Comments about Cakewalk Sonar X3 Producer Edition:
I have been using Sonar for years now and still love it. I just upgraded my software from Sonar 8 studio to Sonar X3 Producer and I love that every thing is located in one window. This make the work flow much smoother. Loving everything about it! Keep up the good work! Mike C. Producer Amber Rose Entertainment LLC.
Comments about Cakewalk Sonar X3 Producer Edition:
I love this software, I have been using Sonar since its release with X1. they haven't made many extremely noticable changes along this path but almost with out noticing they made it even easier to use. It was already easy..... I have used Pro Tools and Cubase and i will tell you that the only differance between any of them is how its used. you can acheive the same results from any of them. Sonar just made the way you work more comfortable. It's workflow reminds you of an old Analog board, so even old school engineers can figure out how to use it. it is extremely powerful as well boasting more input and output controls than anyone else in this price range. I am working from a PC and I will tell you that i have had very few crashes like other software users complain of. the guys at Cakewalk really out did themselves with this. Now that Melodyne comes with it it's even better because there is no need to buy it. that saves time and money having it built in. plus all the other goodies in it are great such as Rapture, Dimension Pro and Zeta+. Well worth the money for some one who uses it regularly.
Comments about Cakewalk Sonar X3 Producer Edition:
The most important quality to look for in a DAW is user support. With software this complicated, any number of things can go wrong or cause problems. Before I explain why Cakewalk is an evil money-grubbing user-exploiting company, here is a short list of some of the technical issues I've had in sonar:
1) Absolutely essential keyboard shortcuts not covered in the documentation and with no mouse equivalent in the user interface.
2) Cakewalk projects migrate from one version to the next without any apparent issues, and they even save and reopen with saved changes correct. However, if you back up your projects and have to restore at any point, the fact that you started projects in one version and continued them in the other causes your projects to be unrecoverable. Almost all of the work is lost (in my case it was about 200 hours of work). Cakewalk, despite knowing about these flaws, released the new version anyway and has no fix.
3) Automatic re-sampling of your audio which has to be undone
4) Automatic reassignment of your outputs
5) Playback issues
6) Many, many more.
Sonar has the worst customer service that I have ever encountered. While other audio companies support their software for upwards of ten years after its release with driver updates for new versions of windows, phone tech support, and fast online support, Sonar's performance is abysmal. They actually cease to support "old" versions of their software by phone as soon as a new version is released (which happens every year). Supposedly e-mail support continues, but this is a lie. E-mail responses can take months. Let me say that again. It took them months to respond to one of my e-mail tech support enquiries, not days, not weeks, but months. And the response that I got from e-mail tech support was not even correct.
If you do not upgrade, your old versions with outdated software will cease to work with newer OS versions... and upgrades are not cheap. Let's examine a few scenarios.
Here is one scenario:
You buy Sonar X3 today. This costs you $400. Suppose you do not upgrade to X4 when it comes out. Your X3 will eventually cease to work with newer OS versions. This means you probably have about two years to use your $400 piece of software, but you completely lose customer support after the first year. This means you are spending $200 per year on software with no technical support. Not a good investment.
You might say to yourself, "Yes, but then I'll upgrade to X5. It's more economical than buying every version, and it avoids upgrade problems." Wrong. Suppose you upgrade to X5, skipping the X4 upgrade. Your upgrade will cost you $200. Cakewalk charges you twice as much money to punish you for skipping a version. Financially speaking, you might as well have just upgraded to X4 for $100 and then upgraded to X5 for another $100.
Here is another scenario:
You buy Sonar X3 today. This costs you $400. Sonar X3 support is discontinued when they release X4. You pay $100 to upgrade to X4. Your new total is $500. You encounter an error when migrating your files from X3 to X4. Because X3 is no longer supported, you must use e-mail support. It takes 3 months for you to get a response. The response is that there is no fix and that you should create new projects in X4 because it is the latest, supported version.
You now have 9 months remaining until X5 is released and you get to pay another $100 and go through the same process.
Sonar is not in the business of helping musicians create music. Their business plan relies upon something called "sunk cost fallacy." The idea is that a musician, having already thrown a substantial sum of money at their poorly supported software, will be unwilling to walk away when they realize the software is poorly supported because they have already invested so much; they will chase the bad investment, throwing more and more money at it year after year, trying to cling to what limited and poor customer support there is. Five years in Sonar with customer support and you have spent $1000 with nothing to show for it but a pile of CDs with ancient unsupported software.
This is a scheme, and it is exploitation. Skeptical? Cakewalk actually removes old versions of Sonar from their technicians' computers in order to make it impossible for them to help with anything but the latest version. Bad user support isn't accidental: it is an intrinsic part of their strategy to force money out of the pockets of musicians.
Run away. Buy other software.
