I bought this amp new thinking its a crown so it should be good, Boy was I mistaken this thing is noisy, my old mackie sounded tons better. I dont know if I got a bad one or if they all are like this. It is loud though, but also noisy. Stay clear of this one.
The XLS-5000 is an awesome amp. There is little or no hissing depending on the wiring in the establisment.95% of the time there is no hissing whatsoever and where there is hissing you must be with-in 3-4 feet to hear it.All my previous amps had lots of hissing including the Crown CE-2000,Crown CE-4000,Peavey 800,and the QSC. There is no worry about clipping since you never turn it up more than 1/2 way or 3/4 at the very most. This amp draws 20 amps and therefore it can blow a circuits if turned all the way up in 4ohm mode..If you are sure that the establisment has a 20 or 30amp circuit then go for it.If your using a powered bass box then use a separate circuit breaker for the bass box. The one drawback is it's weight it is very heavy, but who cares the peformance is excellent and certainly the best amp I've ever owned.
So this amp is serious power. I would honestly rate it better than the QSC 5050 in terms of sound and power. I use this amp to power 8 Cerwin Vega EL-36B, (4 per side); and this amp does it with ease. There is plenty of power and with proper ventilation this amp can provide enough power for those for hours at a time! I have owned this amp for 8 months now and never has it failed me. It has been rack mounted and I take good care of my equipment, making sure not to allow my amps to clip. The downsides of this amp are that it only has 1 set of inputs so chaining to another amp is impossible, but who needs another amp, 8 Vegas not enough? Secondly this amp needs power to create power. If you are running at 4 ohms or less I strongly recommended placing it on its own 25 or 30 Amp circuit. I have tripped breakers before. Lastly, it's heavy, but hey so are the Vegas. Use wheels, after-all....no pain no gain!
