I have spent over thrity years looking for the best sounding and best feeling strings for the style of music that I play. I was never completely satisfied until I ordered these strings. They have the sweet bell like sound of round wound strings but also, the just ever so slightly warm yet subdued and dark atmosphere of the flat wound jazz guitar sound that those of us who appreciate it, long for and desire. I use The D'Addario RHR350 guitar strings on a custom D'angelico Excel Archtop with a 40 watt Fender Blues Deluxe amplifer. The Sound is absouletely unbelievable. I can only describe it as crisp but mellow and smooth. It truly is the best of both the flat and round guitar string world. They are not stiff but flexable with a no noise round wound grip. I have found my strings. I have found my sound. For me as a musican, this is monumental. These strings are an adventure into the world of Johnny Smith, Wes Montgomery and the likes. Think about it. No more Flat verses round issues. You now have the perfect blend. Bright, sweet, yet laid back smooth with out the finger noise. I wrote this review because there was next nothing written about the strings. They are worth 3 time the price I paid for them. Get out of the hear say world and try these. You'll love them.
I've been playing for 36 years and own many guitars. I have been using Thomastik-Infeld Swing Jazz strings on my ES-175 and Yamaha AEX-1500 jazz boxes, but somehow found that they dulled the sound of the ES-175 too much; however, round-wound strings were too bright and not the answer. I did try the Thomastik Be-Bop series half-wound but was not happy with those either. These strings are the best I've found so far. After attempting to swap pickups in search of a more acoustic, woody tone and then swapping them back for the stock '57's, I decided to try the D'Addario half-wounds, and VIOLA (!), I've got the acoustic tone of the instrument back! I still recommend the Thomastik Swing strings for many archtops, but for the ES-175, I'm sticking with these for now.
I have been a performing guitarist for 45 years and have used many brands and gauges of strings. For many years I used 13-56 or heavier to get a rich and full sound. A friend suggested I try the EHR350 set. I was astounded at the full and rich tone. I play mainly jazz and chord melody styles. These strings work great on my Super400 and I would highly suggest to anyone that wants good playability, less finger noise and great tone to give these strings a try. You will be happy you did.
