I have a feeling that this thing has the potential to be a Swiss army knife. First, off I'm not a keyboardist/pianist, guitar and vocal are principal instruments, but I was looking a little keyboard to assist in teaching music lessons. This little guy certainly does the trick for basic theory--chord construction, scales, chord voicings, etc. The keys are certainly smaller, but does the trick. As far as tones/voices from the keyboard itself, plenty of they are usable. It has a drum patterns and even 5 drum pads. Great for learning. There build looks and feels pretty sturdy and the size is small enough to fit in a backpack, and it's pretty lightweight. What I didn't expect: -My 3 old girls loves it! Totally gives her an opportunity to play around and experiment. Totally warms the cockles of my heart. -The headphone jack--as the other reviewer noted--can be plugged into a PA. This opens up the uses to include all sorts of things! I don't know enough about cables, and I haven't had the time to try it out with my line6 pod or any of my other effects, but with a headphone adaptor the possibilities appear endless. I suppose you could run it through any sort of effect pedal? Volume from the unit itself is decently loud as well. -It looks way cooler than the casio board my family had when I was a kid. Seriously. Only negative: it DOESN'T COME WITH A POWER SUPPLY, which is why I gave it 4 stars. It can run on 6 AA batteries, but I found an adaptor that matches on Amazon for $10, and they arrived about the same time. I have had for a mere 3 weeks, so I can't comment on durability. So far the keys have taken quite a bit of drool from my daughter and seems to be working okay. Check out some of the youtube videos and see what people have done creatively with it. Totally recommend it.

However, I was not expecting that a.) there would be no ac connector, or b.) that the salesperson would not advise me of that. When I did figure this out, does Guitar Center carry that Item? No, not at the store. One must needs order it online, of course. Well, whatever...

surprising

Comments about Casio SA-46 Mini Keyboard:

These little Casio keyboards have come a long way since the company began production. Although there are some of the "cheesy" tones associated with the cheap keyboards of the past, I was surprised by the number of great, usable tones this has for such an inexpensive piece. A few of the tones have a slight, and I mean slight, bit of noise present, but hardly noticeable. It puts out a good volume through the speakers, but the real surprise came when I ran the headphone/line out to a P A system. It had a massive sound and can be used professionally. I bought it for portability, and I use it to lead kirtan. One of the best values out there!

Comments about SA-46 Mini Keyboard:

A birthday gift for my Six year old daughter. She can't put it down.
She has had it for five days and just loves it.
My only two beefs are, I wish it came with the adapter (takes six AA's) and about 10% - 20% of the Tones are a shot in the dark. But, for a budding musician she is making music and loving it.
Great for the price and I would say so far fantastic starter.

Taking into consideration what it is and what it's designed for, it's excellent. I'm a guitarist in a three piece band and I use two of these. Left hand set to bass and right hand for synth pad or other sounds. Plugged into a PA it sounds massive. Surprisingly, there are some usable sounds!

Comments about Casio SA-46 Mini Keyboard:

I use this small keyboard strictly for pitching. I sing in our church choir and I do not sight read. This keyboard is convenient and short enough for easy handling, problem is to be short it is missing some keys. For me,this is not a big deal since those keys are used for low low voices.

            • slick to the touch, plastic keys

            Best Uses

Comments about Casio SA-46 Mini Keyboard:

Works almost perfectly for my own purposes - needing a sketchpad to work with on my lap.
If the keys weren't so slippery, the smaller size wouldn't be such an issue. As it is, fingers easily slip off the intended keys a lot, especially when looking away from the keyboard.

The percussion patterns are acceptable to keep time to, but would be nice to have at least one setting that is just a simple click, maybe with a 1st beat accent. The sounds are perfectly acceptable also, but would be nice to be able to set your own default sounds for that handy piano/organ big button - that would stay in memory after switching off, too.

Overall, a really handy keyboard and a far cry from the original Casios.
