Bass strings with a vintage tone and a smooth feel.

Designed to produce a deep, warm tone with smooth feel, D’Addario Tapewound Bass strings are wound using a flattened black nylon, which is polished to an ultra-smooth finish. These long-lasting, well-balanced strings are expertly engineered to provide optimal tension and are gauged to fit properly on standard bass saddles and nuts. Tapewounds may be used on fretted or fretless basses and are designed to deliver a vintage tone ranging from the “thump” of an upright bass to the focused depth of traditional flatwound strings.

  • GIVE'M A TRY!

As reviewed by Angela Fariello on 1/16/2012

I guess by them being marked down so much, they may not be a popular item. I prefer the sound and feel flatwounds and do have a bass with roundwounds, but I wanted to experiment and put these tapewounds on my acoustic/electric to hopefully get the deeper, upright sound. LOVE THEM! My comment is this: If you normally purchase long scale strings, these will initially appear to be way too short. I was very upset when I first started to set them up, but, patience and an extra couple of hands to help will be worth it. It took SEVERAL tunings before they really stretched out, stayed in tune and settled to a comfortable action....An initial buzz on the lower end gradually disappeared with each tuning. I chose this brand because of the price reduction but mostly because I wanted the lighter gauge that only D'Adds offered. GIVE'M A TRY!

  • Takes a bit of getting used to....

As reviewed by Kyle Covey on 1/30/2013

I've been playing since 1986 (so much for dating myself), and have used a vast plethora of different brands of bass strings and guages. I wanted to try something new, and as I am switching back to D'Addario for all bass and guitar strings (as they have been proven to be sonically consistent from pack to pack), I decided to give the Nylon Tapewounds a try. I use the Chromes Flatwounds on my fretless, and wanted a less sharp sound for my 1991 Stingray, without sacrificing all the nuances as flats sometimes do. The Nylon Tapewounds look really cool, but the feel of them takes getting used to. At first they almost feek like ukulele strings and even though they are the same .50-.105 gauge I am used to - they felt smaller in mass. They get a good sound, although the warmth is really subdued to my ear; though I suspect it starts in the aforementioned feel of the strings. I do not fault the product as I believe it is performing the way it was designed to - it is just not what I was going for. This may change, as I am giving them a full chance for me to grow on them, but I may try Half Rounds next!

  • Love these strings!

As reviewed by Michael Brown on 2/2/2012

I put these tapewounds on my 62RI Jazz bass, hoping for an earthier tone, not necessarily an upright bass sound, but less metallic and woodier, if that makes sense. Mission accomplished! These are fantastic sounding strings. They play almost as smooth as flatwounds and sound fantastic on the J bass. My music is Americana with a bit of Celtic influence and these nail the bass tones I'm wanting. Can't wait to put a set on my P bass too!
