Overview

This is a really well-designed special deal. If there is any single microphone category in which it is likely that you will be buying two of them, it is in the category of overhead condensers. Designed for drum overheads, the CAD CM217 solves your cymbal capture at a fantastic price.

In order to get a clear picture of your drummer's cymbal blends, you need two overhead condensers. The CM217 is equipped with a high-pass filter to avoid rumble and an attenuator to accommodate drummers of varying heavy-handedness. Mic clips included.

The CM217 is additionally good for acoustic guitars, string instruments, cymbals, hi-hats, and more. A great way to record acoustic guitar is to use one CM217 aimed at the lower bout and another aimed toward the neck. You get a lovely mix of attack and body that is adjustable in the mix.

I'm still unsure why people haven't been talking about these mics. It may be the price that sets people off, but folks do not be alarmed. CAD has made something worthwhile for us to enjoy, and Guitar Center has hooked us up with a great deal. These mics are hot, and they are clear. I use them for drum overheards, acoustic guitars, and for area mics on choirs. They pick up anything in the area and everything comes out clearly. trust the review, these mics will get any job done.

This mic is not bad for the price. It's not as open as some other condensor mics due to a sharp roll-off above 10K. I would not use it on critical tracks due to the lack of high frequencies and detail. There are plenty of better mics you can get for tracking your main stuff that are still affordable. I plan to use it as an ambience mic but nothing beyond that.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

I bought these because I wanted a matched pair of overhead drum mikes and, considering the reviews and the two-fer price, I couldn't resist these. I have tried them on acoustic guitar and am impressed. I haven't yet used them on drums so I am reserving the fifth star. During testing while wearing headphones I thought I was having a noise problem but then realized that the mikes wear picking up the sound of the water heater through the walls of my studio booth. They're pretty hot. I am not a gear snob. I've been doing this so long I can make five monkeys on a street corner banging on pickle buckets sound good with a cassette deck. It's not the gear. It's the ears.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

These are inexpensive small diaphragm condenser mics that are adequate for only a limited number of uses. They're tinny and shrill sounding. I'm using them as audience mics and that may be the only use I can think of that these are good for. Maybe a choir.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

These were a Stupid Deal purchase. My duo partner and I were trying to assemble the smallest, lightest, yet best-sounding PA system we could for playing small venues. I decided to take a chance on these little guys. They ARE small, both fitting in a small camera case, including the clips. We clamp them onto our vocal mic stands to capture guitar, banjo and uke. The sound is more than adequate for our needs and it saves us from having to haul larger mics and two more mic stands. Several musicians and sound techs have commented on how good they sound, especially given their size and price point. In all, a great purchase. Note: They're not good for vocals and we did have to fabricate small foam windscreens for using them outdoors.

I use these as drum overheads for my percussionist and they sound great! With SM57's on the kick, snare, and toms and these as the overheasds the drums really sound full. Great for my purposes!

I was having trouble getting a clear, full frequency sound on my live drum tracks. When I added these two mics as overheads, I was psyched with the result. The great price on a Stupid Deal of the day made it even better.

Well i bought this because I work doing a lot of studio and Live sound work and I needed something I wouldn't mind getting beat up. they work pretty well and sound clean. the fact that the top end ist super present is kinda a good thing because in live and in recorded tracks sibilance is always your enemy. they do need a little boost in the mids sometimes but that is a easy fix with a eq after besides they they are good mics for the price. i even use them for my voiceover stuff for my youtube page now.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

I bought these as part of a Stupid Deal of the Day. When I unpacked them, my heart sunk and I thought, "Dang, these things are SO small. They probably won't sound very good – you got what you paid for," and was prepared to return them. Before doing that, I decided to do a shootout between the CM217s and my pair of Nady CM90s, which come at a similar price point, and which up to this point, I thought were pretty decent, compared to my AKG C1000S, which I've always disliked and considered rather overrated. I recorded identical stereo acoustic guitar parts into Pro Tools. I recorded them flat with no pad or low cut roll-off as the CM90s have no such switches. One mic was pointed just left of the bridge of the guitar (right-handed – sorry, lefties!), and the other pointed at the joint between the neck and the body of the guitar. With the CM217s, prepare to be STUNNED – BIG surprises really DO come in small packages! Wow. The CM217s had a nice, flattering, full-bodied sound, picking up the body resonance of the guitar with no overhyped high end to accompany it, like you might expect. It actually sounded pretty close to what I was hearing in the room! The CM90s, on the other hand, were hyped on the upper mids and high end, and you could actually hear a dissonant harmonic overtone clearly being added to the resonance of the guitar. The low end was also lacking on the body tone. Not flattering at all. The other thing I noticed on the CM90s is that the gain levels on the mics were not evenly matched. I had to really boost the input gain on my preamp for one of the mics to match the output levels of the other. This was not a problem on the CM217s – the levels were perfectly matched with the same settings on both channels on my ART Digital MPA II preamp. The only caveat on these mics is to be careful with mounting or removing the mics from the clips, as you could easily dent the screen – only handle them by the body (part of the the issue of them being so small). Otherwise, for the price, these mics come HIGHLY recommended – even better yet, if you can get them on a Stupid Deal of the Day! Anyone want to buy my CM90s??? :-)
