I got this board to do lighting for some local bands and so far just playing with it is great! I love the built in mic really comes in handy but be sure the speakers playing have bass or the board won't pick it up. So far I have put together a bunch of chases in 4 days. If you have 8 or less fixtures and want to put on a show, then this is your board!

Bought one of these as we wanted to change our existing unit for a rack mounted one and boy did I make a mistake!

Chauvet's designers should be awarded the prize for the worst design conceivable. The unit works perfectly, does what it says on the box as they say but it is NOT suitable for rack mounting.

To start with the holes for rack mounting are not in the standard places, requiring a 1/2 U space above and below the unit meaning it actually sits in the middle of a three U space. Why? Well this is to do with the configuration of the connectors.

It is difficult to imagine who came up with the idea of putting the DMX connector and the power connector, not to mention the power switch ON THE TOP of the unit! Mount it in a rack and the connections stick out above the unit preventing you getting to them or putting it at the top of a rack or having anything in the space above it. This has to be the worst imaginable design, rendering it useless for the purpose for which it is allegedly designed, rack mounting.

What's worse is that when I looked at the manual before purchasing it it showed what it called the rear panel, with the connections. Whoever wrote the manual must have had it sitting on the desk in front of them with the controls at the top to be able to call the top panel (when mounted in a rack) the rear.

Buy it if you really want it, it's certainly easy to use, but don't even consider it if you are thinking of putting it into a rack.
Does what it claims to and is easy to program, rack mounting not an option though despite what they claim, see my overall opinion.
Seems well enough built if you exclude the idiotic design of the case and connections, see later.
Qould be good value for money if it could actually be fitted into a standard rack.

not bad for the price

Comments about Chauvet Obey 10 DMX Lighting Controller:

Seems to work ok, the knobs fell off the sliders the first time I used it. Comes with a good power supply chord. The manual print is so small it is very hard to read. Had a coupon so i guess it's not bad for the price.

Until Chauvet increases it's quality control and provides more detailed instructions I would not recommend any of the products I've recently exerienced--DMX controllers Obey 3 and Obey 10 and the mini 4 bar and 4 bar lights.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 10 DMX Lighting Controller:

I have a number of lights, but the driving force to obtain a DMX controller was the recent acquisition of a number of Chauvet 4Bars. The 4Bars have 15 channels of control, and the supplied foot controls are, for lack of a better word, inadequate. I obtained the Obey 10 as a restock, which I was willing to do on the bet that customers found it too hard to use. And, there is certainly a learning curve. In addition, the documentation is weak at best. It does, however, once you get it sussed, work pretty well.

The 4Bars have 15 channels of control, which means you need to set lighting faders on two pages. DMX is a "change of state" protocol, so you have to move the faders on the new page -even if they are seemingly in the right place. I'm familiar with this kind of programming, but it can still create havoc if you forget to check which page you are on and start making changes. At this price point, however, there aren't a lot of controllers with 16 discrete faders, so that was a known issue on acquisition.

Programming is a bit odd and it is easy to erase or over-write or place programs on the wrong program location. Clicking through programs is a bit hit and miss and the control sometimes jumps over steps (the step control button is poorly made IMHO). The most important thing to remember, however, is that to run a program the fixtures must all be OFF! That took a long while to discover as it is not mentioned anywhere. (yes, I may have to resort to doing a video and that would be frightening).

Chases work, but by default run through ALL chase sequences. Not sure why that is, the manual indicates that is not the works, but it is reliably so. I was able to *de-select* a sequence once chases were started, but that seems woefully backwards.

However, quirks aside, it does turn lights on and off, allow for some programming, and generally works. At this price point, it wins. If I were a pro or a church looking to have volunteers run my lights, I think I'd move up the ladder a bit and get something that is a bit more intuitive. If your lighting needs are basic (e.g. audio engineer who needs to provide some basic lighting at shows as I do), then it's a bargain. Know what you're getting, what the channels do on the fixtures, and practice before deploying.

    good and bad

    By triguy

    About Me Experienced

Comments about Chauvet Obey 10 DMX Lighting Controller:

If you are a small band or a home musician that wants some control over a small lighting set up to make you feel like a rockstar in your playroom, then the Obey 10 probably has the flexability you need.

You can program a number of scenes to avoid messing with dimmers everytime the tempo changes.

I would not want to take this on the road with me as the build quality is dodgy. The channel and effect sliders feel cheap and fragile and the buttons dont have a reassuring clunk when pressed making you feel this thing can fall off a table or truck and still perform.

The lack of a master dimmer is also a glaring oversight. The blackout feature will bring down the lights when needed but if you want to dim the entire scene you better have fingers that can work in harmony.

Just got 4 Venue Thin Par 64 lights and this Obey 10 DMX controller. First experience with these....so it took a little bit to get them going but now that I have figured it out WOW the possibilities are infinite. Has 6 chases that you set up and then can control them in Auto Mode by adjusting the Speed controller - or in Sound Mode with changes by the beat of the music. 6 Chases * but each chase can have from 1 to 999 steps !!
