If Roland would've given this machine four tracks instead of just two, I'd be a proud owner. Hopefully the next incarnation will have more tracks.
I've owned the VS-100 for about a year now, and I haven't looked back yet. It's easy enough for the average person to use, and costs only $700. Positives: -It's a cheap package and can be used by anyone with no prior knowledge -It comes with Sonar VS software and can be used as an external device -Controls automation, pan, equalizer, compression, etc. -Record away from the computer, and then bring the tracks back to Sonar VS -Can be used with most recording software, best with the latest Sonar -Sonar VS can connect to Reason, Antares, and any other ReWire programs (I do this myself) -Customer service is wonderful, and will answer any questions you have Negatives: -It only supports two tracks at a time -If you move on into more serious recording, this will be too small to support your needs, and a larger mixing table with be necessary Overall, for beginners or users with some experience, this is the best choice, and comes with everything you need. You can also find a package on Musicians Friend with studio monitors, mics, cables and stands for a little bit extra. I suggest buying Mackie or Boehringer studio monitors, however, and Sony MDR-V6 studio headphones for flat frequency and the best playback possible. I also suggest buying Reason 4 for better MIDI sounds, as Sonar VS has limited amounts.
