Fantastic tone for an affordable price.

The Crate FlexWave FW65 is a mid-sized stage/rehearsal guitar combo amp that uses the FlexWave™ Evolution 5 preamp and patented Sequential Cascading Gain™ technology to pump 65-watts of rich, articulate tone through a 12" speaker. Variable 3-channel operation lets you switch between clean, dirty, and saturated channels with the included remote footswitch. And Digital Signal Processing (DSP) effects add separate delay, modulation, and reverb to your signal. Crate's Channel Tracking automatically stores your DSP settings, so the amp recalls which effect is assigned to each channel when you switch between them. Develop your own sound by tweaking the onboard 3-band EQ. The solo channel features our proprietary Shape Control circuit for crafting dynamic custom lead tones. A built-in tuner ensures that you're constantly in tune.

I've had this amp for about two years now. For a practice amp it's great, but a bit loud and you probably won't go past about 9:00 volume wise for that. The amp is definitely loud enough to play over a drummer. For recording it's fine as well and there isn't much of the scratchy distortion background noise you find with a lot of high gain amps when not playing. The effects are't all that great. When you turn them on, there is a sort of "wavy" sound going on in the back. It kind of sounds like you're under water for lack of a better description. There also is some slight fuzz that you can hear while the effects are on. Over all the sound of the amp won't be bad, but you're pretty limited as far as the sounds you can get. The clean isn't bad but it's definitely pretty heavy on the low frequencies. And it doesn't have that famous Fender Shimmer. Also you can't get any sort of tweed break up from this clean. But it's not a bad clean over all. Next is the Overdrive Channel. To me, this channel is pretty weak. It sounds like it's lacking the low end even if you scoop the EQ on it. So i usually skipped over this channel. Last is the High Gain Channel. Not bad. Not great. It was hard to find a good medium for this channel. It uses the EQ settings you use from the Overdrive Channel and the Shape knob further "shapes" them. Towards 3:00, more scoop. Towards 9:00, more mids. This channel was good for playing rhythm parts. But to me, the sounds got a bit muddy for lead riffs. The built in tuner is nice, but it's not very accurate. I was usually a good 20 cents off from my regular tuner. This amp has been very reliable and I haven't had any issues with it to date. Carrying this amp is easy. It can easily be done with guitar in one hand, amp in the other. I feel like I've gotten better and I know exactly what i want out of an amp now and this isn't quite it. I would recommend this amp for someone who's maybe still learning guitar or trying to find their sound. In this price range you probably won't find something better, to me. But if you want an amp you won't out grow and can use for years, this probably isn't it.

  • very good amp.

i tried this out at my local guitar shop, i love it, i went in there and told the guy exactly what i wanted which was a lot of distortion and an amp made for metal. he showed me this amp and i love it. the effects get a little annoying however because its hard to make those go, but hey if you dont turn the darn knobs for them, which i dont plan on doing, then nothing will happen. but anyway back to the point, this amp is incredible, but i didnt buy it at that shop because the price tag on it was 420 dollars, a bit too much and since i can get it for 250 or somethin like that on here, this works better. this amp also has a pretty good clean channel, the rhythym is ok, you can get buy from it, overall this is a very very good amp, well done crate!

  • AMAZING AMP!!!!

As reviewed by Kevin Delphoy on 8/4/2008

I have had this amp for about a year now and let me say it is awesome. It has three channels. The first one is a clean channel in which you can get some jazzy, bluesy sounds. The second is overdrive where you can get some guns n roses, and zz top sounds. The third and my favorite where you can get disturbed, metallica, pantera sounds. so yeah if you want a amp that can go LOUD!!! this one is awesome.
