Review of Cordoba 45R

I recently purchased the Cordoba 45R because of the prestige surrounding its name. I must say, the acclaim is well deserved. From the first time you lay eyes on the guitar, the physical asthetics are readily apparent. Gold plated tuners, beautiful ebony fretboard, elegant rosewood back and sides, and an intricate rosette pattern give this instrument a look that rivals guitars several times its price. The sound response was equally impressive. The cedar top lends itself nicely to gentle picking and swift chord playing, though it left a bit to be desired when put through heavy rasgueados, seeming a bit too passive and subdued. The action of the strings was just right; however, there is a bit of string buzz on the low E when tuned down to a dropped D. The neck was superbly comfortable and provided ease of operation when progressing through chord changes. The fit and finish of the guitar is good as well, the only flaw I noticed was a small amount of glue on the inside bracing that was not cleared away. Overall, I would say the Cordoba 45R is a fantastic deal and I would recommend it to those looking for a great guitar at an entry-level price.

Codoba Inspires

I played several higher priced classical-flamenco offerings and they didn't have anything over the Cordoba series. I've owned and played the Cordoba 45R for about one year and am delighted with several aspects of the instrument. Not only is this an aesthetically beautiful work, their is an ease of playability that will entice even committed steel string musicians. The light body construction consisting of rosewood sides/back and red cedar top make for a tonal resonance of sweetness and clarity tempered with full, richer qualities. The neck and ebony fretboard are masterfully shaped and provide a perfect stage for the fingers to dance. I respect this company for their commitment to music evidenced by the craftsmanshifp and artistry that produced this gem, but also by their choice to make it affordable so that it's inspiration will be felt by many.

A Much More Expensive Sounding Guitar

This is a great buy. I have spent hours playing several guitars by every guitar maker in the store (including a few smaller luthiers) and the Cordoba 45R was the best sounding guitar. It has a full, deep tone, crisp highs, and overall warm sound. THe wood choices are excellent. The only thing this guitar lacks is a little in volume and bass, but otherwise it is superb!

Check it out first

A wonderful guitar. Workmanship on the instrument is really astonishing for the price: absolutely everything fits together very well. The top is a very nice piece of cedar, good grain, the sides and back are rosewood veneer but feel solid. The ebony fingerboard is very nice indeed, and the frets are laid out imacculately. The only visibly cheap parts of the guitar are the plastic saddle and nut, which are disappointing; the tuning gears look nice, but I found they have so-so action. I wish someone would save on the gold plating and just put out a functional set of gears for once. The major qualification to all this workmanship was the optimistic action set up from the factory. Mine had minor to significant string buzz on the lower range of the wound strings depending on the weather until I raised the saddle. These are hand made, and few other players report this problem, so check it out first. Hand made guitar, hand made quality control... This aside, the sound of the instrument is very good: reasonably loud but also responsive to a delicate touch, very clear and distinct with few intonation issues. It might be on the bright side for some(surprisingly so for the cedar constuction), but on the positive side even complex voicings sound distinct and sharp. I bought this as an instrument to learn classical technique after many years playing jazz on electrics, so my opinion is probably coloured by that. The guitar feels very comfortable to play, it has reasonable action even now. The combination of fast action, ruler-straight neck, very bright almost percussive tone and some buzz made me think that this guitar looks in some ways like a heavier-than-usual flamenco guitar.
