  • D'Addario Never Lets You Down !

As reviewed by james guzzi on 2/16/2012

I'm a 40 year old guy who's been playing guitar since I was 15 years old. My very first 6 string was a Guild and I started outfitting it with D'Addarios right away. They were always reliable and sounded great. Since then I've owned many electric guitars (Yamaha, Gibson, Epiphone, Fender) and D'Addario was the only brand I would use on every guitar. A few years ago I started playing bass guitar and bought a used Ibanez 4 string. Naturally I installed D'Addario's. EXL 165's to be exact. I have been gigging with 2 bands regularly and these strings never let me down. Both bands keep their guitars tuned down a half step as a rule and do drop D tuning on a bunch of songs as well. Which means the low E string is actually tuned down to a C#. When I checked I noticed that D'Addario offered EXL 160's with a slightly thicker D and G string compared to the 165's. Not that I didn't like the 165's. They were great. I just figured since I'm always tuned down, slightly thicker upper strings wouldn't hurt. Sure enough they've been excellent. I recently bought a Fender Precision 4 string and just bought the 160's. They sound great on both my Ibanez and Fender. I play hard rock in both bands and play mostly with my fingers and these strings have a nice bright well-rounded sound and feel great. Never any problems and never any manufacturer defects. And when I saw the 2 pack was available for 25 bucks, you couldn't beat the price. I qualified for free shipping and had them in a few days. WIN ! WIN ! Buy these strings. You will not be disappointed. D'Addario is the only string I will buy and have been doing so for 25 years. Thank You D'Addario !

  • XL's rock til the cows come home!

As reviewed by Kyle Covey on 3/4/2013

I may be too old referencing that old t-shirt slogan for this company's strings... But proof is in the pudding, and nothing really speaks like experience, so... I have played all kinds of strings over the last 25+ years. I have returned to D'Addario. They are more consistent from string to string, pack to pack. Period. There will always be something new, but I sticking to the tried and true - XL's! Side note - get more for your money with the value packs like these!
