High-end tone and quality at a mid-range price

By John Gannon

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Cordoba C7 SP/IN Acoustic Nylon String Classical Guitar:

I've owned the Cordoba C7 SP/IN for a little over a month, and am absolutely thrilled with it! I'm a self-taught, casual player and I do not play classical music, so my review of this guitar should be read with that in mind. I play mainly country, folk and rock, and I bought this guitar because, after about ten years of playing both steel string and nylon string guitars, I just prefer the feel, tone and playability of a nylon string guitar. This guitar replaced a LaPatrie Etude, which I owned for about a month, that had to be returned because of a defect. The experience of owning both guitars in such close proximity afforded me the opportunity to evaluate the merits of both. Although the LaPatrie was a nice guitar, the Cordoba has, in my opinion, a much clearer, more balanced tone and a more high-end feel in terms of the finish and build quality. In terms of tone, the C7 is bright and clear with excellent intonation and reliable tuning. At the same time, there is more than enough lower end to create a very nice balance with the naturally brighter mids and trebles that are characteristic of a guitar with a solid spruce top. The LaPatrie, and other guitars I tested, all tended to be darker, more bassy, and tended to become muddy or indistinct when playing chords or with a pick. With the C7, by contrast, the individual notes of the chord can be heard distinctly and crisply and the bass doesn't overwhelm everything else. I have found the build and finish quality to be outstanding. The set-up was perfect right out of the box. And don't just take my word for it; In light of my experience with the defective LaPatrie, I took the guitar to a local luthier for inspection within the return period, and he confirmed that the guitar was free of defects. The frets are all perfectly level with clean ends; and the glossy finish is beautiful and evenly applied. Since I frequently play with a pick, I am particularly happy with the finish of this guitar which appears to be durable, but not too thick to deaden the vibration of the top. The guitar is very light (clearly not overbuilt), but at the same time does not feel flimsy or fragile. Finally, this is just a beautifully appointed guitar. The solid spruce top has tight, clean grain; the rosewood back and sides are beautiful, and the mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard complete a truly beautiful guitar. The rosewood binding is a particularly striking feature in a price range in which you more often wind white synthetic binding. On a final note, I know that many people may be reluctant to buy a Cordoba in this price range because they are made in China. I must confess that I had narrowed my choices to the LaPatrie and the Cordoba and initially went with the LaPatrie because it wasn't built in China. Again, no slight to LaPatrie which makes very good guitars, but I consider it a stroke of luck that the particular LaPatrie I received was defective because otherwise I would never have bought the Cordoba C7. To those, like me who are reluctant to buy a Chinese-made guitar, I would only say that Cordoba guitars are designed by top luthiers to exacting standards with high-quality materials and in my experience, the quality does not suffer at all because of where the actual construction process occurs. I am not a classical guitarist, so I cannot speak to how well the C7 SP/IN serves classical repertoire; However, if you're a country, folk or rock player who wants to add a nylon-string guitar to your collection or who, like me (and Willie Nelson, to name just the most notable of many non-classical nylon players) just prefers a nylon-string guitar as your primary instrument, you cannot go wrong with the Cordoba C7 SP/IN.

Beautiful tone for a nice low price

By David P

Comments about Cordoba C7 SP/IN Acoustic Nylon String Classical Guitar:

I will not make myself out to be an expert by any means, but I do have an eye for quality and a keen musical ear. I bought my Spruce top C7 two months ago and have received many compliments and attention from other guitarists. I am taking a classical guitar class, the instructor (who owns a specialty classical guitar business) was very impressed by the tone, workmanship and most of all the value (price) of this C7. When I was shopping for the guitar, I played every classical guitar in one of biggest Guitar Center stores around. This C7 is a definite standout from all the others in its class and honestly compared to the much higher-priced hand built models in the $3500-$6000 in terms of tone quality and playing ease. In my opinion, the Rodriguez models and others offered by Guitar Center and do not produce the beautiful, rich, warm tone that this bargain-priced guitar does. I am very impressed with the workmanship and tone of the Cordoba product line. I almost bought a C5 but the C7's styling and warmer tone won me over. The C9 was impressive as well but seemed to be a more ornate and detailed version of the C7. Had I not seen the price tag, I would have assumed that the C7 was one of the top-shelf expensive models. Oh yeah, I almost forgot; The soft case/gig bag is a handy bonus. The gig bag has backpack straps and a zippered pocket, just the perfect size for your guitar textbook or sheet music.

This is it for me.

By Guitar student

from CA

Comments about Cordoba C7 SP/IN Acoustic Nylon String Classical Guitar:

I am a critical person when researching a new hobby. Classical guitar is a new hobby for me, hopefully it will grow in me for the rest of my life, as it is with piano. Researching the best value (quality and price) is exhausting and you really got to filter out all the different reviews, critiques, and opinions.
After I distilled all that I learned, I came to decide upon this particular guitar in Spruce. I gave it a shot and after an anxious wait during its ship journey through frigid weather (Cordoba and/or Guitar Center did a great job double-packing) I opened the box up to reveal a beautiful quality gig bag (not just some generic bag or flimsy bag) and inside was just a stunning work of art.

I checked all over the guitar what I needed to check and it was flawless and I was just in pure excitement. The workmanship of these guitars (even this entry level one) I can see and feel and hear the ownership of this make and workmanship. Whoever did it, where ever he or she is, I judge that person to be one of being proud of his/her task or art. A person with the attitude of care and thought, like this instrument is his own.

This is technically not my first guitar, after a few decisions, purchases, dissatisfaction, returns and more streamlined decisions, I finally can say this is my first guitar I will own...... Forever !!

well, not forever, but hopefully for many many years and decades.
Thanks Cordoba continue the great job !!

Great Guitar!

By S D

from Ashburn, VA

Comments about Cordoba C7 SP/IN Acoustic Nylon String Classical Guitar:

Cordoba C7 SP/IN is my first ever guitar.

My teacher gave me his Cordoba C3M to practice for a few weeks. Since then I love the Cordobas and when I was looking to buy my first guitar, Cordoba was the obvious choice.

I didn't want to keep on upgrading my guitars. so, I bought the C7.

My guitar teacher has held positions as a Cultural Director for a Middle east country, before making US his new home. It is hard enough to be a music teacher... my teacher was working as a cultural director for a country!!!

So you can understand how talented he is. He still gives many live performances and he uses very high-end concert guitars for such concerts. He uses a $1200...made in Spain guitar to teach the class.

I took my Cordoba C7 to get my teacher's feedback, he was extremely impressed and said "Your C7 plays almost 95% of my $1200 guitar...Great guitar."

Need I say more!

Very happy with the great sound and build quality.

Comments about Cordoba C7 SP/IN Acoustic Nylon String Classical Guitar:

This is a great guitar. I played for many years and tapered off quite a bit - and now I'm back, so I decided to shop for a new guitar. The old one (a Yamaha with laminate cedar) is still in great shape and sounds good. But the C7 fills the room with a rich sound, is amazing to look at, and feels great to play. The black tuning pegs on this model add an extra touch of elegance to an already beautiful piece of work. Excellent price and perfect for any player really - can't wait to play a mini concert in my living room.
