Classic electric guitar string tone dates back to the 1950s, when pure nickel was the primary alloy used. As the need for brighter tone and higher magnetic guitar strings grew in the '60s, nickel-plated steel became the industry standard. D'Addario XL strings feature nickel-plated steel, but these EPN115 XL Pure Nickel strings offer a warmer, vintage tone alternative which many enthusiasts prefer.

  • Great Strings

As reviewed by Billy on 7/25/2011

I mostly play blues, and if I was to be someone who played with alot of distortion, with a Billy Gibbons or even Eric Clapton range, strings really wouldn't a big difference. But I play rather clean, with a Buddy Guy or Robert Cray amount of overdrive, and you really hear the difference between strings around there. These are noticeably less bright, with almost a flatwound tone without the flatwound feel. The less brightness is good for me as I use a Fender Super Reverb on the Bright Channel, and it gives my Fender Jaguar a little less sting, and more bite. It does more for my Jazzmaster as well, giving it even bigger of a sound because these strings add more bottom end, and cut a little off the top. These strings also seem to drive my amp a little harder, as I'm able to get some light distortion at a bit of a lower level, as that is very good with such a big amp. The Strings feel very nice under my fingers, and I've tried Flatwound strings before to cut some highs, but they cost too much, and were not as easy for my fingers to grab when going into bends. The strings lasted about a month and a week, while my normal Earnie balls usually last a week short of a month, which helps alot with money.

I feel that these jazz/bues strings hold great tone and the test of a thousand+ notes+ bends - they return right back to near perfection, ready to take another cruise in the "sea of guitara".
