tone you simply can't go wrong with D'addario XL Nickelwounds - they're been around for decades for good reason.
