Charvel launches its new flagship USA Select series with the So-Cal Style 1 HSS. It taps straight into original-era Charvel DNA for a sleek, ferocious model with “old-school throwback” specs our high-performance players have been clamoring for, such as ’80s-style body perimeters, finely shaped neck profiles, fast compound radius fingerboards with rolled edges, non-recessed Floyd Rose bridges, and more.

The alder So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR body is complemented by a single-ply black pickguard, a one-piece quartersawn maple neck with one-way vintage-style bullet truss rod, and a maple (black dot inlay) compound radius fingerboard with rolled edges. Pure tone pours from a DiMarzio DP100F Super Distortion bridge pickup and DiMarzio DP-116 HS2 neck and middle pickups, with five-way “super” blade pickup switching that delivers the bridge pickup only (position 1), bridge pickup inner coil and middle pickup (position 2), bridge pickup inner coil and neck pickup (position 3), neck and middle pickups (position 4) and neck pickup only (position 5).

Other premium features include a single control knob (master volume), top-mounted Strat output jack, black hardware, Floyd Rose Original non-recessed bridge with 37mm block, and more. Includes hardshell case.

Comments about Charvel USA Select So-Cal HSS FR Maple Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

I really like that Guitar! You can change from a very hot humbucker to a sweet neck pickup without loose volume. This guitar sounds amazing for stratocaster fans and turn possible to get really metal sounds when you use the bridge pickup. The finish is amazing! If you see it only in online stores, pay attention in that color. Is a mate white .. I just see that when I catch up on Guitar Center, but it's a good surprise! Sorry for my english, i'm from Brazil.

Comments about Charvel USA Select So-Cal HSS FR Maple Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

First, I purchased a MIM Pro Mod San Dimas (Pro-Mod So-Cal has different pups). I wanted something shreddy that could hopefully still get passable classic strat tones like position 4 and 5. I wasn't entirely happy with the Pro Mod coil splitting sound and the fact that it couldn't do a sound like position 4. Didn't like the uneven paint work along pickup edges, or the feel/look of chrome floyd (it worked fine), and I happen to prefer the top mount jack because of the high angle I sometimes hold the guitar at when sitting on the couch. I also didn't really like the super low recessed floyd after using it a bit, it was even lower than my recessed Jacksons that I enjoy playing.

Tried this USA So-Cal and found it to perfect all-around, I literally wouldn't change anything about it. Well maybe I'd get that no-load tone control installed some day, but for now, I can cut treble with a Boss GE-7.

The non-recessed floyd sits up higher off the body and it still pulls up a full step on most strings.

At a glance, the USA seems a lot like the MIM guitars. You'd think they aren't worth the added cost. They are very different beasts though. It has a downward neck angle that enables the high bridge. The strings are precisely parallel to the neck with low action and yet the pickups, string height and bridge make the picking hand feel totally uncrowded and free.

Neck is quartersawn one-piece and just feels more precisely straight and stable than the Pro Mod neck (which is saying a lot, since the Pro Mod necks aren't bad). I can't find even a minor quality control issue on this guitar, but I felt like the MIM had a few different minor issues to overlook. I got it with a 15% off coupon and it comes with a really nice case, unlike the Pro-Mod. When you account for that, it was a $1550 guitar. I think the features and overall quality are easily worth $600 more than the Pro-Mod, and I much prefer the features to Fender's USA offerings at that price point.
