Sonar X1 Producer - All you need and more in a very usable package.`

By Tom Williams III

from Kennesaw, GA

I got the upgrade, as I have nearly every time there is an upgrade to Sonar's Producer series. I didn't expect it to be too different but I was wrong. What X1 has done is to make everything so much more easily and quickly usable. Everything from midi to audio to soft synths and drums right there in front of you and ready to access. This is what Sonar needed to bring it up to Pro Tools or anything else. Sonar has for years been world class, in my opinion. It has had all of the parts in equal quality to anyone. In Midi it has always been ahead of the others. When Pro Audio came out another step occured. Then with the change to Sonar the audio had matched the midi in usability and quality. The quality of Dimension Pro is stellar. You can start with an already great sounding patch, and then make it your own in every way. The ability to modify any and all aspects of a sound is incredible. This is, to me, the hardest or at least the most versatile part of a DAW. If you can do this with a soft synth think of what the rest of it must be. The Pro Channel gives you on the audio the same thing Dimension Pro gives on the soft synth. Same thing with Session Drummer 3 on the drums. This, my friends, is one very real DAW. I own several, as I always have, including Cubase, Ableton, and Traktion. I was about to add Pro Tools latest to my computer when I did the upgrade called X1. I don't need it now, or anything else, except the latest of Sound Forge, which I always keep onboard to master anything from any other source.

I'm a converted believer

By Jason Mackay

So, this new version has gotten bogged down in a lot of talk. I'll admit, I was skeptical to try it. But I refuse to be a PT user and I've always had great results with Cakewalk's support staff. So I took the plunge... Don't listen to the forums. Try it for yourself. It's awesome. It is the DAW that I have always wanted. Also, for those still on the fence. I'm running it on a laptop PC that is far below the minimum requirements and I haven't had any problems at all. No crashes.

Not for beginners & Difficult or Expensive to find comprehensive training

By Cole

from San Francisco, CA

I am new to music recording, editing and mastering. Impressive potential with this program, but the X1 upgrade is so recent so I found there's few to no support or tutorial videos on this yet. I see a HUGE learning curve ahead of me :(. After further research, I've decided to try out Avid Pro Tools - Mbox Studio - Item # 106200512. It might be more expensive, but there's a reason - it's a great "all in one" starter kit and it looks like Pro Tools has a larger market share, and the software and other components scale nicely with them, so you might consider that as another option.

This seems like a kool upgrade and I like all the new features I've seen on the internet, but why only PC? Everyone knows that the majority of "Professional" musicians, engineers, producers, and anybody who does work in a studio has a MAC!!! So why go through all this trouble in trying to get more people to swithch to Sonar if its not MAC compatible? Same thing goes for FL Studio and all those other DAWS that are trying to stay in the game. If your going to do something, do it right the firdt time. A perfect example is "Presonus" with their DAW "Studio One" its both PC and MAC compatible, thumbs up!. Wake up Cakewalk!!

X1 Producer interface is a giant improvement over SONAR 8.5 Producer

By gregg morgan

from San Marcos, California

Cakewalk's product release paradigm is something like Microsoft's. Release the product, let the users find the bugs then fix them with patches. That's kind of a crummy approach for the user, but in the end the results are great. SONAR X1 was pretty rough when first released but now, after several "fixes" it is awesome. All the bugs I had ever seen in X1 are fixed and the system works great. Also, every time Cakewalk has made a "fix" they throw in a couple of nice extra features as a sort of "Thank you for your patience", I think. The new interface is a great improvement of Producer 8.5 and it actually takes some effort to get used to how much easier it is to use. I can't believe some of these other reviews I've read. Even with the early "buggier" versions I've never experienced any of the kinds of problems they're complaining about. My experience is that SONAR X1 Producer Expanded (the version I'm using) is a very powerful and complete DAW plus a suite of professional quality effects, mixing and mastering tools that are all you need to produce spectacular recordings. I won't say that X1 Producer is not for beginners, but if you're a beginner, expect a big learning curve...not because the system is difficult to learn or to use but because there's just so much there.

Impressive in the end.

By gregg morgan

I have SONAR X1 Producer Expanded. I started out a couple of years ago, cold turkey, with SONAR 8.5 Producer. There was quite a learning curve, but for somebody like me who had no recording or production experience that would have been there with any DAW. There was some work and occasional frustration with 8.5 but I got by that and was amazed at its power. Then Cakewalk released SONAR X1. The original release was buggier than a 5-year old sack of flour...but that was then, this is now. After several additional releases all the problems have been fixed and this DAW is an absolute pleasure to use. X1 is a giant step forward in interface design over what 8.5 was. It is actually EASY to set up tracks, add or remove synth plug-ins, record, punch record, loop, cut and name it. X1 Producer also comes with a really excellent suite of professional quality plug-ins. Certainly not everything you'll every want, but everything you need to mix and master very sophisticated projects...and then some. X1 has great versatility, flexibility and I'm very pleased to say its earlier reliability problems, some of which I complained bitterly to Cakewalk about, have all been addressed and fixed. I'll add here that Cakewalk's tech support, especially by phone, has been the best I've ever seen. I think SONAR X1 Producer Expanded would be a bargain at twice the price. Any thoughts of switching to something else have long since left me. I've become a devoted SONAR fan. Results are everything, and for me the results I've been able to achieve with SONAR in my home studio are truly astounding.

Not worth the Money

from Nashville, TN

With Sonar X1 you will encounter problems when adding effects, session drummer or any other instrument and even when applying EQ from the Pro Channel, they will freeze your project with the inability to reopening them thus losing most if not all of your work and it has happened in a few different projects. It does have nice features like the portable tool bar and the pro channel (when it decides to work). I wouldn't buy it having these problems.
