Problematic but very handy

By Randy Freemire

from San Francisco, CA

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

Have had this guy forever- 6, maybe 7 years. Most weeks I use it a coupla times a week, go to drum circles and parties, and use it to mic my voice/flutes, as well as let other folks plug their guitar in. What I like about it is it's light weight, small size, built-in effects, 2 channels with 3 band eq, and easy recharge system: just plug it in, and it's good to go for the next time. It is pretty noisy, but in my circumstances it rarely matters. The sound quality for voice/flutes is half way decent, and when needed it can serve as a small ipod pa; but it really doesn't have much oomph as a keyboard pa. The thing that completely sucks about though is the squealing that happens on the mic channel. If I change the volume level, the sound cuts out for a second and then comes back howling and feedbacking- very embarrassing! This apparently is a known problem because of the way the pots are soldered directly to the circuit board. Crate repaired it out of warranty free one time, but it's back to doing it. I've re soldered the pots on the mic channel, but it hasn't solved the problem completely. I've loved having this amp, but the continued problem with it makes me look longingly for one of the Roland portable units.

Amazing Sound from a Battery Powered Amp!

By John Sims

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

I purchased my Crate Limo a number of years ago and it saw a lot of use on the sidewalks of miami beach from 2001 to 2003. The battery life when accommodating 2 guitars and a mic on a full charge is a solid 8 hours at full volume. And it puts out the sound! I've used it as a monitor and harmonica amp too. I will agree with other reviews, there's a very distinctive HUM when up on the higher volumes, not so noticeable out doors or in a noisy bar but in a quiet room, it's pretty bad. but for portability, easy of use and flexibility, not to mention the built in effects, like reverb and distortion which are great! I did have problems with the volume pots on the knob controls. They get dirty and need professional cleaning. There's no way to access the internals of this amp without voiding the warranty. It works superb as a voice PA for things like company picnics or other outdoor events. I loved mine for solo gigs in parks or small private venues.

Ideal amp for small jams and for single performers

By Erv Troyer

from Lagrange, IN

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

I have had one of these amps for 5 or 6 years, and I find it ideal for taking to small acoustic jams. I provide one mike for the singer so we can hear him/her above all the instruments. I have never had the mike volumn higher than 1/4 of the knob. Sometimes I plug my guitar in as I play a lot of lead guitar. I also use it at open mike jams as a monitor for my Telecaster guitar, which is connected through the main mixer board. I also disagree with the comments of those that say it is not well built. Mine got caught in a rain storm with no cover (don't ask why) and I poured water out of it when I found it. I let it dry out for a day before turning it on and it was OK. Another time it fell off a 4 foot step ladder onto a cement floor. One corner was dented, and the battery tore loose. I repaired the battery mount and it is still as good as new. I have a friend who does coffee house gigs who has 3 of these amps. At most gigs this is all he needs - he uses one for a monitor, and the others for voice/guitars.

It's not bad, but surprisingly not so loud nor well built

By Mr. Q

from New York, NY

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

I have had extensive experience with this portable amp with my college band over the past 2 years. This thing, when cranked, is loud in enclosed moderately-sized rooms only, even on the distortion channel with the gain, volume, and EQ maxed, which is sort of disappointing for a 50W amp. Also be warned, if you crank the amp too high, you will get a very significant amount of buzz. The higher the volume, the more embarrassingly unacceptable your tone will become. I would agree with the reviews that the unit is easily damaged - the tone used to be passable, but after a year of regular use and transport, the sound has degraded (at moderate volumes even) to sounding like a dying animal. The pots are of low quality - the plastic seems to be waiting to pop off. Additionally, the AC adapter input seems to be malfunctioning, as the charger light never stays on, and the battery only charges minimally after a 24 hour period. All in all, I think you can find better portable amps for your money that are better made too. I'd suggest taking a look at the Roland Cube 40XL, for instance (it's also much lighter).

Sound good when they work

By Jake

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

I now own three of these amps. I had to buy more than one because they keep needing repairs and I cannot be within one for any length of time as I am a street musician. Unfortunately this is the best option for street musicians at this price point. They sound really good when they work but they are very easily damaged. The potentiometers are made very cheaply and they break within weeks, resulting in crackling, popping and intermittent DSP settings. The serial number on the back of the amp is just a very thin sticker which is easily damaged or even falls off with repeated outdoor use. If the serial number shows any damage or falls off Crate will not honor the warranty at all. This happened with one of my amps and I had to pay for the repairs even though I had purchased an extended warranty only had it for a little while. Would give this one star but the fact is they sound really good when they work. Buyer beware.

crate TX50

By dwain c

from marion IL

Comments about Crate Taxi Series TX50DB Limo 50W 1x10 Battery Powered Guitar Combo Amp:

I have read a lot of users of the crate limo series amps complaining about quality and sound issues. It is not, in my opinion built for 110 power. 110 outlet power from your wall will provide more power. Remember it is 9 volts of battery or wall drop down voltage. Now your regular amps have 110 or 120 voltage with some drop down voltage due to the transformers inside, some don't. There is usually some type of drop down voltage, but usually more than 9 volts. But, on the other hand the limo provides plenty of power at 9 volts with battery or not. I have owned one for a couple of years now, and I like it because it is portabile and can I carry it where ever I want, and it provides plenty of power for my situation. Sound effects are great to, fuzz, delay, reverb etc. So, if portability is your desire, go for it. It does have an amazing sound for only 9 volts of battery power.
